UM/NAU Game Thread

The women are Grizzlies too and deserve some support. They are doing the best they can and are using a bunch of young players. They may have had their tournament scheduled before the men's schedule was made, I don't know. But they are busting their butts and love the game. If you want to gripe, gripe about the folks that gave women the vote. That's when the trend started. Every school has teams that aren't the flagship programs, but the Lady Griz carried the BBall torch through some years where the men didn't have it. If Tinkles team comes within 400 wins of Selvig's record, he will have had a fine coaching career.

Since both programs have to rent out the gym, I would certainly say with near 100% certainty that Selvig scheduled the tournament first. This is the time when the Lady Griz host their tournament.
If you want to blame anyone, I would lay some on Tinkle/O'day, but a whole lot on the big Sky conference and the bracketbuster game. This would never have happened if they didn't expand the conference the last time with Northern Colorado plus the bracket buster game.

Since the game today had attendance of 4,000 plus, I would not be surprised if O'day/tinkle thought it successful enough to schedule more games in the afternoon. I mean, there aren't too many games that the Griz get over 4,000.

It would have been a bigger crowd at night. For one, I would have been there, and at the weeeber game, too. Sucks.

Just over 4000; the exact number is back a page or so.

Seeing as you were there, was it a legit 4000? Or was it less but with more ticket sales?
It was at least one less. As a season ticket holder, I was counted but because of the 1:00 start, could not attend! :x

Thanks for everyone posting updates here. For those that had to work, reading your posts after work certainly gave this fan an idea how the game went. I am elated we won a game in which our opposition played well. It is not typical a team shoots that good against the GRIZ, and the GRIZ win.

I have to admit, I am equally disappointed, upset, and some what depressed this is the 1st game in years I have missed watching in person, listened to, or watched online. I honestly feel cheated as a fan, even worse I have to go through the same BS again this year.

I pray this year is the only and last time we have lame ass scheduling like this.

Good job GRIZ!!!

Agreed. The very thing people don't want may happen more often.
If they do count me out next year!

It certainly would have been. Maybe 5,000.

it seemed pretty legit - seemed as many as the OSU game, very surprising. I think there must have been some group promotions going, lots of kids, and I saw the YMCA daycare bus parked outside (might have filled the student section?). GA was 2/3 full, most of reserved except the tops and northwest section.

Good hold by the Griz. A game of swings for sure. NAU has some good talent, and Montana did not play as well as they can, and let NAU back in. The lead was a little too big for NAU too overcome, but with a few more minutes they would have had the Griz. Will be a great game down in Flagstaff or wherever they play it this year, hopefully it will be televised by NAU network on FoxSports (or whatever they call that regional network now).

NAU's athletics website lists the following info for the Griz-Jacks game in Flagstaff in February.

Feb. 5 Montana * NAUTV/FCS/Delay 2/5 @ 8 PM on FSAZ; Delay TBA on FS Northwest 6:35 PM

Don't know what channel NAUTV is but I'm pretty sure it's through one of the satellite providers. Dish Network....I don't know? Tape delay down here in the desert on FoxSportsAZ and on FSNW as well.

The crowd was probably around 3800-4000, it was a good crowd, got into the game and the Griz seemed to feed off it for a while. Tinks made mention of it in the post-game radio show but said the "big" lead lulled them to sleep for a bit.

Cherry, Selvig, and Qvale on the floor together are incredibly impressive, it was an odd day with BQ in so much foul trouble through the game. However when those three are "on" it's a force out there, they help the other guys out there look good too because all three are great passers. Jamar and Steward are great compliments as role-players too. The black hole at the 2 spot is pretty obvious though, Wood couldn't keep up with the pace of play today and was beat a lot on defense too. Stockton was a bit better on defense but not much of a presnence on offense. Free throw shooting was shaky at best, 62.5% shooting helped keep NAU in the game in the last minute of the game.

NAU has some impressive playmakers, mostly #10 who beat anyone defending him, and #30 off the bench was solid when shooting from beyond the arc. Both teams without their bigs for the better portion of the game made it interesting - NAU struck me as a mostly undersized team but incredibly fast and really good in transition. They attacked underneath really well using screens a lot when BQ was out.

It was a fun game, the rematch should be a battle as well!

Dishnetwork carries NAUHS on 9411. The NAU football games were broadcast on it.

Baller, when should they have played? There are 2 ladies games tonight, are they not important enough

NO!

Ladyball should be outlawed.

I have never understood the semi-interest in lady ball from Griz and Bobcat fans.

Why am I not surprised that a weeb fan would feel this way. I suppose those women should already be pregnant with their 4th and in the kitchen making dinner, huh?

I always thought some of those Weber ball players were lesbian, but we all know there are none in Utah...or they would be killed by the "saints'...
I guess if your options are:
a) play w/ weaner
b) play w/ farm animals and furry sheep
c) watch a bunch a lesbians try to
hoop

I would choose c) too, I guess.

Didn't look like 4000 to me -- but, I didn't count bodies. I'd guess closer to 3500. Lots and lots of empty seats; we were the only people in our row.

Oh, but there were people right in front of us and people right behind is, so I don't think that was the problem. :?

There were a lot of people there, it took me 20 minutes waiting in line to buy a ticket. Unfortunately everyone was stuck in the General Admission seats and there was no eight minute dash. Plus there were alot of little people (kids?) that take up less space. So it looked like it wasn't as full as it actually was. I snuck down to the student section anyways and had a great seat.
