MBBALL Vs. NCU

Money is soo frustrating........
Maybe I bought into the early hype.
Maybe I just wanted to see another Griz have a chance at the NBA.
Young man has been through soo much tragedy I respect the hell out of him, I just have a hard time watching him turn the ball over every game.

EWU v UNC will be the championship game with the Bears getting to the Dance … two of the hottest teams in mid major hoops going into March. Feels like both Griz men and for sure the women would like this season to end.

I think part of the reason he is turning the ball over so much this year is because of the team around him. Yes, we do have good players but I don't think every player on our roster is cut out for D1 basketball. It always helps to have a strong supporting cast. I saw a post today from a former hockey goaltender. He was talking about how he played on the varsity team and let up 5 goals, but the next day he played on the JV team and posted a shutout. He attributed this to the fact that the JV players were motivated and played hard defense. If our team played better together and put in more effort, both offensively and defensively, Money would probably turn the ball over less. The key to stopping the Griz is to shut Money down which is easy to do if you don't need to worry about anyone other than maybe Tejon Sawyer or Brooklyn Hicks. Bringing in this amount of transfers worked last year, but this year they don't seem to work as well together and that is negatively impacting the team and is showing in game. Hopefully the team can work to trust each other and build a little bit of chemistry in this next week and get revenge on UNC in Boise.

I don't remember the coach that told me this first, but TOs are a direct reflection of overall talent. Money is a very good player and will likely be able to make some $ somewhere. However, at this point he is likely not a NBA draft pick. He came out of HS with such high expectations, but life has not been kind to him. Maybe he will stick around and have a great senior year. I will gladly eat a little crow. He might just want to start his paid career a little sooner and see what he can get out of the portal, who knows.

Agreed. I think if these guys had played more together they might be on the same page. Often money is making a great pass expecting a guy to cut, but that guy just doesn't cut.

I made this point elsewhere,

1. Money has been doing exactly what the staff asked him to do this year. He's that type of player. There is a reason that he's added roughly 40 to 50 assists this year from last years total. At one point he was going to eclipse the regular season high for assists since Travis has been here. His turnovers up about 40 from a year ago are reflective of two things; a) doing exactly what the staff wants and b) doing too much. Money has, almost to a fault played within the system and it explains why he can disappear as a primary offensive asset for 30 minutes. You can see the staff trying to cajole him to be more assertive in positions, to get his when the opposition gives him the lane to do so. Just from my perspective, there isn't a selfish bone in his body. If Travis said, go score 40 tonight, I think he could. That might be what is necessary for the Griz to win the conference tournament.

2. The supporting cast isn't great. Injuries haven't helped (we really miss Anderson-had he been healthy at any point there is a chance he's a starter) but offensively this team isn't detail oriented enough to make the read/triangle style offense they designed around Money to work effectively. Last years group moved into those spaces, read the floor and their teammates. A lot of those money turnovers are at times passing to places he thinks guys should be. They never found the right rotation or pairings. Kepley was one part Kai Johnson and Isaak was the other. Really believe that Travis kept running those two out hoping that they could approximate. I like Hicks but he's a bull in the china shop offensively. Mix that with classically freshmen type behaviors from Aguino and Thompson, and you can see the scenario as to why the supporting cast couldn't possible hold up.

3. The most shocking element is how detail deficient the team is in general. Just doesn't have the ability to lock in, and you can see on the defensive end. Never seen a TDC team lose focus as much as it does defensively. Slow to respond, don't anticipate picks, and very prone to spectating. Thought for sure when the team went on the road and beat PSU in what was a pretty complete game that would have been the burst it needed to get them to see how good they could be on the defensive end. Then they go out and give up a bajillion points against Sac State. The second half of the UNC game was a similar effort.

I will say this: Any of the top 5 or 6 teams can win this conference tournament because I could come up with a laundry list of limitations that each team has and all of them fatal at times.

24 - Montana isn't one of the 5 or 6 who can win the tourney.
Sure they can. If the Montana team that beat UNLV and nearly knocked off A&M and swept PSU shows up to Boise, then they absolutely can win this tournament. But if the Montana team that lost to Tech and got swept by Eastern and the cats shows up to Boise, then they're gonna bow out to UNC in the first game. This team at times this year has played up to their potential, but more often than not they haven't. The question is can they lock in for three days and rinse the bad taste out of their mouth from the regular season? Who knows with this team. I wouldn't write the Griz off cause the entire league has been Jekyl and Hyde all year, but I certainly wouldn't consider the Griz to be the favorites going into it.

In theory you are right. They have looked like a team that just doesn't want to be out there the last month or so. Which is pretty shocking for a TDC squad. I was seriously thinking about a tourney journey in January. Now........

This is insane really:
1. Portland State 13-5 (Losses against Montana (2), MSU (1), EWU (1), and UNC (1)
2. Montana State 12-6 (Losses against PSU (1), WSU (1), ISU (1), Idaho (1), EWU (1) and SS (1)
3. Eastern Washington 11-7 (Losses against Idaho (2), MSU (1), WSU (1), PSU (1), NAU (1), UNC (1)
4. Montana 10-8 (Losses against MSU (2), EWU (2), UNC (1), ISU (1), WSU (1), SS (1)
5. Northern Colorado 10-8 (Losses against UM (1), MSU (2), WSU (1), PSU (1), SS (1), EWU (1), NAU (1)
6. Weber State 10-8 (Losses against PSU (2), Idaho (1), UM (1), MSU (1), SS (1), UNC (1), EWU (1),

This is absolutely the definition of a 'mid' conference when you just look at the record against the top 6.

Records against the top 6:
PSU: 5-5
MSU: 6-4
EWU: 6-4
UM: 4-6
UNC: 4-6
WSU: 4-6

There are more things to like about Portland State than I dislike. Not in love with their temperament and inability to win on the road. But they have depth to their scoring, play decent defense and can lean on guys. MSU and EWU are probably built to win the tournament just based upon how they play, and Montana, NC and WSU all have guys that if they get going on a heater are capable of winning three games in a row.

To me its an absolute crap shoot with no team in the conference that wins the BSC tournament probably gets off the 16 line minus maybe Portland State. Just a mid conference full of a lot of mid teams.

As sad as the Big Sky is, there are 8-10 conferences that are even weaker ... we've looked in on some of their games, and there's very little prime talent. Not none, there are a few bright spots here and there. Kind of a mixed blessing, really. If the BSC rep got a play-in games against one of those really weak opponents, they could probably win a Big Dance game. Most likely, as usual, the conference rep will likely get fed to a ranked Power-5 opponent.

Lol! That's a prom date foul. Just keep your hands to yourself. Old guys got a ton of sayings
Loving how we are attacking the rim and not settling for threes, keep that up

This broadcast team is bad bad and I can't stand the tourney being in boise no chance fir fans..., conference had to change this
