Both Budinich and Johnson pleaded not guilty to the charges in Bozeman Municipal Court on Monday.
“Tre and Jeff will not participate in team activities, and that’s really the only comment I can make at this point,” men’s basketball coach Brad Huse said in a prepared statement. “I’m disappointed that we’re in this situation.”
According to charging documents:
Officers were dispatched to the area near Cooper Park shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday for reports of two men shining flashlights into parked vehicles.
Officers contacted Budinich and Johnson. When asked to empty his pockets, Johnson pulled out a GPS he said didn’t belong to him. He told officers he took the GPS from a truck parked on Sixth Avenue.
Budinich was wearing a backpack he admitted he stole from a vehicle parked on the 1000 block of West Koch Street. He also said they took a camera from the same vehicle.
The owner of the pickup truck reported that his checkbook was also missing. Budinich said they took the checkbook but left it by a tree near Sixth Avenue and Alderson Street.
The two were arrested and released after posting bonds of $1,820.
In the statement released by Montana State, Huse said he had nothing further to say about the players.
“When it’s appropriate we will re-evaluate their status in the program,” Huse said.
Johnson, a business major from Reno, Nev., started 20 of 26 games as a sophomore last year, averaging nine points and 6.2 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-7, 210-pound forward was coming into his junior season with 48 career blocks, 10 away from breaking into MSU’s top-10 blockers of all time.
As a freshman, Johnson led the team with 19 blocked shots and averaged 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.
Budinich, a business major from Maple Valley, Wash., played in 25 games last season. The 6-foot-10, 250-pound forward averaged 4.5 points and 2.2 rebounds a game. According to his profile on the Montana State website, Budinich scored 39 percent of his 116 points last year in the season’s final seven games.
