My main speculative point is there could be an underlying reason that he decided to leave that he is unwilling to disclose (it’s his right to omit it), it could be something as simple as he didn’t feel like he was getting enough respect or lack of playing time.

NIL rules now allow student athletes to make money outside of the institution, therefore, we should hold them accountable to their bill. Sorry but you can’t have this both ways. Either you stay on the team, or pay back the scholarship. Players are no longer “students first”. That trope died with the NIL legislation no?

who should "pay back" all the money for scholarships at other institutions that went to guys who quit those teams and transferred to the griz? you know, the starters and such you cheer on every game?
