Two junior forwards for the Montana State men’s basketball team have been suspended after being arrested in connection with thefts from vehicles.

Jeff Budinich and Tre Johnson were arrested early Sunday morning. Both were charged with two counts of criminal trespass to vehicles and two counts of theft.

Both Budinich and Johnson pleaded not guilty to the charges in Bozeman Municipal Court on Monday.

“Tre and Jeff will not participate in team activities, and that’s really the only comment I can make at this point,” men’s basketball coach Brad Huse said in a prepared statement. “I’m disappointed that we’re in this situation.”

According to charging documents:

Officers were dispatched to the area near Cooper Park shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday for reports of two men shining flashlights into parked vehicles.

Officers contacted Budinich and Johnson. When asked to empty his pockets, Johnson pulled out a GPS he said didn’t belong to him. He told officers he took the GPS from a truck parked on Sixth Avenue.

Budinich was wearing a backpack he admitted he stole from a vehicle parked on the 1000 block of West Koch Street. He also said they took a camera from the same vehicle.

The owner of the pickup truck reported that his checkbook was also missing. Budinich said they took the checkbook but left it by a tree near Sixth Avenue and Alderson Street.

The two were arrested and released after posting bonds of $1,820.

In the statement released by Montana State, Huse said he had nothing further to say about the players.

“When it’s appropriate we will re-evaluate their status in the program,” Huse said.

Johnson, a business major from Reno, Nev., started 20 of 26 games as a sophomore last year, averaging nine points and 6.2 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward was coming into his junior season with 48 career blocks, 10 away from breaking into MSU’s top-10 blockers of all time.

As a freshman, Johnson led the team with 19 blocked shots and averaged 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Budinich, a business major from Maple Valley, Wash., played in 25 games last season. The 6-foot-10, 250-pound forward averaged 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds a game. According to his profile on the Montana State website, Budinich scored 39 percent of his 116 points last year in the season’s final seven games.

Just makes you wonder how much longer can Huse survive at MSU? That program is a complete wreck right now.

Doesn't seem like anything can go right for Huse right now... boggles the mind how guys can do things so stupid.

Brad moved quick.....

BOZEMAN – Montana State men’s basketball coach Brad Huse dismissed forward Tre Johnson from his squad and imposed multiple disciplinary sanctions on forward Jeff Budinich, Huse said Friday.

The players were suspended from the program earlier this week after they were arrested for taking items out of parked vehicles in Bozeman.

Budinich’s sanctions include significant reduction of scholarship, a three-game suspension, community service, volunteer hours to the athletic department and an academic year evening curfew. In addition, Huse announced that the tour to Canada planned for next week has been suspended until a later date.

“The timing of the incident has impacted our plans to make this trip,” Huse said, “as we were planning to do the majority of our on-court work for the trip this week. We’ve decided to suspend those activities and suspend the trip for now.”

Calling the “allegations stemming from the incident (involving Budinich and Johnson) extremely disappointing and disheartening,” Huse said his decision to dismiss Johnson and extend Budinich’s suspension while maintaining his status on the MSU roster comes from a thorough evaluation of the time each has spent in the program.

Johnson started 20 games this past season and paced the Cats in rebounds with an average of 6.2 per game. Budinich averaged 11 minutes a game.

I'm not a MSU Bobcat but this is something positive.
