UM VS. ISU

Final in Portland

PSU 96 MSU 71

Huse loses by 25 in the conference tournament to the 4th place team and you think he deserves coach of the year?

I'm glad we got Tinkle and the Cats got Huse.

It only took PSU 13 minutes to score 38 points in the 2nd half, after scoring 36 in the first.

Wow, talk about a melt down. Huse had the Cats claw their way back in, just to have a let down after the break. Too bad.

For what Huse has done with this team, he deserves BSC coach of the year, in my opinion.

Although I'm sure the new Weber guy will get it.

There is no way Huse deserves it more than Rahe. It's not even close. Rahe took over a Weber team coming off a last place finish and added just about as many new players as MSU; only he went 11-5 which is much better than the 8-8 Huse managed.

Earlier i posted about how upbeat the announcer was even though the cats were down by over 20. im gatherin from the post game interview that this is his last game to call and that he is done with bobcat athletics. if i were in that position, i guess id be pretty upbeat to. just thought id follow up on my previous post.

Great heart tonight GRIZ! What a fitting close for Mike Chavez last home game? Mayes again was every damn where on the boards and defensively. Also showed much class to ISU. I wish Mayes were back for 1 more year. I love his game for the intangibles and atheticism. Ellis a great overall game, the last 8 minutes of regulation Tinks decided to put Ellis on Ahad and Mayes on Schroeder, what a great call. Schroeder shutout rest of the way and Ahad scored only 3. Wow, just noticed something amazing on this post, all names mentioned so far are Seniors!!! Sr leadership existed big time in for the GRIZ tonight.

I agree with Mayes regarding ISU, Kudos to ISU for 2 phenomenal games. I will say ISU has the best interior "team" defense in the conference. It is amazing how tough they make it to get the ball inside. If ISU holds onto this coach I see a bright future ahead for them. Also to add, AHAD is amazing, 5 of the shots he hit were with a player in his face, not bad defense. Then we finally left him wide open on a deflected ball, and wham he hits it wide open too. Please tell me he is a SR.

Even though it does not show up on the stats, to Staudacher for surprising on the ball man defense when Mayes and Ellis and were used to deny Schroeder and Ahad the ball. I seen Staudacher matching up with the ballhandler. I admit I was very worried. I had never seen him have to play pressure defense that often on the ball at the top. I now admit, his defense is much better than I ever thought it would be. That was encouraging too.

I agree with you on the crowd the 1st half. Instead of leaving, next time ALPHA we need a few fans to help get the others rowdy!!!!! Speaking of fans, :thumb: :thumb: to the students painting themselves up!! Those 4 guys need to be put in charge of the student section next year. Students need to come loud, proud, wild, and ready to raise some hell!!! For that matter, every GRIZ fan should. At one point we had a top 10 national fan reputation at Dalhberg. I would love to see that again!

Finally, great W tonight for the GRIZ! I will be praying for Hasquet getting healthy. We need him. Now GRIZ go take care of business in Ogden. Then go get your best dancing shoes, we will be heading to the BIG DANCE!!!!

Griz flat.

Don't look good.

Crowd sucks ass.

I'm out of here.

Loser. Man it would be great if we could get rid of you permanently.

Hell of a game you missed.
In the post-game interview, Mayes credited the crowd with helping the Griz, especially down the stretch. It was super loud at the end and probably as loud as I witnessed all year. I guess once the crowd members who sucked ass left, the rest of of us improved. This Griz team has come back from big deficits all year (although not always with a resulting victory). Leaving early is not wise. :twocents:

BTW, Thanks to the older griz fan sitting 5 to 6 rows behind me. I was standing, waving, cheering, getting rowdy, etc. A few lame fans told me to sit down. I said "stand up, this team needs us more than I need to sit down." The old man said "damn, that boy is right, lets hear it!" That took care of that, rest of the way there was nobody bitching, most everyone standing and getting loud.

Really, is that the best you can do? Smack the Bobcat play-by-play guy? Weak :loser: Kris Atteberry did an admirable job taking over after a legend named Dean Alexander retired. He was excitable, he was loyal, but most of all, he was fair. He called games the right way and gave credit where credit was due, be it the Bobcats, or even (God forbid) the Grizzlies. Show a little class to a guy who is taking his experience he earned in the Big Sky Conference all the way to the Show - he's going to become part of the Minnesota Twins radio broadcast team.

This game was a bit different than others.

Griz played well in the first half with good defense. If it weren't for poor rebounding, Griz could very well been up around double digits at half instead of just 1 point. At least, this is the best I have seen the Griz play defense in the first half this year. Except for a small 5 minute stretch (14:17 to 9:56 left) where ISU went on a 13 - 0 run to get a 13 point lead, Griz played well on defense. And then, the overtime was just awesome.

It looks like the Griz could be peaking at the right time. Hopefully, Griz can carry this momentum into the NAU game and win. I do not think NAU has as good a defense as ISU has. It will be a matter of holding down NAU's 3 pt shooters and containing Bazy, plus execute on offense. Griz can do that. I see more confidence in the players, now. Certainly didn't panic after the ISU 13 - 0 run mid-second half.

I think this team plays better when the chips are down. Call them the comeback kids. Last Two games though, they have executed in the clutch when they had to. Something they didn't do against NAU and PSU near the end. Having won in the clutch two games in a row, really has to help the confidence. That win in Pocatello against ISU was huge in making it possible for Griz to comeback and actually win it here in Missoula.

Plus, I have to vote Coach of the Year to the Weber State coach, Rahe. Taking a team from last to first in one year happens so few times.

i dont consider that smackin the bobcat play-by-play. i think the smack was aimed more towards msu. congrats on him gettin an upgrade in jobs. so, easy fella. im sure its a tough night for you and your buds. i felt, like others on here stated when the griz were down big, that their season was done tonight as well and i would be pretty sour right now too had the griz not dug down deep and rallied again.

  to tonight's officiating crew. They let the boys play for the most part. Also, finally a referee that would blow the whistle for palming and traveling. That was by far the best officiated game I have seen the last 3 years. The big tall black official has to officiate in the bigger conferences. That guy sold every call, let the coaches speak, and knew what to say and how to say it. He had total control of the game. Finally a game when the players decided the game not the officiating. Yes Ellis did palm the ball, and yes every travel was a travel. They called it both ways too.

I've listened to Kris many times-- including several times I was at the game in person. He is a decent announcer, but too many Bobcat fans are under the delusion that Kris is completely unbiased and always 100% accurate in what he says. He's a homer just like many other team's announcers. An unbiased person watching the game while listening to Kris realizes that, but way too many Bobcat fans don't.

Attebury is every bit the homer that Mick Holien and Scott Gurnsey are blasted for being...

Dean Alexander was the best announcer in the state simply because he could paint you a mental picture of the game that wasn't to be viewed blue and gold colored lenses...Maybe just a blue and gold background-

Posting a little late, but back from the game and oh man what a great way for our senior class to go out. The crowd was great, noisy most of the game, ISU only put them in a quiet spell for roughly 10:00 in the 2nd. Prob. about when Alpha crapped out and left, too bad man, you missed a very fun finish.

I think Tinks found a line that works very well and plays smothering defense. Ellis, Rundles, Mayes, Chavez and Strait were too much on D for ISU, they SHUT THEM DOWN, it was great.

- My player of the game - Mike Chavez, hard fought defense, killer 3 point shots, and relentless on the rebounds. Thanks Mike for some fun scenes at Dalhberg!

- Stu Mayes' athleticism is amazing, he also was amazing on rebounds and defense.

- Ellis was dialed in tonight, he managed the ball well, and did his best to disrupt the ISU ball handlers. He drained two key three pointers and was solid with those late free throws.

- Dlouhy had a very pretty tip in, and played some good D and also got some key rebounds.

ISU has incredible interior defense, their ablility to keep Hasquet (even though he was sick) and Strait contained and their ability to grab boards on offense is what kept them in the game. Well, that their two three point shooters, wow Abdul made just about every 3 he shot.

The crowd pumped the Griz up and has to be credited for one turnover (partially). It was the key play that helped the Griz get back. ISU got called for a shot clock violation b/c the players couldn't hear their coaches/fans/bench players shouting that time was expiring. Of course the Griz D shut them down too, that was the main part, but the crowd helped!! :thumb: :thumb:

Congrats Griz, thanks seniors for the fun night, and beat the crap out of NAU!!!

The crowd was great! They really got into it after Chavey hit his 3 pointer to get the Griz back within 10 -- crowd never never stopped after that. There was a lot of standing and cheering the last 3 minutes and in OT. It was loud.

Here's what the Pocatello newspaper said about the crowd:

Crowd a factor

Late in the game, with Montana surging back against Idaho State, the crowd at Dahlberg Arena became a legitimate distraction to the Bengals. That might sound a little odd considering Idaho State spent much of its preseason playing at Illinois, Marquette, BYU and Oregon. But on one possession John Ofoegbu held onto the ball without worry while the shot clock expired.

“When they made their run, the crowd definitely got back into it,” Schroeder said. “The atmosphere definitely changed, and it was hard to communicate.”

With all the close games the GRIZ played this year at home, I am sure crowd noise like that could have turned a few L's into W's. I am proud of GRIZ fans for making a difference last night in crunch time. It makes a difference for our team, they often feed off the crowd. Mayes also implied the crowd was great and a big part of the comeback. He also said it would have been great to have that kind of atmosphere the whole year. He is right.

I hope GRIZNATION can take this game and Stu's comments to heart for 07/08. I hope GRIZNATION can get behind this team more and support them again. It would be great to have Dahlberg regain the reputation as one of the most intimidating venues in all of college basketball. It can be done, we did it before in basketball. We have that reputation in football, regardless of 1A or 1AA (FCS) affiliation. I talk with a lot of out of state college football fans, when they find out I am from Missoula, without fail I hear "The Montana fans are unbelieveable!" "We have been to WA/GRIZ in Missoula, that place is to F'ing loud!" "What a great place to watch football." For the fans that have never been here, "We are making it a point to attend a GRIZ game one day. We have heard so many great things about the fans."

It really is amazing. For those that I talk to that are older than 40, I have heard many comments about the "old" days at Dahlberg. How it once had a reputation, to bad it has been lost. Followed up by the inevitable question "what happened?"

Come on GRIZNATION, basketball fan or not, community supporter, Montana supporter, looking for fun, etc "Support this basketball team!" Especially for conference games. Hold off on the bar scene, poker playing, tv watching (get a DVR or DVD recorder) until after 9 PM on any GRIZ gamenight. HELL if you like to cheer for a local kid, come watch Hasquets next 2 years. I have a feeling we have only began to see what he can do. If he keeps his attitude he is going to go down as a GRIZ great. Let GRIZNATION pride show for basketball beginning in 07/08.

Another interesting quote from that article:
Grizzlies’ guard Bryan Ellis knew nothing of Idaho State’s overtime failures this season, but he still said he was confident Montana would win throughout the game.

Down 13 points, his teammates said not to panic. As long as they put pressure on Idaho State and got the crowd involved, Montana would win.

“We knew we needed to get stops,” Ellis said. “We needed to get transition points instead of going against their zone. We’ve been digging back all year. I was never nervous. I knew we could come back.

I was worried but for some reason I just knew we wouldn't go out at home like this.
