all eyes, of course, on our beloved joslyn (3 points, two rebounds, two assists, a block, 1-4 from downtown, in 12 minutes), but what a stunning display of ineptness on a national stage for women's basketball--especially after the men delivered such a classic game in their final. uconn's dismal first half masked the fact stanford basically had two bad halves, butchering layups and clanging jumpers that grade school kids could make. did a skunk get into the ventilation system at the alamo dome? this was a stinkeroo, almost unwatchable for the better part. tinkle probably launched more threes than her coach might have wanted, but she plays with incredible poise for a true freshman. she was actually far more effective than the all-american, jayne appel--almost helpless with an ankle injury.

you couldn't watch that game and not dream a bit--carla selvig has a growth spurt like her brother and winds up at 6'4", sullivan and nelson turn out to be stars, baker makes a great recovery from her injury, deboer blossoms as a sophomore...the season's over, dreams of next year.

you just described womens basketball. congrats to stanford keeping it within ten though. i assumed they'd lose by 20-30 like everyone else.

Stanford should have been up by 20 at the half. I guess that's what happens when you blow about a thousand lay-ups.

i will say this though about womens basketball. personally, it's just not exciting for me. however, being the basketball junkie i am, if i'm feeling like just watching sets and plays and actually learning about offenses...it doesn't get better than womans hoops most of the time. with the guys their athleticism often takes over, and while they'll begin the shot clock running a play, more times than not the shot clock ends with an athletic guy going one on one. more times than not though womens hoops is just to difficult for me to watch.

On the other hand, women's BB players generally have fewer tattoos and are otherwise far easier on the eyes.

Yeah, the game was definately a clunker. You want team on the national stage not to lay an egg. Reminded me of the Carolina-Kansas game from three years ago. Carolina stunk it up and was down by 25 or 30 for most of the game.

As for womens basketball, as a coach of girls basketball in the past, I get a bit frustrated at the expectations of viewers. Especially those expecting to see an equivilant of mens basketball. First, womens basketball at the college and professional level cannot and should not be expected to be a comparative of mens basketball. To think otherwise is foolhardy.

I personally will coach girls basketball over guys any day of the week. First you can win games on defense and fundmentals. In the guys game, it is taken over at times by rat ball (see Kentucky, Memphis) and lack of defense. The great thing about that national title game between Duke and Butler is that it was defense. Defense and more defense. moreover two teams who make 10-12 foot jumpshots and are efficient at everything they do. Something that IS NOT A premium in the mens game today. Duke will win national titles because Coach K generally recruits kids that play a team game, play defense and know their roles. The difference between Duke and Carolina this year wasn't talent. Carolina had loads of talent but no team atmosphere. Duke did.

I grew up watching lady griz doing the small things better than any other womens program in the region, they still do just not at the level as they once had. I like the womens game because while they'll butcher layups occasionally, they are in someways a better version of basketball in the team sense.

The women's game last night was certainly no worse than the last 10 minutes of the Butler-Michigan State game on Saturday. Both teams went 8 minutes without a field goal.

i don't know what expaectations there are to be honest. i don't recall anyone ever saying they EXPECT the womens game to be as good as the mens. what is often said is that BECAUSE the women aren't as exciting to watch...many people choose not to watch. most of us are basically saying everything you just said. the difference is you CHOOSE to coach women which is great. some people CHOOSE to only watch occasionally like myself. others CHOOSE to not watch at all. but i agree with you that if there is anyone out there that EXPECTS women to be equivilant to the men on the court...they are idiots! :thumb:

I tried watching the game, hoping Stanford would win...alas...women's bball is lacking something, I cannot say what....it is more of a team game, and the women generally appear to be better shooters but there is something missing...athleticism? coaching? I have to question a Hall of Fame coach decision to leave the Big girl from Stanford in the game when she was obviously not playing well, unable to shoot, and showed incredible poor judgement in shots, forgetting the team game....Tinkle could have done no worse. but, I digress....I find it hard to take women's bball serious...I tried, but just cannot...

i'm with ya grizla. i honestly think the biggest problem with the womens game is the lack of parity. with men, there is always that "any given sunday" mentality. we have seen 15 seeds beat 2 seeds. and we will eventually see a 16 beat a 1. there is just too much talent throughout the country and it gets spread out all over. obviously there is a difference between duke and murray state, but not near as much in the womens game. same reason you'll never again see a mens team go undefeated throughout an entire season. and NEVER EVER undefeated 2 seasons in a row. i'm not taking anything away from uconn, but it's kind of a joke what they have been able to do. if you're a girl who's the best in the country you want to go to uconn. after them maybe tennessee, stanford, and in recent years baylor. but there is just no element of surprise in the womens game. obviously there are always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part i think this is the biggest problem with womens hoops. face it...the biggest surprise of the entire tourney was that uconn only beat stanford by 10 instead of 30. :?

i think the women's game is missing basketball's home run--the spectacular flying dunk. dawn staley proved women can handle the basketball in the open court, and women shoot threes just as well as men, but who's gonna watch a three-point shooting contest over a dunk contest? we remember dr. j., and showtime with james worthy, and michael jordan taking off from the free throw line. even in montana we revere the dhlouy dunk on boston college, or the kral ferch dunk on st. john's in the ncaa tournament. this is the "hot stuff" of basketball, the material of an e.s.p.n. highlight reel, and the women don't have it.

still, i love that women play with their hearts, are better sports, sport fewer tatoos and have better names than the men. also that they're getting better. maya moore, brittney griner and the ogwumike gals (the nation's high school player of the year joins her sister at stanford next year) are raising the talent bar for women's basketball. i'm sorry this year's "dream matchup" was such a stinker, but still a fan of the game.

I don't disagree with much that has been said here. There IS a lot left wanting when observing womens basketball. Really to me the womens game is right about where the mens game was during the late 60's or early 70's.

my annoyance has little to do those who attempt to watch womens games understanding the differences, and still come to that conclusion. The womens game is a bear to watch sometimes and last night was an example of it. My annoyance comes from a populus that discards the womens as an inferior product and suggest that it sets back the game of basketball multiple generations. Is it different, is it less enthralling? In most cases. But to me comparing the two games is comparing apples and oranges.

There is such a talent gap from the top to the bottom of the womens game that does absolutely nothing for the promotion of the game outside of Storrs, Knoxville, and Palo Alto. The very simple decision of Jos going to Stanford over the University of Montana says it all. Her presence in the Big Sky conference would have been much like had Vince Carter chose Florida International and not North Carolina. She might have ended up as a lady griz all time great, but her presence at the UofM would have probably denied her what she has already, a chance to win a national title.

First who likes getting pummelled by 50 by UCONN or Tennessee? That is the reality every night that any team outside of the top 20 programs in the nation step on the court with the power teams. Not sure that happens all that consistently in the mens game.

Moreover, I think ESPN butchers their womens coverage. Present it as it is, not wrap it up in a pretty bow to help people realize it is a good game. You can wrap up crap in a bow but it is still crap. People are either going to like the womens game or they won't.
