Weber State

We made the right move, if late, giving Money the keys to the program. Like with Bannon the last couple years, he is head and shoulders above his teammates in flexing a defense and creating opportunity. He is our only possible mismatch, and thus only chance at competing with this offensive system.

Tonight just illustrated how visibly drastic the talent drop off has been outside of Bannon and Money the last few years. This is where we are as a program: If Money sits, we lose by 30 even if Jones is 4-14.

For this team to be a contender, you have to believe the following:

1. Despite 4 years of average to below average play pre-Bannan, Moody is a #1 or #1A on a BSC championship team.

2. Moody and Money (despite being a freshman) make up a 1A and 1B on a championship BSC team

Everyone else can be pieces, but aren’t moving the needle unless 1 and/or # 2 are true.

It started off like a typical WSU/UM game. Both teams were playing hard nosed defense. Nobody was getting good looks at the basket. I thought the good D continued the whole game long, by both teams. The difference was when Weber started hitting some shots and UM started presuring themselves a little bit. I was surprised to not see Williams suited up and his absense did hurt UM's chances a bit. However, I don't think it made a 30 point difference.

Part of the difference in this one was the depth Weber has at a couple of positions. It was evident throughout the game.

When we got the big lead, all I could think of was Anthony Johnson and what a great player he was. Way too sad that he left us all the way that he did.

UM will be back to fight another day.

Chalk this one up to “not ready for prime time”. Obviously a very disappointing showing for the Griz tonight. Like the NAU game in football. Hopefully Travis and crew can figure things out and quickly. Weber showed tonight why they are the team to beat this year.
I’ve been critical of Travis the last couple of years for his style of play, recruiting and player development. While player development remains to be seen I like how he has this team playing at a faster pace. Bringing in some height and getting Money Williams to commit will prove to address the recruiting process. I had high hopes for Nap but so far that hasn’t materialized. I feel Oke is yet to reach his potential but I do feel his upside is still there.
Speaking of Money Williams does anyone know what’s wrong? I believe he twisted an ankle in SJS or CD.

Anyone else who watched feel like the game completely turned when Jones Power blocked our layup and then hit a three right after? I just remember thinking, we're f@cked.

Money is "out indefinitely with a foot injury" according to the SID on Go Griz.com. Since he didn't make the trip, I wonder if he even returned to Missoula after Christmas break?

The main thing they need to improve on is shooting, which they seem to be cursed. They need to light some sage, go to therapy, have a beer before the game, really just try anything at this point.

Weber shot the ball very well and we did not. I think this is a talented team that is still top 3 in the conference. Money being out affects everyone’s productivity and his defense and size make a difference as well. Lots of basketball to play. Go Griz!

I agree Here are the rounded shooting stats
FG%: WSU -- 58%... Montana 38%
3pt FG%: WSU -- 75% (9/12)... Montana -- 15% (2/20).

So, did Weber's perimeter defense affect Montana's shooting? I re-watched the first half and don't think so. In fact, most of Montana's shots were open looks.

Here's another comparative stat:
Dillon Jones: FG-- 4/14, 3pt -- 1/2, FT-- 6/7. Tot: 15 pts
Aanen Moody: FG-- 4/13, 3pt -- 1/8, FT -- 2/2. Tot: 11 pts

When Moody goes straight up, he is very accurate. Most of his misses were coming off screens too quickly and shooting as his momentum was carrying him sideways. Looked to me like he was trying to do too much and was not able to set into any sort of rhythm. It all seemed to snowball as the game went on. All of their pressure wasn't able to cut the lead and frustration set in. It can happen to anybody. I'd much rather be on the good side of that dynamic, but sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you.

I'm not looking forward to our trip up to Montana. I've said this before, but wins on the road will be hard to come by this year, no matter where you go. :thumb:
