What Will Motivate App St This Season?

Empirical evidence will prove whether or not ASU made the right decision going FBS...Archive this thread then resurrect it 2 or 3 seasons from now after they've experienced a first year of transition against better competition. Flat Earthers unable to cite anything more than unverifiable guessing prefer to dismiss those who even think about a move simply because it supports their bias...as for the Mountaineers' future, only time will tell. :coffee:

I think App State Jr and Sr will play hard for pride. They will be the king pins in this transition. They will be the ones that closed one great chapter of App State Football to start another. They will want to go out on top no doubt about it. Same goes for GSU this season. Both these schools players will play hard to continue tradition! Don't forget we are not talking about the transition of two schools that have little to no following.
The Griz would be foolish to go into this game, thinking that AppSt players will not be motivated to win. After all, coaches and players are competitors, as anyone in sport is. Yes, they will play for pride, motivation in itself. But, they are also in this sport to win, because they are competitors, & the Griz better be, as well. 8-)

Won't be difficult to motivate App St. This year and next year are crucial years for them. This year to make a statement that they are ready for the move and next year to state that they belong. There is a lot that can happen to demotivate a team or players (eg: losing, off-field situations, firings, lack of leadership or bad relationship wi the team). ASU has a good staff and a culture of winning. They are going to come into town motivated and ready to play hard and prove they are among the best in the FCS this year.

Any loss of motivation will be made up by strong self disipline and I'm guessing the App. State program has no problem in that department...

They will come to play and win.
Better be 110% ready for them...

Probably view Montana as the big game of the year and be even more fired up then they would have been had they stayed FCS

Thought I just heard Bill Parcels say that motivation is overrated and a player needs to be a self starter.

No, that's not what you heard, because that's not what he said. Parcels is known as a great motivator. He's a great motivator because he believes its important to motivate people. Every coach works on motivating his/her team. Here's what he said:

"Often combative with players and media members, Parcells said his reputation as a great motivator was "very, very much overrated."

"I think it’s impossible, as a matter of fact, to motivate someone who’s not a self-starter in that regard," he said. "I viewed myself as a teacher. I grew up in a family that was confrontational, so I think I carried some of that with me."

Agree. Nothing would sting team more than losing to an el did, chatty or, heaven forbid, Western the last year in the Socon. I expect / hope App is motivated to make a statement that, regardless of FCS playoff results, they were the top team in FCS when they left....

I have no idea what will motivate Appy - other than pride. A premier program in FCS and your kids probably don't need a damn thing to motivate them - other than the teamates they have to look in the face everyday. I can only say two things about your post.
#1. Awesome moniker/screen name
#2. I would rather lose 5 games in a row to App State than one to cat turd University. When the Griz have lost to App. atleast I knew it was to a quality program that can get it done in big games or go down swinging hard if they lost. As a FCS fan I very much respect your program. Can't wait for the big game and I hope we kick your ass!

Seriously, if the players can not get motivated just to perform well and win games then they probably should not be playing college football.
I was thinking more of the effect of the transition. These kids signed up when App St was winning National Championships. Not Totino Pizza Bowls.
These kids signed up for small college football and were rewarded with a chance to play major college football.

Appy could be motivated like Boise St. in '95 when we embarrassed them 54-28. Or they could be motivated to not go out 1-3 against Montana. I suspect the latter.

Just as important is how Montana will be motivated. I'm not sure I ever saw a more motivated team than the '95 team against BSU, who was moving along and leaving Montana behind in small college. I suspect the Griz will be plenty motivated for Appy. Just has to be a great game.

Hard to believe we still see comments like those made by NLGriz regarding the right move of App St. moving up to better competition in the real Division 1 of college football.

So, after 2 games of data, how motivated does App St seem to be this year? My impression is not very motivated.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes them to realize their backup QB is probably the better of the two and provides a more dynamic option than the hyphen.
