UC Davis Aggies scouting report

I would be very surprised if UCD comes to WG stadium playing a late night game in the cold and beats UM. The Griz opponents are normally jacked to play in WG stadium which can be challenging but this is a big game for the Griz and they will be ready. I expect a decisive win.

From my outside perspective this just looks like a game to me that the griz roll. Night game. National tv. Place will be nuts. Plus I admit I'm a little biased about the Montana schools. I just feel like we're both way better than the rest. Of course now that I say that you guys will likely crush them and the Cats will lose the next week. That'd really chap my ass.
I hope you're right but, I don't see the Griz rolling them at all. They're a damn good team. My guess is it'll be a close game, decided in the last couple minutes. Part of me though can see this going really bad for us but, I'm trying to force those thoughts away.

Nice try throwing in the reverse jinx, there!

They are a really good passing team and our pass defense has been ass this year.

True. Having said that, Davis hasn’t really played a spectacular defense. Maybe Cal, but that was the first game of the year. They have played a lot of close games with teams they should have beat up on. Wa Griz at night, loud and cold. The only question is our offense. Do they let one of the QB’s actually settle in and run the offense for a full game? Doubtful, but that’s probably what needs to happen. The rotation may put me over the edge. Especially when one of them makes a mistake Ike throwing an interception. Bad dog for peeing on the floor. Let’s rub your nose in it. I don’t understand the philosophy. Is there one?

Are they that good?

They've played some not so great teams very close. Arguably should have lost to Portland State, but the BSC refs are the BSC refs.

Honesty is refreshing here!

Keys to a Grizzly victory

  • Make Larison uncomfortable all night. The Griz need to account for #3 all the time and make it a long night for him. He’s going to get big yards, he’s going to find the endzone, but limit how much he hurts you as best you can. Punish him, wear him down, and don’t ever lose track of him – especially on passing plays. I just don’t know how the Griz can “contain” him and totally shut him out. We just can’t have him running loose all over the whole night.
  • Keep the Griz QBs clean / get them in space. I was surprised to see a Davis D-line with multiple 280+ and 300+ pound guys didn’t have a lot of QB hit / sack stats. I figured they would just be manhandling O-lines and getting after more QBs. It seems in games where they’ve faced more mobile QBs / zone read teams they’ve had some issues – the QBs have some ok stats and the opponents primary RB has had solid games.
  • The Waffle House has to have their best night. If our WRs truly are “open 24/7” then let’s light up the night with a lot of big plays. The Davis pass defense has been prone to giving up yards. If the Griz OL can blend good protection for the QBs and allowing our guys to find holes in the Davis defense then we could be in for a fun night.
  • Keep Davis out of the endzone, even on multiple RZ trips. Interestingly Davis’s offense stalls a lot in the red zone, their kicker leads the Big Sky due to that, he’s made a ton of shorter kicks. It’ll be a win for the Grizzly defense if they can force 3 or more Davis field goal attempts in the game on RZ trips. Obviously the offense will need to answer those with TDs!
  • +2 or better in turnovers. A TALL order, the Grizzly defense might have found some turnover magic in the last 3 games and that needs to continue. Trick is, Davis has been playing real clean as of late. The Griz need to find some ways to rattle Hastings into a few errant passes and see if they can punch a ball out.
  • I said this on the pod, I’m getting some 2021 Griz/cat vibes here in the sense that I *think* the Grizzly ST could really help flip the field enough times that it’s the difference maker. If Bergen/Deck/Harris/Childs can take some punts/kicks for strong returns and give the Grizzly offense shorter fields that could be a major difference maker. Davis on average allows 10 yards per return and almost 22 yards per kick return.
  • We need some Wa Griz magic. In their 3 FCS road games Davis has played in front of an average of 4984 people. It moves to 11,807 if you add in the Cal game. They’ve played @ Cal, @ SUU, @ PSU and @ EWU. Would any of those stadiums / environments even come close to what our house can provide? Hell no. The fans need to be as crazy as they can. Make the place shake. Force false starts / hype the defense / cheer the offense. Our fans can really help push the hype factor and it will be a difference maker in the game.

Here’s what I’m trying to figure out. How good really is Davis? They have the best RB and the best passing QB in the conference. Their stats are pretty good in some spots but surprisingly not great in others. They’ve played 1 ranked team, Idaho, and beat them by after a failed 2 point attempt with Idaho on (I think) their 3rd or 4th string QB. When I break apart their home vs road it gets more interesting. Their home games they are undefeated and winning by an average margin of 42.2 – 15.8. When on the road they’re 3-1 and have an average scoring margin of 28-29. And if we drill down further and take out the Cal loss, in their 3 FCS road games that margin does move positive for them at 33-28.3. They’re allowing on average 28 ppg on the road in FCS games, Montana in the meanwhile is scoring 42.6 ppg at home this year. The Grizzly offense has shown they can put up big numbers and I believe they will again on Saturday.

This is going to be a wild game and I predict one just as stressful as the WCU / Weber / EWU ones… sorry guys haha. I am feeling goo about Montana, I think thanks to the special place that is Washington Grizzly Stadium, the Griz come away with a massive win on Saturday. I’m going to go 46-38 GRIZ.

Go Griz!
Nice work as always, BW!

Let’s beat their ass!

lots of reasons but the biggest factors are playing at home at night and our defense has improved over the last two games and will be improved even more this week and we will be putting up big run numbers...This game will not be as close as some people expect it to be.
I like your thought process and hope you are right.

I’d be alright with that outcome. However, I think Hastings and Larrison present a problem for your defense, but I believe your offense is a terrible matchup for their defense and you guys will probably be just fine. Guess we will see.

Hastings and Larrison present a massive problem for OUR defense as well…

The crowd will put the team on their backs and cause late false starts to close out a very close game.
