What am I missing with Ah Yat?

This is a coaching staff who is notorious - for 22+ years now - to NEVER want to put the ball in a freshman / RS freshman's hands unless they see them as a freak of nature with talent. Furthermore they've always felt this way about the QB. Only twice, when forced only by injury, did they trust an RS Frosh to be QB. Justin Hartman for one game against Idaho, and Cole Bergquist in 2005 when Jason Washington got hurt. That was is. Usually, when even faced with the probability of having an RS Soph QB, they'd make sure to bring in a transfer to compete and (usually) win the job. That has been their MO forever.

Until last year & this year. Then suddenly they give Ah Yat some games and some meaningful reps. They proceed forward to give him the chance to actually win the job and start the season with him in at QB1. Even after Fife played lights out for a few games, they went back to the rotation in hopes have Ah Yat rise up and take the job.

That tells me that either this staff, who is generally a little stubborn in their ways, had suddenly decided to adapt to the way they do things with young QBs, or they see something in Ah Yat that they've never seen in other young QBs.

Ah Yat is a very good athlete too, he can be a very well rounded QB if he can improve on vision / reads and probably work on his outward leadership of others as well.

We've seen some great throws from him and some good running too.

I think he's the future, Fife is the right now.
Spot on. Maybe just maybe they realize they have a really talented kid, and if they don't give him playing time he's most likely to transfer. If they can develop him they win. If they lose him, well, that's not a good look for recruiting more qb's. The portal has really screwed things up.

Yes on

Stupid is posting again. Maybe next year or in the playoffs I’ll invite you to the box so you can experience the other part of life. Was funny listening to people talk about the dipshit you are.
This last part was cruel. He’s going to be tossing and turning all night thinking about the fictitious characters you’ve made up smothered in cold au jus talking about him. It’s a hellscape, I tell ya.

YES! I was hoping you would keep this ridiculous lie going.
Please, pray tell, explain more. Who were you talking to? The other members on egriz you claim are “here” but won’t acknowledge or support you? Or do you claim to know me IRL?
What did you really serve to eat as you obviously did not go through with the au jus prevarication as confirmed at the Mo Club?
And, yes, please DM me the invite and info for the meet up at your box during the playoff game. I will 100% take you up on that.

Didn’t the rules around red shirting relax, and allow for the youngins to play without burning eligible years?

Also, when it comes to K. Ah Yat, I usually need to buy some vowels.

The box is a sterile place, fans are out with elements and our team.

A couple things:

1. More of a question for people who have coached. Is it common for QBs who have had two years in a program to "develop" an ability to make faster reads, instincts, and better decisions in, say, nine months? Or are they kind of "who they are going to be" by that point"?

2. If the answer to #1 is that it is common for a QB with two years in a program to transform (via 1980s movie training montage or otherwise) within nine months, and assuming he does so, are we kind of lucky that he didn't develop earlier given the portal and all?

Caoched a little young guy FB, but played and been around some pretty impressive coaches...hahaha

Truth is, a 17 or 18 year old brain is still developing. Being in a "system" breeds familiarity of the system, but not necessarily the game. As a kid matures, it may be sophomore, junior, and yes even senior year before the "game" is understood and as they say "slows down" for them. A real life comparison would be driving. Think about driving when you were a teenager, and how much "better" you were in your 20's (most people haha). It slows down, you see more, brain processes multiple scenarios quicker. KAY is a RSF. He has skills that we all can see, but he is still young "developing" the process. Fife is older...has seen more...and you can see it when he plays. Looks more confident and I'll say, settled in there. That's my take.

Thanks. I definitely understand that young brains aren't fully developed. I think he really has a very long way to go. To use your driving analogy, if someone is still trying to navigate a roundabout and merging onto a crowded freeway after two years of driving school, IDK if it's very common for that person to be racetrack ready in nine-ish months.

I've mentioned this before, but do you think the hopes would be as high if his name was Dan Smith from Winnemucca, NV? I question whether they would be. 🤷‍♂️

Bergquist beat out Washington.
Looks like Washington started 4 games before injuring his shoulder and being replaced by Berquist. I am just going off of the news articles I looked up, and the Stat sheets for each game. Washington was then Kicked off the team the next spring.

From ESPN Article....
Jason Washington, a Bowling Green
transfer who started four games as quarterback at the University of
Montana before injuring his shoulder, has been kicked off the team.

Washington was also abysmal for long stretches of those first 4 games.
