I've never changed what my personal priorities are for each season and I've been there pretty much through the start of what I consider the modern era of Griz football, which is 1991-to present day.

My list is
1. Win the Big Sky which means a playoff berth so to me they're one in the same with getting home playoff games at the top of that list.
2. Beat the Cats
3. Go as deep as possible in the playoffs and hope for a national title.

I have NEVER considered it realistic that the Griz would or should contend for a national championship every year. And I don't believe that means I settle for less. I HOPE for a national title contending team with the dawn of every season, but it never took me long to figure out which of those Griz teams could and couldn't contend each season. I've been surprised along the way (The 2008 team) and let down too (The 98 team and the 2000 team) I thought were teams that had a great shot. So I guess, winning the Big Sky and getting more great playoff memories in Wash-Griz is what it's mostly about. If a national title year comes along, then it's a major cherry on top! But as a fan, it's not the be all end all for me. I love the process, An ENTIRE SEASON, as much as I love the end results.

completely agree with this post. but you're gonna get blasted here for this...

I don't think havgrizfan gets blasted. It's the right approach IMO. It's "realistic". The "bi-polar" nature of many in Griz nation is "self-defeating" and tiring. When the Griz beat a "scrub" team it's "redemption tour" and "bring on NDSU". When the Griz lose it's " our defense sucks" and the "o-line is over rated". It is the same "broken record formula". At least havgrizfan stays even keeled. I mean c'mon, do you know how many Griz players go from being "NFL" prospects to " e-Griz fodder" on this board on a weekly basis? A lot. Frankly, I find havgrizfan's approach very refreshing.

A great post. As for the Quarterbacks, they are both great in their own ways, and lack in their own ways. I will ask one question of all you. Would you rather have a National Championship or an individual award like the Walter Payton Award? Look at Brock Jensen, everyone on Bisonville will say he is a pro quarterback, my opinion is he doesn't have a chance, but he wins championships. He doesn't do anything special, but does a lot of things right. His biggest play, the QB draw. I think JJ is a lot the same, nothing outstanding, but a lot of things good. UM and MSU know what is like not to have their respective leaders. Again they are both excellent TEAM players.

Back to Brock Jensen, the Bison don't have a clue what it takes to have a NFL quarterback. They never got to watch DD play, and he didn't end up in the NFL as a star (third string) but was a huge star in the CFL.

I would take both JJ or DM in a hear beat, but would love to have a team with EIU's Quarterback, he is a machine.

The 2007 team I had pretty high hopes for. They ran the table in the regular season and then it all ended on Carpenter's foot. I still swear from where I was sitting in the NEZ that kick was good against Wofford. A lot of NFL guys on that 2007 team, Kroy, Carpenter, Lex, Colt, Mariani, Shan. I can't recall how much those last two played but I believe 2007 was the "He's Back" season for Lex after the Achilles injury in 2006. The Griz were the #1 seed and then to get bounced by Wofford in the first round at home stung big time. 2008 made up for it in a lot of ways because expectations weren't quite as through the rough.

I don't expect JJ to win the award I was just wondering what everyone thought about his inclusion or exclusion. Adams and DM are both great QB's and I think of the 3 Adams is most likely to win the Walter Payton Award before his career is done. EWU seems to manufacture Payton award winning QB's over there.

Personally, I'd rather the Griz collect wins, conference championships and FCS championships more than individual awards but when they have guys that are exceptional it is fun to see them be recognized or at least considered.

I still think Huntsberger should have won the Buchanon award.

If I had my pick of Big Sky quarterbacks I'd take Jordan Johnson #1, Vernon Adams #2, and Denarius McGhee #3. They are all three outstanding but Johnson is a proven winner when it matters most and yes I am biased being a Griz fan. I have also followed his career more than the others so what I seen from him is enough to convince me he is the one I want leading the Griz.

Adams has been putting up the numbers this season along with when he was in last year and I would honestly be surprised if he (1) does not play for at least one national championship and (2) does not finish in the top three for at least one Payton Award. While McGhee has been consistent and great during his career he has yet to do anything impressive when it matters most, the playoffs. The MVP's and conference championships are nice but I bet he would easily trade them all just to play in one national championship game, let alone win it.

Maybe if you guys kept games closer JJ would have to throw more in the 2nd half and his stats would be more impressive....

Im betting our game with you guys will be close, and we'll have to rely on his arm a bit more. How is your run D?

Abysmal. I forsee another 300+ yards on the ground against them.

Just speculating here. I wonder if his highly publicized trial has anything to do with him getting the shaft from voters. He is without a doubt talented enought to be on that list, and if were talking about a players value to his team he is wouthout a doubt our MVP. We live and die with JJ, unfortunately. Look at our last season without him.......didn't turn out so great. A lot of that was due to us not having a capable backup for the system we were running, which basicly required a fantastic running and throwing QB. Still, without JJ this year I think we would end up in the 7-5 range. :twocents:

Sorry if this has already been stated in this thread but I don't want to read through all the meaningless "my d*ck is bigger then yours" BS. JJ is is on a seperate list of players that are under consideration to be placed on the watch list so it's not like he's going unnoticed. He just don't have the yards to be truly considered yet. He should be there by the end of the year though with his efficiency and td to int ratio. On a side note I'd trade a NC for a Payton award any day.

When I was thinking about this yesterday and began this thread your theory crossed my mind. I think there possibly could be some merit to that theory, although I hope not. It actually surprised me that this thread reached 40 some posts before it was mentioned.

JJ has intangible qualities. He is a proven leader, reads defenses well and can get the offense in the right play, and is a team player. He is a playmaker requiring defenses to pay close attention to him. He does everything necessary a quarterback needs to do to win football games. Adams can be very electric and is very good when his team needs a play at any time. DM has racked up pretty impressive stats but has a difficult time finishing the job. Anyone would be fooling themselves if they wouldn't take any of them. I'm very thankful JJ is back next year.....I'm sure he will be considered for the award. Until then he will continue to help Montana win football games.

DM has small hands and can't play in the cold ;) kidding

Can't fault TSN for the players they added; Nebrich will be in the final conversation with Adams and Garrapalo. But they definitely need to remove some people...

Speaking of JJ and Denarius.....

A bud, and huge Bobcat fan, of mine asked me if I would trade JJ for DM. I tried to keep my Griz bias out of it and answered him honestly "no".

He proceeded to tell me I'm brainwashed and an idiot. He also said every single FCS coach would take DM over JJ. I admitted to him that both DM and JJ are incredible players and are extremely valuable to their teams. I then challenged him a bit and said here are just a couple reasons why:

- in their only head to head meeting, JJ beat DM
- JJ has led his team to the FCS semi-finals, a feat DM has not yet completed
- JJs stats and ability to win games is on the same level as DMs and better if you take into account my previous points

He continued to be berate me and tell me I'm a brain washed jack ass. In my opinion, there is no way a Bobcat fan can make their choice without bias and same with a Griz fan. 99.9 percent of Cat fans will choose DM on principle while 99.9 percent of Griz fans will take JJ. I really was trying to take bias out of it and go with my reasons above which I think are legit.

What say you? Am I a brain washed idiot? If you're a Griz fan I'm guessing "no I'm not". If you're a Cat fan I'm guessing "yes I am".

This reminds a bit of a sports talk show I heard on the radio before the NFL season began. Can't remember who it was that made the statement, but in general the question was if you could have Payton or Eli, which qb would you want on your team. The guest stated it was easily Eli, and then talked up the great numbers that Payton has had. However the numbers that he most liked were the fact that Eli plays better in big games, and gets the job done when needed whereas Payton has typically bad games in the post season. The host couldnt believe that he wouldn't take Payton, but the guest insisted Eli was the one he wanted for his team.

Wonder if he would answer the same way today????

You need to do a better job of selecting "Buds."

ILTC, I've also seen about 1,000 posts on BN making fun of Griz fans for being proud of so many Big Sky titles, when a lot of them were shared. It's funny when the shoe is on the other foot. MSU fans are VERY PROUD of the last three years, and rightfully so. Yet, none of the Cat posters I see, here, or on BN, EVER bring up that those titles were shared with other teams.

My' friends and I still laugh when the Cats were #1 and JJ and Co, thumped them in "**Asterisk Stadium**" and they still claimed "co-champs" We had the same record, but their loss was against us!

So that's different then the Co-Champs you shared with us after you lost in 2002, 2003, & 2005! How long have you been a Griz fan? Since 2011?
