Looks like he is staying put.

For what it's worth I received an email from a friend who talked to a former player. There was a player that went down with heat exhaustion and the player went back to his dorm room and called his parents. His parents then called the AD and VD, Mike then basically said "the hell with it I am done, I am retiring." Carroll is trying to work it out between the parents and VD and that is why the press conference for tomorrow has been cancelled.

Take it for what its worth, but I sure hope he reconsiders and stays with Carroll.

I am about 99.9% sure this was not what caused MVD to consider stepping away from Carroll. It is more of a personal issue and I will leave it at that. Also, Parker was on vacation and had no intention of returning until later this week. Obviously he had to return to Helena after talking with various individuals on Sunday. Mike is/will be the head coach for Carroll this year. This thread is over and now eveyone can go back to discussing all the issues related to the Griz... hopefully football related.

KULR8 News says VD is staying on. I sure hope he has a good reason for considering retirement such as family or health issues. Otherwise, he lost a lot of credibility for his actions.

WOW, you are harsh. I am sure with all he has done for Carroll, this will hardly put a dent in him. We all have rough days, and the older you get the more tempting it is to move on to something new. :thumb:

Glad to hear he is staying though.

Considering the outpouring of emotion from CC alumns, fans, boosters and former players towards MVD's possible retirement, i'd be willing to make a bet the LAST thing he's lost is any credibility! The man is going through some things, just like every human being does at one or more points in life! Whether it's players or coaches, it never ceases to amaze me how so many egrizzers are so obsessed with this ish they can't understand that football isn't the be all end all and that the people who play and coach it are HUMAN and have every right to act as such, NO MATTER how much they make, how big their scholarship is or how much taxes YOU PAY

Being honest shouldn't diminish one's credibility should it? Personally I respect MVD for telling people what he truly feels. Too bad more people don't step up and own things in their lives.

I don't see it as an issue with being honest as much as an issue with just making some huge decision like retiring, and doing so at a time that would be devistating to the program, without being 100% sure of your decision. Just seems like a really wishy washy thing to do, and has made me look at him in a new light. Seems like the type of thing that could have a small impact on recruiting later.

My point was not to be harsh or critical of MVD. I recognize all the positive things he has done for Carroll College, their football program, their student athletes, and football in Montana as a whole. What caught me off guard was he appeared to be retiring during the fall camp with what looked to be no advance notice and in doing so left the college, the program, and more importantly the young athletes in a real bind. Now if he has a legitmate reason such as health, family or other personal issues then he should be given some slack and space.
If his considering retirement came as a knee jerk reaction then what kind of lesson does that teach his players and fellow coaches? I truly hope this is an over reaction to a rumor mill and there was nothing to report here. If he has off field personal problems my thoughts and prayers are with him as he works through them. Other than that good luck and best wishes to MVD, Carroll College, and their student athletes in the upcoming season and in the years to come.

I see your point, but in his defense, and he deserves the benefit of any doubt, when people make emotional decisions they are not always on top of their game, and that isn't always their fault. Is there a perfect time to make life decsions, not always imo.

Occasionally, Mike Van Diest would pause to collect his thoughts, trying to keep his voice from wavering as emotions took over. At times there were tears in his eyes, as he addressed a crowd of 128 people about the difficult decision that weighed on his mind the last few days.
From the IR:

Throughout the news conference that lasted a half hour Tuesday at the Carroll College P.E. Center, the Saints' longtime football coach showed a vulnerability not often seen on the sidelines.

He remains the school's head football coach for the foreseeable future, but vowed changes would need to be made from within. He said he has not always been able to recognize the man in the mirror at the end of the day the last couple of years.

"I have high expectations for the people around me, and I wasn't sure I was living up to the expectations I set myself," he said.

Van Diest, entering his 14th year with the program, admitted the timing of his near-resignation was a bit selfish, with the Saints' first game 10 days away. Although the outpouring of support he received from both the Carroll community and on a national scale was tremendous, and he was grateful for it, he said he never meant for this to be a self-promotion. He viewed it, rather, as a time of self-reflection.

By the time Monday evening rolled around, he knew the football field was where he belonged.

"It felt good, it felt right," he said of being back at practice Tuesday morning.

When asked the reason he changed his mind about stepping away, Van Diest said there was not one, but about 130 of them: the faces staring back at him every day he goes to work.

For a more detailed story from Tuesday's news conference, including more from Van Diest, see Wednesday's Independent Record.

Life is a challenge for most of us , unless you have the luxury of a yacht with special guests like the young man, GB1. :)

Wonder if "changes from within" will include eliminating the use of "juice" by players. Sounds like CC is worse than Rocky was in the early 90's.

I talked with the mom of the Carroll player. He was telling the O-Line that he could not breathe and motioning to the sidelines that he needed to come out. VD would not let him come off the field until the ref stopped the game to get him some help. The other coaches were pissed and chewed on VD because of how dangerous the situation was. This may or may not be the reason but it did happen and I am sure it must have been a factor.
