Their passing game was mostly sideline fades, but regardless of where it went, they completed 60% of their throws.
I did misspeak when I said everyone though, because I didn't account for you being a the consumate narcissist. SDSU was the only team to shut them down, and most of that was having both of the QB's out. You don't average more than 300 a game if your o-line can't block their assess off. They had a wide receiver run for more than 200 in a game when they didn't have someone from the normal running back room to trot out there. They're not maulers in terms of size, they get to a spot, cut off the other guy and hold a block long enough for the runner to get by them. In fact, if you watched them play, you noted that their receivers actually blocked very well, which made that even easier in terms of gaining yards.
Everyone would have loved a healthy Johnson. But as has been said on multiple occasions here, its been two seasons in the last fifteen or sixteen that a QB made it the distance. 2021 wasnt an aberation. Runnng QB's get dinged up or worse. That they spent all their time trying to get an injured QB ready post the idaho game is what it is. QB's are good passers without their legs, and he was a streak passer at best. Johnson's absence wasn't any more of an impact on the season than the whole team coming out flat against Weebs, bozeman, (two of the four that mattered most before the post season) and the Semo. Regardless of Johnson's performance, they would have lost the Semo game without the heroics of 19 and 5.
bozeman played fourteen games last season because it didnt matter which of their QB's were playing, it was the o-line that paved the way for their offense to be successful enough to win. No one was going to beat SDSU last season. I'd put money on them to repeat that feat this season.
And finally, If you'd like to DM me, I'd be happy to explain when and from whom I heard that Sain wasn't all that and bag of chips. And it wasn't anyone who spends any time on the message board.
There offense isn’t gimmicky per se, but saying they ran an outside zone concept and that it’s been around in the form they ran it for decades is disingenuous. The +1 running game with an outside zone makes the defense be much more accountable for an additional player. Just as when you have a running capable qb with the spread system, it comes down to discipline and run lanes which we did not do a good job of last year. I liken it to the winged t or wishbone of the past. They are perceived as gimmicky now though they were seen as novel and innovative in their time.
They have also benefited from years of strong o-line play, coaching and development and paired with true running qb’s that are tough and interchangeable is a great decision for offensive strategy. Even though they have a lot of returners, I see teams being much more prepared for their scheme this year than last. With a tougher schedule, if they start to get banged up, it might be a different season for them this year.

Traditional inside zone is typically aiming the ball carrier between the guards. The outside zone is a function of getting outside the tackle, to the are where a tight end would normally be lined up. Blocking schemes are formulated to facilitate the strategy. Their offense was modified to more QB run because for most of the year, they didn't have a running back from the actual running back room to put on the field. Sound familiar? Yet they managed a 200 yard performance by a wide receiver filling in. Mellott and Chambers accounted for about half the yards rushing, on average, per game. They still managed 150 per game with a bunch of no-name guys who benefited from great blocking.
Plus one is not a new concept either, and Hauck admitted after they game, they had nothing for it. I would suggest to you that the year prior in Missoula, against an arguably better group at offensive line, they were unblockable. Why do you suppose that was? Coming out flat, when there was everything to play for, was the difference in the performance between last year and the year prior in Missoula. They were flat against Weebs and started the game flat against SEMO and without the return game, lose in the first round. Conversely, they were a house on fire at SacState and played a great half against NDSU, until forced to go with a non-exisitent backup, and reverting back to an inability to get off a block.
Maybe check the stats, bozeman has been one of the top rushing teams in the FCS since about Choates second season. Three games ago in bozeman, hauck spent all week getting ready for that plus one back, named Troy Anderson. What a surprise it must have been to see him in street clothes watching his teammates, ifanse in particular, run the ball down their throats. All of that, regardless of strategy, or player availability, is possible because as you note, they benefit from strong o-line play, which isn't likely to change this season, barring catastrophic injury. And yes, on paper their schedule looks more difficult, even though there are two new head coaches and three quarterbacks in two of those tough games, so I guess we'll see if my premise, that great line play is the key to winning football games, holds.

Okay. How many team frequently have 2 QB’s on field at the same time? Please name the teams.
How many teams have so many of the rushing yards from their QB’s?
How many teams run so much wildcat?
How many teams have so much so much of their pass game with jump ball fades?
Name all the teams with a similar offense.
You proved my point on healthy QB’s. UM offense was great with its qb healthy. MSU had 2 very good qb’s and at least one was healthy every game, except maybe SDS game. Then the Cat offense sucked.
You are a narcissist.

The best O-lineman on the team at years end, minus the injury bug, will be wearing 55. Nebraska missed on him, big time.
You previously knocked the guy as DLman who had done nothing and was unlikely to develop into a good OLman. Among your many other knocks on our OL and the coach. The back peddling is appropriate. This is a good OL.AZGrizFan said:bgbigdog said:The best O-lineman on the team at years end, minus the injury bug, will be wearing 55. Nebraska missed on him, big time.
He’s good. But I dont’ think he’s Mayginnes good. I like them both, though.

I've knocked who? MayGinnes? No I haven't. You're getting senile in your old age and conflating discussions. There's ZERO backpedaling here (or peddling, lol). I've been nothing but supportive of MayGinnes, Forbes and Walker since their arrivals. It's the RIGHT side of the line I had issues with...and I've also been supportive of Brown being replaced by Grimsrud. And any issue I've had with the GROUP'S performance as a UNIT has been a coaching issue. Feel free to show me ANY post I've made that was critical of Walker, MayGinnes, Forbes or Grimsrud as individuals.
I'll wait.

This is hysterical. Montana was 8th in the conference in passing, with a lesser completion rate, about forty yards per game on average, and five more touchdowns more the whole season. Oh yeah, if only there was a healthy Johnson. Or a plan to have a backup ready.

Oh, and if you love the bubcatz so much, why don’t you marry them?
Impossible! Altho you are eons older than me, you’re not even a Griz fan. You used the phrases “proud bobcat” and “waiting out the change“ in the same post.bgbigdog said:garizzalies said:Is there like a de-coder ring needed to decipher your posts?

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, this did get out of whack.
My mom was a proud bobcat, and helped run the nursing school for a brief time while I was at Monana. I've likely been a griz fan for longer than you've been alive. Right now, just waiting out the change of the guard, though I do root for the players. It's not their fault, things are as is. .
Yeah, this confused me too. I don't think it's possible to be proud to be a Bobcat. Even in years like the last one where they won one to get, almost, within 30 wins of the Griz total, it would still be shame. Less shame I'll grant you but shame all the same. And if I'm wrong may a drunk football coach run into a meineke muffler looking building so hard that the flat roof caves in and covers me in blue solo cups full of Bobcat batter.garizzalies said:Impossible!
