Vim's 2018 Montana High School Football Recruiting List

Richard Cranium said:
Vim when are they going to announce the Mondak team? What would your choice be by position for the team?

They usually announce that team in March. I have a pretty good idea who's going to be on it in certain positions but the roster is built by the selected coach of the Montana squad so it varies year to year.

If I had to build the team 2018 Badlands Bowl roster, here is who I would pick (I think they only allow 34 players per roster):

QB

Kaleb Winterburn (Helena High) - 6'1", 195 lbs.
Levi Janacaro (Missoula Big Sky) - 6'1", 220 lbs. (Run the rock! Winterburn can be the throwing QB)

RB

Drew Turner (Kalispell Glacier) - 6'0", 210 lbs.
Lane Sumner (Huntley Project) - 5'8", 186 lbs. (Sumner can play in the slot if need be)
Ben Voss (Billings Central) - 5'10", 175 lbs.

WR

Gabe Sulser (Billings Senior) - 5'9", 165 lbs.
Logan Kleinhans (Bozeman) - 6'2", 195 lbs.
Nick Germer (Missoula Sentinel) - 6'2", 175 lbs.
Mark Estes (Kalispell Glacier) - 5'10", 180 lbs.

TE

Max Morris (Kalispell Glacier) - 6'4", 245 lbs.

Center

Conor Quick (Helena Capital) - 6'2", 265 lbs.
Zach Fussell (Hamilton) - 6'3", 265 lbs.

Guard

Carson Shuman (Helena Capital) - 6'3", 250 lbs.
Trey Copeland (Huntley Project) - 6'2", 270 lbs.
Dawson Hoerauf (Whitehall) - 6'2", 265 lbs.

Tackle

Joe McElroy (Missoula Loyola) - 6'5", 250 lbs.
Trevor Welnel (Helena Capital) - 6'3", 250 lbs.

Defensive Line (Tackle and/or End)

Karson Wheat (Deer Lodge) - 6'2", 275 lbs.
Caeden Suero (Helena High) - 6'0", 235 lbs.
Brandon Aimsback (Browning) - 6'4", 260 lbs. (could also go play offensive tackle)
Justin Jenks (Helena Capital) - 6'2", 230 lbs.
Logan Kolodejchuk (Columbia Falls) - 6'2", 238 lbs.
Tanner Harrell (Shepherd) - 6'1", 240 lbs. (could also go play guard)
Jory Choate (Bozeman) - 6'1", 200 lbs. (can also play linebacker)

Linebackers

Nolan Askelson (Billings Senior) - 6'2", 210 lbs.
Blake Allred (Billings Senior) - 6'0", 200 lbs.
Seth Schneider (Helena Capital) - 5'10", 215 lbs.
Brandon Morley (Missoula Sentinel) - 6'0", 195 lbs.

Cornerbacks

Ben LaBeau (Billings Senior) - 6'1", 170 lbs.
Ty Chouinard (Hamilton) - 5'11", 165 lbs.
Brock Peterson (Livingston) - 5'10", 180 lbs.

Safety

Garrett Graves (Eureka) - 6'3", 190 lbs. (can roll down to OLB)
David Koppang (Missoula Loyola) - 6'0", 195 lbs.
Jackson Pepe (Kalispell Glacier) - 6'1", 200 lbs. (can also roll down to OLB)

Vim, any idea on the ND roster? I'd also like your thoughts on why Montana owns this series. The few wins ND has are by average less than 7 points but Montana's many wins are by over 24 points. I'd like to hear your thoughts. P.S. The Badlands Bowl and the Brawl of the Wild are very similar in record and small margin win vs blow out wins.

Montana owns this series because their best players actually play in the game. That and the fact Montana always has more speed/athleticism. North Dakota never seems to change it up for this game. They are usually bigger up front but Montana seems to always have the edge on talent.

As for the Cat/Griz comparison, I see a coincidence and nothing else.

I fully expect Blake Allred to be a PWO for the Grizzlies when the dust settles in a few weeks. Depending on how January goes, they may offer him a partial. If he does commit to the Griz, you get a potential starter as a junior and a special teams ace for all four years.

Skyline sports reporting that Coach Sacks talked with LB Hill from Anaconda after his b-ball game tonight. Go get him coach!

Would love to see Allred as a Griz! Its amazing how many collegiate level football players Senior has produced recently.

Any update on Welnel from Helena? In your opinion, is he an FCS level lineman?

In my opinion, it could go either way. He has the frame to put weight on, and that’s good for FCS. He would need a couple years to really develop into a productive FCS o-lineman. He would probably have a bigger impact at NAIA, but I personally could see him getting a starting role late in his career in the FCS.
As for any update on his recruiting status, I haven’t heard much besides a couple visits to Frontier schools like Carroll, Tech, and Western. I could see the Griz giving him a PWO and letting him earn money through the years.

I hope Vim is right. Allred would be a steal. Talked to an NAIA recruiter that said "In 2016 season Blake Allred had more Defensive points than both 2016 DPOY Keaton Anderson and 2017 DPOY Nolan Askelson."
Watching his film, with his speed and instinct, I'm really surprised to still see him on the unsigned list.

Allred and Hill are perfect PWO type players. Seems like you can usually get some starting caliber linebackers from Montana going that route

I’m guessing walk-on or PWO. Hadn’t seen him announce an offer but that doesn’t mean much. Either way, good get for Hauck.

I have a feeling that PWO and small partials on Montana kids will be prioritized more with Hauck than Stitt did so I expect us to get quite a few solid kids as a result. Hauck had a lot success giving kids a chance that maybe weren’t big sky caliber yet but developed into it. Look for Allred and Hill to be next in line after Welnel.

100% agree. And personally, I think that is the way to go. Give the hard working MT kids a chance, it seems to pay off 90% of the time, maybe even more.
