I hate to say it, but this Griz team is disapointing.

OVER, The last thing I thought this team would need this year is offense. Once again, we struggled from the field. Things are not looking good with conference play coming soon. We also need work on the ball pressure. We need to figure how to make something happen for easier buckets. The coaches have their hands full between now and conference play starting. A very disappointing year thus far. Right now I really do not have much positive to speak of here. I am very disappointed, verging on pissed so far. It will take a few days to get over this one for me. Come on GRIZ, get your ACT together sooner than later.

Hasquet is the man. For Griz to have the best chance of winning, he has to play well. The games the Griz looked the worst is when he had the worst games. Today, 3 - 10 from the field, and 1 - 4 from freethrow. This game appears to be similar to Hasquet's first half against Portland. Both the first half of the Portland game and this game was bad for him and the Griz.
So, here is to Hasquet to always play at his best the rest of the way. Best chance for Griz to look good and have best chance of winning.

jordan is a talented player. However, I disagree withthe last arguement. TheGriz-1. need to play better defense. and 2. The Griz
have to be patient and run the offense. Scoring needs to come
primarily where we have the advantage-INSIDE.
The contrast between the two teams was apparent in this game.

Hello fellow Griz BB fans. I just got back to my hotel room from the game. Here are my two cents worth. I am sure City will have some thoughts too.
This was a game that was somewhat disappointing, but not without a bright spot or two.
Team- The Griz came out looking like a team that wondered how they would do knowing Hasquet wasn't 100%, (hell he wasn't 50%). The Griz let Bryant intimidate them to begin the game, they were a step slow on Defense, were not helping each other out, and dug themselves a hole. All things they cannot do on the road especially. They looked physically exhausted early, and didn't get their "second wind" until after halftime. They were not moving their feet on D, and were reaching/grabbing fouls as a result.
The problem I see is this team looks to Jordan and Andrew for the bulk of the scoring. With Jordan's injury, I think some of the other guys felt they had to make up for it, and took it upon themselves to try and make plays, instead of running the Offense and letting the flow of the game come to them. That took the Griz out of their gameplan more than once. When the Griz ran the offense, they often got them good looks. Tinks told them, and I think they will see it when they look at film tomorrow. A film/picture is worth a thousand words so to speak.
Hasquet- First of all, I hope no one thinks Jordan took the night off, because he really probably shouldn't have played, Try telling Jordan that. He played on heart and guts again. His ankles were killing him, and when you can't run, jump, or cut, there isn't much else you can do. He scores 8 points and grabs 7 rebounds in spite of it. I am giving Jordo a pass in this game.
Andrew Strait- I think he knows how the Pacific guys felt when they faced up and saw Qvale looking down at them. Bryant is a monster, and Santa Clara has more beef on their bench. Once Strait figured out how to attack the big guy he was able to get some pretty good looks. The problem was the ball didn't get into his hands enough. When you have a guy shooting over 55% you need to get him more shots, plain and simple. On Defense Strait looked tired. I know these guys played their hearts out against UOP, but they had a day in between games, and frankly, they should be in good enough condition to handle it. Easy for me to say, but the trip from Stockton to Santa Clara is nothing.
Qvale- He looked a little more like a freshman tonight, but understandably so. He probably was intimidated by Bryant who moved Qvale around with ease. Qvale needed some adversity before BSC play, and he got it. It will only make him better.
Stads- I thought he played a much better game overall. This was a much better game for him because he was able to get good looks.The sad thing is there could have been more for him had the inside-out game been used more often. If the Griz would have executed the gameplan I think we would have been talking about Stads getting 18-20 points. It was there.
Martin- I thought Matt played poorly and made some bad decisions. Matt wants to make something happen to help his team, but he has to have the patience and discipline to know when to take that shot. He has the ability, but he needs to play within himself.
Sharp- Kyle works his ass off every minute he is on the floor. He had 7 boards, but was ineffective in the paint offensively because of Bryant's size. Every team needs a Kyle Sharp. He doesn't care if he starts, he just wants to help the team. If everyone on the team was this unselfish they would be better overnight.
Rundles- Despite the 4 turnovers, Cam was much better tonight. He had a little fire in his belly tonight, that was missing at UOP except for the last part of the game and the OT. Hopefully this is a sign he is snapping out of his mini slump. Look for Cam to get back to form very soon, like this Thursday.
CE Taylor- I thought he played a much better game than at UOP. He played better Defense, had no turnovers, but we don't get any offense from him. I am sure he will improve, but he needs to score enough to keep the D honest.
Spurgetis- I know he only got 5 minutes or so, and bless his heart for effort, but he got beat like he was a statue. I am not trying to be mean, but he just isn't a D1 player.
Graves- He only got in a couple minutes, but he did OK (played good D and knew where he was supposed to be on the floor). I think he needs more minutes. Why not give him some PT in the OOC and see what he can do? He looks pretty athletic, and seems to have a good attitude on the bench. I don't like to see guys who aren't playing pouting, and he doesn't.
Vandy- I haven't seen enough of him to form an opinion.
I know there are some people that thought the Griz would be 8-3 or better right now. Frankly, they should have at least 2 more wins under their belt, but they don't. I honestly would rather be 5-6, and playing a tough OOC schedule than beating up on Frontier Conference teams or the likes of Haskell Indian nation that NAU played tonight. I saw one poster mention Mike Montgomery was the halftime guest. Keep in mind, despite all those 20 win seasons Monty had at UM, he NEVER won the BSC. In my opinion it was partly due to playing the Simon Frasers, etc in the OOC Schedule. For what its worth, I talked to Monty and he thinks Tinks will do just fine if given the chance. Don't give up on this Griz team.
UOP and Santa Clara are very good teams, although I think the Griz could have beaten UOP and should beat Santa Clara. Lets hope the Griz regroup and close out the West Coast trip with a nice payback win at CSU Fullerton. :twocents:

I agree those are nice teams. But in my opinion, they're teams that a top BSC team should beat. I also agree the nonconference schedule will help. But honestly: Are the UP's, the Santa Clara's, and the CSFs really much better than most of the teams we'll face in the BSC? I just don't see a great deal to be positive about at this point.

UOP has had one hell of a record over the years that Thomason has been the HC. He was Big West Coach of the Year in 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2005-06, as well as two earlier seasons, so they have had it going on. In 2005-06, the Tigers advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year. In 2004-05, the Tigers set school records with 27 wins and an 18-0 Big West Conference mark in addition to a school-record 22 straight wins. In 2004-05, the Tigers also won an NCAA Tournament First Round game for the second straight year. In 2003-04, the Tigers were 25-8, winning an NCAA Tournament First Round game, with an upset victory over Providence in the first round. So losing to UOP at their place isn't a bad beat, even though the Griz played well enough to win. I was disappointed they lost that game, but loved the way the Griz competed, from opening tip through OT. If Jordan was healthy I think that would have neen enough to win. In a game like that one, it doesn't take much.
Santa Clara is 7-3, with one of the losses to UOP. They beat Utah at Utah by 15, which is a tough place to play. They lost a close one at Utah State and Stew Morrill. They are not as good as UOP, but they would compete for the BSC title. I do think the Griz should beat them though, but they didn't get it done. Not making excuses, but not having Jordo 100% didn't help.
CSF, I think the Griz will get that one if Jordo is back to at least 75% by gametime. Other guys need to step up, and the Griz need to bring the same effort as they did at UOP for 40 minutes. :twocents:

I also think Rundles has to get back to the level he was at last season. Basketball is a funny game, all Cam needs is one solid game to restore his confidence and swagger. The team can be pretty decent on D when all five guys are focused on it. The Griz are not as athletic as some of the teams they have played, and cannot get away with less than a 100 percent effort. Tonight was a combination of lack of focus to sart the game, Jordan's injury, and matchup problems. Santa Clara exploited that and outscored the Griz big time in the paint. The Griz lack of patience on O hurt them early, they dug a hole they couldn't get out of.
Watson's loss has hurt, but he isn't coming back so it is time to move on and quit using that as a crutch. I think this road trip is just what the DR ordered, despite the losses. Wins are great, don't get me wrong, but if they learn from these games it will pay off. :twocents:

I was fortunate enough to go to both of these games, and can see the talent and what the team is capable of, if they learn from their mistakes. I just happen to be a cup is half full guy, life is more fun that way.
