upgrades to weight room, locker room, enhanced study building??? has ground been broken for these improvements for the griz football...i think it would be a nice recruiting tool to have in the bag....i thought they were scheduled for fall beginning.....

My understanding is that the academic center is teed up, but awaiting various approvals in the university system/state. It would be new construction. Cost of something like $1.7 million. Construction would not begin until at least next spring. The funding is supposedly committed, and all or a bunch would be from donors. I still wonder if the all of the commitments will be honored on this, but the university believes the funding is in place.

The weight room and locker rooms would come after that. Yet another plan for the weight room is now being considered. I have doubts that the weight room will be done in the near future. I have felt that the academic center is standing in the way of the weight room, including donations for it, for some time, but the academic center is apparently important to Engstrom.

The academic center isn't important for recruiting; a new weight room is.

Then they shouldn't use football generated income on other things until football needs are met. We are the only school that "rents" the stadium to its team that I know of. Crazy.

Especially since the athletic department has paid for basically everything since the original construction.

If you think schools like USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Alabama et. al do not divert football and TV money into non-athletic uses, you are totally naive. MSU runs a deficit in its athletics programs, so they must get additional money to support athletics. UM is the only Big Sky school which enjoys a surplus in its athletic program.

Oh, so since we have great facilities for our football players, equal to USC, etc..., then I understand why we are diverting revenue now. Thanks for the info mensa. :thumb:

I was surprised to see that although Athletics rents the facilities, the maintenance costs also fall on the department, which is trimming $150K from its maintenance budget to help out with a $5.7 million shortfall tied to a 700 student enrollment decline.

You are probably right Bear Pause in that other schools do divert funds generated by the football teams/athletic departments to support other programs. But I would bet very few of them do so to the detriment of their respective athletics department's. I would also bet that the athletics department's are allowed to determine what their needs are first and then send what surplus they have to the school's general fund, rather than have the school's administration tell the athletics department what their budget will be and that the administration is going to reappropriate everything else.

Also a question to putter. Where in the world do get Grizzly football tickets for $25.00? Mine average closer to $40.00!

While I agree that Athletics supports a lot at this University, I think a lot of people on this board think they understand university budgets a lot better than they do. Athletics "rents" their buildings just like every other auxiliary on campus. Residence Life is another example. They get no money from the general fund whatsoever, support themselves entirely on rents for housing students, have issued bonds and carry the payments on all halls, (Pantzer, Lewis and Clark Village, etc.) and they also pay the same "rent" to the University. The rent covers a lot of basic services, more for athletics than residence life actually, but that is another conversation. Things like paying for the UM police which all of campus shares and is responsible for security in off hours and seasons, HR functions for athletics, general maintenance, snow removal, and so on. There are a lot of benefits that athletics gets from the University infrastructure that they would otherwise have to provide on their own if they operated as a complete separate entity, as some of you seem to believe. It isn't that simple.

And secondly, the academic center is for ATHLETES. It is to continue to help student athletes do well in classes and meet NCAA standards...it isn't for general UM students, and in fact will have very little impact (if any) for the general student population.

Carry on..

thanks player rep for your reply, as now i have a better understanding of where we are regarding the the status of these improvements...thanks again...

You can bet that the redundant HC and AD salaries are covered within the AD in spite of it being the president's action. It would be interesting to benchmark how many universities direct 100% of their game concessions to the food service and how many direct 100% of their revenue from logo and gear sales to the bookstore. My guess is not many.

Well, get used to more of the "redistribution of wealth". Seems to be in vogue now. Over half of you believe that way.
