What's the odds

With all this recent news on the NFL, it's hard to ignore the fact that the Griz football team is busting out NFL'ers like a well-oiled factory pumps out Trojans--pardon the puns.

I'd be in heaven if we also start producing an NBA'er or two. What's the odds of that happening?

Completely different chances. Look at the number of football players on teams compared to the number of basketball teams. Positions/talent level/strength all that are huge factors. With that being said, I think AJ has a shot to be a developmental player for a while and squeek into the NBA. Derek, because of his unique skills and abilities for a big guy also has a chance at the end of his career. The young kids coming in appear to have the talent, but there is a lot that has to happen before NBA ever gets mentioned for them.

AJ will get some looks but has to improve his ballhandling a lot for the NBA. His scoring is NBA ready though. Selvig, if he fully recovers from foot problems, has a shot for his passing and versatility, but has a long way to go defensively and on the boards. Selvig though does have Bird like passing skills and instincts, needs work on leadership, and confidence (Selvig had more confidence, and even a swagger at season's end). Bird had out of this world confidence, and believed he was the best. Difference being Bird next to never forced anything, which came with time. Qvale needs to get a nasty take no prisoners attitude on the boards, improved defense, and more offensive game. Him being tall and strong works to his advantage, but I see him going overseas.

As for the young guys, Cherry is the only one we can evaluate at this point. He has NBA quicks, athleticism, and defense. He has the attitude and great penetrating ability. He needs to develop the shooting, especially from the line. Many defensive minded NBA point guards make it without much of a 3 point shot, because of defense and leadership.

Based on other players in the BSC, Cameron Jones and Damian Lillard are getting some NBA attention. I think Lillard is very close to being an NBA combo guard already. I think Cherry is not very far behind these guys, the difference being he is more of defender and less of a shooter, but can score. I feel Autry may fall into this company in the next few years too. Jamar needs to develop more guard skills. He does not have NBA 3/SF size, and my guess is develop more NBA like quicks for the guard position.

These are the guys I have seen enough or heard enough to give even a slight speculation on. Rest of them are too raw or unheard of.

I will add more on Cherry and Vaughn. At this stage in their careers, they remind me alot of Eric Strickland, which had a pretty long career as a role player. I played against Eric alot while stationed at Offutt AFB, NE. Eric lived in Bellevue, NE and his father was Air Force. Eric developed his game playing against many Air Force guys.

Like Cherry, he was quick and athletic, he would always shut down any player offensively. He scored on athleticism alone, but with time became a good ballhandler, scorer, and shooter. Always, no matter what always defended, hustled, and great attitude.

While watching Cherry play, it bothered me to no end who his game reminded me of. After reading this, it came to me, without doubt Eric Strickland. It would be great if any of our guards ended up as good as Strickland.

Of the player who will be on the 2010-2011 team I will go with Qvale. While AJ got almost all of the press leading up to the NCAA tourney it was Qvale who impressed folks during the NCAA tourney. He has one quality you can not teach - 6-11, and another quality that is very tough to teach big men great footwork. People very impressed with his ability to move in the paint. He moved better than anyone on the court that night. Tinkle has done a great job of developing Qvales natural abilities. When Qvale is feeling it he is one of the better big men in the west.

Qvale needs to get more consistent and play at that high level every night, but he always seems to play his best games against bigger more talented players. He could catch some eyes next year and find himself getting some looks.

Future trivia question:
Which two players from the 2009-2010 Griz basketball team went to the pros?

Taylor in baseball and Roper in the NFL

I like both Taylor and Roper, but for them both to go Pro  they've both got A LOT of work to do...that would be very cool though.

I don't think Roper has a chance. He's not even the Griz' starting QB!

I agree, that is why I was telling Evizzerate that they had a lot of work to do to go pro. And Taylor hasn't spent a lot of time on baseball either. Major darkhorses to go pro but if you could bet money on them to make it, with huge odds against it, and they made it you could retire nicely. :thumb:

Roper is a better runner than Selle, but Roper has been inconsistent in the airiel game (Selle much better passer). Taylor sounds like a good kid, and he probably has a better outside chance...?

I think Anthony Johnson, Brian Qvale, and Derrick Selvig will all play bball professionally...overseas.

I will eat my shoe if anyone on the Griz roster plays one second in a regular season NBA game. That talent is not here folks. Just sayin.

Nice article on AJ. Hard to not pull for this guy.

I'm old enough to remember when people said that about Krysko.

I'm by no means suggesting you should start chopping garlic, butter and onions to go with your sole, Loyal. But stranger things have happened.
