little run .down by 6..wide open 3 ---hits the side of the backboard??? WTF maybe I have had way too high of expectations..can we beat Carroll? F***** Ugly!

Yep. That was the deciding moment in the game. Seriously, you don't get a better look at the DI level than that. And to hit the side of the backboard?? Wow.

I sure hate to see Will Cherry miss this much, have to come back and try so hard, and maybe rehurt himself this year to get a 15-16 seed and maybe never get a chance at the big league! This is a rebuilding year! Next year he can come back bigger and better, and be a senior with Keron and recruit jc big guys and everyone else that much better, and redshirt dunn and Bradshaw, and???????????????

First, you meant Kareem :). Second, Isn't Bradshaw going to have to take his redshirt this year due to the transfer?
Yep my mistake

Couple interesting stats. No Blocks by either team and the Griz apparently only had 10 turnovers. Who knew? Felt like more.

But then the next time down he hits a three. At least he bounced back. Still that was a killer. I think the back breaker was the Technical on the bench. We at least were in striking distance but then they sink two, get the ball and sink another shot. All of a sudden they are up double digits again where we could have possibly got a stop and turned it around. Wonder what Tinkle will say about the big T.

Good point on the T. That truly decided the game (although I still think KDS's miss was the moment the game was lost).

Weisner and Gregory played great, Jamar another double double, officiating was a non factor(finally) but damn this just sucks! We've always had inside guys??

I'll do my best:

Guys playing hard. Better effort than the other night. But we gotta get smarter. Number one problem is (couldn't hear).

We were battling back. Thought we could get a key stop, give up a layup. Next possession, we let a guy drive by us and we foul. We gotta learn how to defend without losing our hands.

Did a nice job utilizing Kareem in the first half. Couldn't hear the rest.

Guys appeared lost without KJ on the floor. USF got whatever they wanted off the dribble.

"How do we allow a guy like Dirkson get 18 on us?? No offense, but that's a joke".

Got some time before the next game to get home and really get after our guys.

Look what we got out there. We got a lot of ingrediants in the stew, but we need to develop consistency and we'll be fine. Just playing a lot of guys who don't communciate and don't know what toughness is.

Something tells me this is going to be a really rough upcoming week at practice...

Hard not to wonder where this team would be with the post player we lost before the season, or with Reader.

Anyone catch tinkles post game, I've been on the sfu feed all night! Their announcers were great, truly fair, accurate, & balanced! ! Coach Walters had nothing but good things to say about us! Stating that we were beat up missing starters never quit and that cherry is one of the best in the nation. They were very respectful of the griz program and tinks!

Agree on both posts, PG.

I got the sense from the, "we have a week to get after our guys" comment that there could be a few lines drills to develop some toughness comin up!

Im getting to the point of being a more critical poster now!! But colemans minutes are getting more frequent and I think he can be more of a contributer? ???

I think Coleman will come around and hopefully be a big time contributor soon. It's fairly typical for a JC player to not really wow people right away. Even AJ didn't start showing what he could do until the 11/30 game his first year here. Virgil Matthews didn't get a whole lot of time until the end of the year his first year here either, so I think Coleman will be fine....it might just take a little more time.

Remember back in the days when we all bitched about having guards that werent quick enough to drive or defend , and especially shoot from the outside??? Kinda crazy how times have changed??? If we could just have a little of both?? huh? lol!!!

yep! your right! its just tough watching these boys right now!

Look at the bright side they did increase their point total from the BYU game and narrowed the point spread in the loss. Also with the way the Griz are playing Tinks may not be leaving Missoula for bigger paydays anytime soon so we get to keep him longer without passing the hat. There are good lyrics in every sad song. They will be fine in the B Sky and probably win it and then get smoked in the first round of March madness assuming they win their tournament.

I am not surprised with the inconsistent play. The GRIZ are very young, missing a dynamic defender and leader in Will Cherry. Also we have to find scoring in the paint. Defensively, I am not too worried about the paint. I think we will be okay there with Hutchison and Martin. So what can be done?

Offensively, we are a mess right now.
(1) Penetrate, to no end with Gregory, Henderson, Jamar, and Deshields. That was very good the 1st 2 games, but not happening now.
(2)Get post points from Jamar and Coleman, using them in the post, similar to what we did last year.
(3) More clear outs for our penetrators.
(4) More pick and rolls with Ward, Coleman, and Weisner.
(5) Double high post sets
(6) Run more picks to free up Weisner, Gregory, and Jamar
(7) Pick up the transition offense
(8) Have a very short leash with Deshields. The kid can penetrate at will, yet is out of control with his shot selection. He needs to be more disciplined offensively.
(9) Use Ward more selectively based on defensive matchups.
(10) Keep using Kareem everywhere. The guy is complete offensive player.

Defensively
(1) More traps and pressure
(2) Unleash our guards defensively, with more aggressiveness. We have the depth to not worry about fouls.
(3) Got to have Martin out there shadowing the paint. He is not strong enough to keep the ball from the post. He is long enough to effect a lot of shots though, just like Selvig did the 2nd half of last season.

Personnel, this is a tough one with so little quality depth at the post.
(1) Commit 20 minutes per game to Martin. We need to build him up, and only experience can do it. He is our only hope for a big post presence. Barring a drastic improvement from Hutchison, which I hope happens.
(2) When Cherry returns, cut Deshields minutes more than Henderson's and Gregory's. Gregory is calm, consistent, solid defender, ball handler, and leader. I really like everything he brings to the table. Henderson is a difference maker defensively, and his offense is starting to become dependable too. Deshields, is so inconsistent, and nobody knows what to expect. The kid can play some defense though.
(3) Ask Weisner to look for his shot more, which I don't say about many players. I like what he has done with the limited shots and minutes he gets.
(4) Use Hutchison to bang, and not expect much offensively. I do think he can be a lot better rebounder and defender. I honestly feel the team will be much better served committing to Martin though.
(5) Get Coleman in the flow. He can put up much better number than he has. He has a lot of talent and very versatile. I don't know why he is not rebounding more. Him finding his game may be the easiest way for the GRIZ to find their stride.

I hope Tinkle has some video of Andrew Strait. Our posts need to watch how he scored before getting the ball. He was amazing in finding holes in every kind of defense, then had incredible post moves. Just ask Fazekas. Andrew Strait was unreal in the paint for his size.

I am disappointed in the outcome of this game. I cannot get to upset though. Kind of used to the GRIZ struggling in out of conference play, then finding their game come conference play. I also have faith in Wayne figuring out how to get maximum results from any team any year. I have faith this team will be just fine this year, when all is said and done.

I see two important areas that the Griz need to improve on:

1)The only way this team will be successful is if all 5 guys really buy in to playing tough hard-nosed defense all at the same time. It seams like there's always 1 or 2 guys with a letdown, giving up an easy bucket. A team's defense is only as good as it weakest link. If they can get everyone on the same page consistently they'll have a chance.

2)Offensively, this team won't win many games like this with only 10 assists. When the Griz go one on one....or one on five at times, it kills them...even when they score. It's just like a poor shooter who hits a lucky 3 pointer....it gives them the false sense of reality that they can hit that shot and they start jacking up a bunch of bad shots. I used to love it when a player from the other team hit a shot like that because I knew what was to come...and that it would play into our favor. The Griz need to look for more opportunities to set each other up for good shots instead of taking turns trying to get theirs. If it's done right everyone should share in the scoring and success. If this team gets at least 15-20 assists per game they can beat some good teams.
