Tressel resigns at Ohio State... coaching dominos will fall

Colin Cowherd on Missoula's ESPN radio this a.m., said that Tressel's obligation was to the university, not to his players, since it's the university paying his salary, and it's the university's reputation at stake. You may not like Cowherd, but he does bring up some great points & frequently is not afraid to put himself out on a limb. Later, on the same station with another host, it was said that Tressel regarded his players as his sons, and would do anything for them. Where is the line between a coach's loyalty to his school and his loyalty to his players? Did Tressel cross that line in favor of his players, and therefore deserved what he got?

BTW, Cowherd also mentioned that this Pryor kid, the QB, was the cause of Tressel's downfall, and that were it not for Pryor, Tressel would still have his job. Cowherd went on to say how these 5 star players are already giving press conferences IN HIGH SCHOOL, no less, and come to colleges with a sense of entitlement. How corrupt has college football become? I still say that the U.S. Congress may have to be the board of regents of last resort.

Believe it or not, I am actually for congress stepping into collegiate athletics. As for the pros, and steroids, not so much so. Professional athletics is for those truly getting paid, and adult enough to decide for themselves. College sports though is getting ruined by the greed, and it is only a matter of time before another big name program and coach gets busted again.

I don't know silvertip, but are you an Ohio State fan, too? You are right about college football though becoming about winning at all costs. It is not just at that level though. There are not many "clean" programs in the country over the last 25 to 30 years.

No, though my son-in-law is a grad of Thee OSU. My allegiance after the Griz is shared by Colorado (former season ticket holder) and Stanford (my daughter's alma mater).

I may be off the mark but, IMO, the colleges that are on the most up-and-up are those with stringent entry requirements. The Notre Dame's, Stanford and the military academies of the world hold their academic achievement above athletic performance. That does not mean they don't want to win but they have lost out of some top athletes over the years becaue of their entry requirements - good for them. That is why I love to see a Stanford or Notre Dame, Navy, Army, Boston College, etc. do well because they have not sold their soul.

As far as Tressell, he is a school employee so I agree with Colin. He has to run a clean program first and must be held accountable for the recruits he brings in. They are individuals and will make mistakes but you have to be upfront. Personally I think a lot of the NCAA rules are stupid and Nazi-like but they are what they are. If the boosters wanted Tressels head because he had to suspend top players...I think his job would be safe from the schools point of view.

I have read all of this thread and never once saw anything relating to Griz football.............:jack:

AG1 aka/ Rosie Palm: So maybe you could post something on Tate Foreskin, a popular subject, even though he has no past, present or future relationship to the Griz?

Pretty amazing. This is a tough one for me. I keep putting myself in Tressel's position and I'd like to think I would have done the right thing. However, considering the high amounts of pressure of the job and having that close personal relationship and responsibility for the athletes, it would be very easy to have fallen into the same human error. Beyond this incident, Tressel has run a pretty solid program with a good track record. In my opinion, he's one of the best coaches at the college level. I'm sure he'll get another chance somewhere, and that school will be getting a top level coach.

"...pressure of the job?..human error?..this incident(s)?..pretty solid program?..good track record?..another chance?..top level coach?..

"What unmitigated blather! The guy is a crook who let ego and a lack of integrity cause immeasurable and lasting damage to one of the country's premier programs and the truly honest people associated with it. Jim Tressel has just become the poster child for what's wrong with big time win-at-all- cost college football. Another chance for a top level coach? Hell no. But maybe he can retreat back to Youngstown, the rust bucket hole where the DeBartolo crime family practiced their trade before using dirty money to buy the 49er's. He'd be in good company. On the other hand, maybe you can cling to ADD, "the pressure of the job" or a bad childhood, or some other lame ass excuse for Tressel's laundry list of "human errors."

Yeah, never said that he shouldn't be held accountable or didn't deserve losing his job. He did. All I'm saying is that I understand why he did what he did and think he deserves another chance somewhere else. He is in a high pressure job, where he is paid a very high salary and is expected to produce at a high level every year. He made a big judgement error here, but I don't think it is enough to chase him out of college football with torches and pitchforks. Name one coach anywhere that has reported a student violation to the NCAA. They don't do it. In most instances coaches and athletic directors err on the side of protecting their student athletes and their eligibility. Bottom line is Tressel should have been more honest, but I've got to believe this sort of things happens in most programs.

What was that? Sounds like a toilet flushing. No, no toilet. It's just the sound of OSU football circling the bowl. We may be witnessing the unthought of, the destruction of Buckeye football. USC is watching what the NCAA will do with just the tatoo-gate stuff. Now the car dealer deals. What is the next shoe to drop? All started by a e-mail. That guy should be looking into the witness protection program. The coaching carousel does, indeed, begin again. How many recruits will bail from the program now? Wolverine fans are probably laughing themselves unconscious. Sad.

Curious if there will be any QBs available.

NO I'M NOT -- that's just the usual question that's associated with about anything

HERE'S MY POINT:

Remember recently the Big 10 (12) floated the trial balloon about giving more money to players on schollies? Free Tattoos, great deals on cars, sell your autographed athletic crap, and get paid, too.

Why people love Division 3 ... but I'm sure there probably is some stuff that stinks there, too...

Ohio St coach Tressel resigned today. This linked article is good and lists prior Ohio St and Youngstown St ncaa issues.

College football is corrupt only to the extent its fan base and boosters are corrupt. So, fans & boosters, better back down. You don't, Uncle Sam will be on your tail. :geek:

Tressel had great teams at Ohio State. Tressel cheated at Ohio State. Tressel had great teams at Youngstown. Youngstown has not had much since he left. Did Tressel cheat at Youngstown?

To paraphrase Aristotle: We are what we consistantly do.

Jim Tressel has a history of cheating dating back to the mid '80s. To assume that he didn't cheat at Youngstown is naive at best.

Silenoz: Don't know where you got your information, but good call. One hell of an article. This may make USC's problems look small by comparison. To retain any credibility, the NCAA will have to come down on them hard. I think that, at the least, we have heard the last of Terrelle and the boys. Forget the five game suspension. In reference to the Reggie Bush NCAA sanctions, a NCAA spokesman said, "high profile players merit high profile sanctions."

The SI.com article summarizes everything. Due out in the June 6 edition of SI. According to the article, the problem revolves around their stud quarterback Ray Isaac and boosters. $10,000 over four years, and a car. Also, jobs for 13 football players, and other non-scholarship athletes paid by the universities director of athletic development. Self imposed sanctions and the expiration of the statute of limitations lead the NCAA to let Youngstown State keep its 1991 1-AA national title. Tressel left after the 2000 season, ten months after the investigation ended.
