You somehow think Kautzman is a "surprise"?
Kautzman has been the best FIELD GOAL Kicker (not on weenie extra points, or as a punter) in the whole state the past 3 seasons. Look it up!
Kautzman exploded on the AA scene as a Sophomore, earning 1st Team All-State, and was named KICKER of the Year.
And he has only improved since all that recognition, and is simply automatic on FIELD GOALS.
In fact last night he set a school record easily nailing a 51 yard Field GOAL.
"He can thank Coach Grey from some confusion,” Butte High coach Arie Grey said. “We jumped offsides and it went from a 46- to a 51-yard kick, and he just nailed it.”
Kautzman a surprise? Not in this universe.
Way to take what was said out of context. “Surprise” as he hasn’t been offered by the cats or griz yet, or another D1 program.
Kautzman is truly special and great. When he charts though he hasn’t been on the mark all the time. That isn’t a negative though. Others have been more accurate. For instance, when he charted in Billings last December he was well behind Capser for accuracy. I saw this during the special teams camp in Wa-Griz stadium this summer.
Also, as a high school coach for the last 11 years and take a particular interest in special teams, kicking deep matters only roughly 33% of the time. While 33% is accuracy and the rest is proper form and approach to the ball. Being able kick deep is not what most coaches want. Bobby Hauck likes his kickoff guys to drop it between the 2 yard line and 2 yards inside the end zone. Where and who he wants it kicked to is more important than deep kicks
High school kickoffs are from the 40. Kicking it 5 yards out of the end zone is 75 yards. Rorhback is in great company as Buschini, Capser and Gilman all do that now. If Rohrbach wants to compete he better be kicking it 5 yards outside the end zone anyway.
We work hard to manage expectations with our kickers and punters. We work closely with Schillinger and Green to know what years the Griz are bringing on a kicker and which ones they want a punter, or neither. We position our recruits around that and build their recruiting schedule around that. We do that with the Cats too.
As I said, I was at the specialist camp this summer as I brought 2 young k/p’s over. I never saw Rohrbach kick a 65 yard field goal. No one was close to that. I have only seen Capser and Kautzman do it and it was off a stick. Capser on Twitter on August 12th of last year and Kautzman this last summer sometime. The only time I have ever seen it by snap and hold was in Daylis Stadium when Bozeman High’s, Travis Dorsch, kicked a 63 yarder for the state record and one of the 10 longest field goal kicks in US history.
Lastly, all of Kautzman’s accolades were in AA football. Capser had all of those in class A football. It’s clear you know the Kautzman’s, but try not to discredit others before you have the facts.
