Accurate points Evertt. I think UM and Wayne were a good fit, and now he is pursuing bigger challenges. Like you, I am happy for Wayne and family. I wish them well. I do not fully understand the people who criticize coaches who leave UM and are stepping up to challenges. Wayne gave UM his best effort for eight years and the Griz players benefitted from his leadership.

Looking at his incoming class of '12. He'll be sanding & taping another 2 yrs.

His A$$ will be canned well before he can pop the lid to that can.

He got the number 1 player in Utah this year in Loveridge, .... very good young players to start his base from plus Washburn, who showed great improvement as the season wore on will be around for his Senior season.

They will be fine, and beating Weber in less than 3 years.

Loveridge is a tweener, & will really struggle in the Pac. I've seen him play, & Utah was his "highest" conference offer for a good reason. They got bounced early in the state tourney, & he played lousy.
Loveridge is not there answer, he plays the 4, but in a 3 body. He's been able to pull it off in high school, but won't in DI, let alone Pac12. Weber's 2 young Centers made Washburn look like a high school player. Larry will get canned well before he can right the laughing stalk which is Utah basketball.

If you don't think Tinkle didn't want out of Montana because he felt like he was treated 2nd fiddle to the football program you're kidding yourselves. Tinkle was VERY active in trying to leave because he didn't feel like he was getting ANY respect. Wayne Tinkle said 1 day before the conference tourney started, "my boy will be playing for dad And it won't be at Montana." Don't miss this point, Weber has done anything & everything to retain Randy Rahe, & UM had just the opposite approach with Tinks. It's not good for the conference that he's gone. WSUnpurple really misconstrued the quote (I wish I could find it) and is slightly off. A few months back the subject of Tres's recruitment came up. I do not remember the exact word so am not quoting anything. Wayne responded to his girls having gone out of state, but that was different being he is not a women's college coach. It is harder for him as a father and coach to have the same mindset with his son. He wants to coach Tres in college. It would be hard for him to have anyone else coaching his son in college. He implied the competition for Tres is tough and offers coming from all over the country, but he would love to coach Tres.

Wayne did not say anything even hinting Tres would not be at Montana. He implied the competition was stiff, and he would compete as hard for Tres to play for him as he could. The article was posted on one of the EGRIZ threads. Maybe someone can find it. :thumb:

Good luck to Tinkle. Wanted to coach against the highest level of competition but he will always have a place in his heart for the UM...to much history in the family. He said in the press conference he will have to recruit another type of athlete at OSU than he did at Montana. He knows the challenges but I think he is excited, not just for the paycheck, but for the challenge of being in the Pac-12 and the type of teams he will play every year. I took the comment as a dig but it was the truth, basketball does take a backseat in Missoula. Happens at a lot of schools. Maybe he thought, as a former player - with his wife a former player, he could elevate the excitement in Missoula to the early '90's. Did not happen but he did get basketball back on the right track.

I am not apt to disagree. I had always heard such rumors second and third hand that the admin was indifferent towards the basketball programs. Since I am not around Missoula much anymore, I didn't really know what to believe.

The recruiting budgets, the media outlay, all of those things seem to indicate that basketball was a second fiddle. I don't believe the department or community gave as much to the program as Wayne did. There are few that probably would dispute that.

I would be frustrated to, and while just about everyone would try to put on a great public face, it is frustrating to know that when push comes to shove the basketball program is a second class citizen at the University and in teh community.

Wayne is by all accords one of the best ambassadors the University could have ever had and one of the best human beings in the sport. Too bad that the community and school didn't embrace them the way the do the football program.

Your position is that Wayne Tinkle, one of the greatest players in Montana history, and a guy who spent years as an assistant at Montana during some of the best years the FB team ever had prior to spending 7 years a the head coach didn't know that Montana was a football school?

Sorry. He knew that before he took the gig. Was he frustrated by it at times? NO doubt. Did he want out of Montana? NO way. The only reason he left was for professional advancement.
