It's great Missoula and Montana kids can play at D-1 schools besides MSU and UM, but let's keep it in perspective. Oregon State is NOT a better team than Montana, and barely better than MSU. Sure they have prestige because they are in the Pac-10, but they have been pretty pathetic for a long time. Montana has been to the Big Dance 2 straight years. When is the last time OSU was in? I checked....1990! 17 years since they've had a sniff. Just because they get killed by quality Pac-10 teams, does not make them a good team.
Jack has only starting (4 games out of 20) because of injuries on a lousy team. Where does anyone think he'd be playing for the Griz? He wouldn't be playing ahead of Dlouhy. Chavez is the same player (actually I think much better than McGillis) and he can barely get any PT. Austin Swift was MUCH more highly touted and he almost never plays.
OSU is 1-7 in conference, with their only win over doormat 0-9 ASU. OSU went 5-13 in conference last year. 6-20 the past 2 years. He's on a terrible team. How is this a guy we let "slip away"?
OSU only beat Northern Colorado by 2! They have no wins over a team with a winning record*. Wins are over NCU (2-17) Montana State (5-13) , Howard (7-12), Cal-Poly (7-9) Portland (5-15), Western Oregon (NAIA?), Mercer (8-10), Bethune-Cookman (2-13) and ASU (5-14). That is a combined 41-113. And they've lost games by 28,44, and 45. Their Sagarin is 172. Montana's is 183. OSU's is only that high because they've lost to more quality teams, not by merit. Their most impressive win is over ASU, who is #207, which is artifically inflated as well, based on their losing to good teams. OSU's non-conference schedule makes ours look strong. They went out and scheduled absolute doormats (besides LSU). Bethune-Cookman is ranked 333 out of 336 teams. Howard and Northern Colorado are also 300+.
Jack and the Beavers played in front of home crowds of 2189, 2877 and 1221 in 3 straight games this year. They had home "crowds" of 434 and 482 last year. Yeah OSU is big-time. They are "Pac-10" in name only.
The fact that Oregon State is taking MSU and UM's rejects should be alarming to Beaver boosters, not alarming to us for letting him "get away". He's a borderline D-1 that would not play at any decent D-1 school. They are a continual doormat because they are recruiting the Jack McGillis'. The Griz are winning conference titles and getting into the NCAAs because we are recruiting players much better than Jack McGillis.
Maybe he could help MSU, but I don't think he'd play at all for the Griz. His dad played Football for MSU, so they probably thought they could get him to walk-on.
Also if you go suck it up against Butte High School when you're being scouted by D-1 coaches, you deserve to be skipped over. Let's face it: Montana high-school BB is brutal. One of the worst 3 or 4 states in the country. If you're 6'6" and a legit D-1 player, you should never have a bad game. You should dominate.
How Idaho didn't offer Dlouhy a schollie is a more legit question? Idaho is awful and they let a kid from their backyard go play and start for a 2+ time NCAA-tourney team. Idaho is 3-16 with 2 wins over South Dakota State and only 2 kids from the state of Idaho. pathetic! If you're gonna suck, at least give local kids schollies.
*All records are team's records vs. D-1 teams.
