Too many mistakes early, good composure, adjustments, dominant D in 2d half, and a nice win

Playing Devils Advocate here.
Same thing every week. What it boils down to is Bobby and the Boys didn't have the team prepared, period.
Why can't the offense get together a sixty minute game plan instead of a thirty minute Bandaid? Rosie must have chuckled to Wulff at halftime last week, and said, "I told you so!" Its almost as if there is a third party pulling strings, manipulating the score. Someone powerful, with a gambling problem, betting large?

Relying on the defense to pull their ass out of the fire has been a trademark of Bobby 2.0, IMHO.
Pretenders, not Contenders?

And here I thought that consistently good halftime adjustments were a sign of a good coaching staff.....

Second half adjustments are a testament to the coaching staff. However, I don't disagree with Tourist. This could come to bite us. We have to start better.
I mean, the statement that playing poorly at times can come back to bite us, I completely agree with. The statement that this is a sign that the staff doesn't have the players prepared is not as logically sound, to me. They have to be incredibly well prepared to even make those adjustments and understand the differences in what is being asked of them.

I would also dispute that we cannot put together a sixty minute gameplan. The gameplan was fine for this game. There were HUGE drops on our end, while their receivers made catches in the first half that they have not made all year and didn't make in the second half. That's just football, but I don't see any indictment of the staff on having the kids prepared based on the first half of last week. Cal Poly had also made some significant defensive adjustments coming in to the game.

Lastly, the claim that we are relying on the defense to bail us out is kind of the opposite of how this year has gone. It has been the offense responding with points time and time again this season.

So, I agree with your point that playing poorly for a half can come back to bite us. I don't see anything to suggest there is a lack of the coaches having the team prepared for the game, though.

I am more worried about how we are starting and our consistency in the first half. We have scored on 4/6 opening drives this year, but there is a huge lull after that and into the second quarter. I don't believe we have poor gameplan as you mentioned there wouldn't be anything to turn to at half without that. It's not unique for teams to start slow and get better throughout the game. Happens to Georgia every week.

I think we are outscoring our opponents 142-58 in the second half. Obviously, that is a very good trend. I am worried that our playbook completely changes once we get down to a good team in the first half and our best player (Gilman) will no longer be featured. we've only scored 71 first half points and haven't played anyone outside of North Dakota. I think we have a very very good chance of making a deep run and possibly winning the dang thing with the skill talent we have. We have a dangerous dangerous team in terms of speed.

I think all of that is fair, and I don't disagree with a word of what you said. I do think we came out looking to put up first half points, and the shots we took just didn't land right, but I certainly do look forward to next weekend when we put on a full 60 minute show.

To be honest, I am not worried about playing a perfect 60 minutes, I just want to see more consistency between halves.

Hoops had mentioned it in his write up, but I really didn't think there were problems in the first half. I texted him at half time that we would shut them down and put up 28 points in the second half. I was watching from home, but it was clear as day to me that with just a couple of plays going our way instead of theirs, we would have been up at the half and on the way to victory. We had two drives early on end at 3 and out just because of a drop, they happen.

I'm just not buying the narrative that there was a bad first half in this game. I know I am in the minority in that belief.

I think consistency is the most important. We've scored 105 3rd quarter points compared to 38 first quarter points and out of those 38 I believe 28 of them have come on the opening drive. I don't disagree that we have missed opportunities, but we have to play to our potential in my view.

Either the offense played like garbage for three quarters or Cal Poly's Defense is top ten quality.

I don't think the play calling was too fancy. I think that Paul Wulfe is a good coach and game planned where he needed to shut UM's offense down. The defense broke Cal Poly, not the Griz offense.

Ah Yat needs to make better decisions. Periodt. Throwing long 4 times is great and exciting, but 10.5 yards is a first down every time. It looked like he was improving game after game, then along came Poly. Hopefully it was a fluke, and he returns to form for the rest of the season. He REALLY needs to stop turning the ball over.

The Griz defense was freaking great. That's all.

Gillman should be in the top 3 for the Payton Award. He is 9th in YPC. He is 2nd in RTD. He is 5th in RYPG. He is 2nd in Scoring. There are no other offensive players in the nation at his level of performance other than LJ Phillips from South Dakota. Everyone else is in a middle to bottom shelf conference. Yes, Wortham is lightening in a bottle, but he doesn't have the resume Eli does.

The Griz D dominated the second half.

Hoops says this is a fun team. I disagree. It's not fun to have to watch a team that should be dominating in games, instead of climbing out of the dumpster fires they start. That is going to bite them in the big 'ol maroon peach if they keep doing it. I like watching close games, but NOT when the Griz are playing down to that team instead of where they should be, like UND. TAHT was a fun game. Idaho was a fun game. The rest have not been fun.

6-0. They need to keep improving and reduce mistakes. I didn't realize the Griz D had dominated the 2d half like that. Injuries don't seem to be too bad. I'm hopeful and excited.

"The Griz were outgained 276 yards 146 in the first half but turned it around to force three second half turnovers and limited the Mustangs to just 60 total yards, two complete passes, and one first down in the second." That is domination."

Again, I have to disagree. Domination would have been holding CP to 60 yards in BOTH halves, not just 60 in the second half.

"I told them in the locker room after the game, that's what good football teams do. They find different ways to win," said head coach Bobby Hauck.

I respectfully agree Coach Hauck. Good teams find different ways to win.

I respectfully and disagree with Coach Hauck. Good teams don't consistently play from behind. Good teams consistently play 4 full quarters of ball. I disagree that good teams take the foot off of the gas because they are up by two or three scores. Yeah okay, start rotating starters out and your bench in, but don't slow everything down in the name of "sportsmanship." 1) it doesn't help with rankings, and 2) it teaches your players they can take time off and slack.

And while I am at it, I'm sick and tired I am of hearing "Deerrr tha Griz ur a secon haf team derrr." STFU! I have been hearing this crap for almost three decades. That's an excuse for crap play calls and not game planning properly. Prior planning prevents piss poor performance. 6P principle. It applies to everything in life. Are you going to have to make adjustments in the game? Of course, football is a dynamic sport, and the game evolves on the field with good or busted plays, injured players, broken or boosted confidence, but a good team doesn't consistently play from behind. If you disagree with me, then talk to Lou Saban, Urban Meyer, Jim Tressell, Dabo Sweeny, Joe Paterno, Ryan Day, or Curt Cignetti (Hate saying it). Oh and you can bet that Dan Lanning is hearing about game planning and in game adjustments this week form the boosters and Administrati0on, and fans.

Okay, my rant aside, the Griz ARE a good team. The athletes, talent, desire, skill, and coaching are all there.

I believe UM is as good if not better than NDSU and I truly believe they are better than MSU and SDSU. I think, and this is merely my worthless, means exactly nothing to a billion screaming people, that the difference is game planning and who has their team ready.

NDSU, MSU, and SDSU are not some juggernaut teams that can't be beaten. Heck, New England was a team of average to maybe above average players when they started their Superbowl dynasty. SO was NDSU. The difference, I think is buy in from the team. Those men don't "think" they are going to win" or "hope they win" or "believe they can win"... THEY KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO WIN. That's the difference.

Either the offense played like garbage for three quarters or Cal Poly's Defense is top ten quality. [The CP D had a good gameplay and played very well in the first half. The Griz mistakes also hurt them. Missed receivers and more]

I don't think the play calling was too fancy. [You didn't think the 20 yard fumble was too fancy? I do.] I think that Paul Wulfe is a good coach and game planned where he needed to shut UM's offense down. The defense broke Cal Poly, not the Griz offense.

The Griz D dominated the second half. [That's exactly what I said.]

Sin City seems to base his view of the game/team on how the first half went.

Well seeing that rant, I guess we should be playing against tackling dummies. Yes this team has flaws, and it could hurt them down the road, but they are undefeated at this time, so enjoy it. It hasn’t happened this late into the season in almost 2 decades. They are playing against division 1 teams with division 1 athletes on scholarship, with division 1 coaches that are doing their absolute best to beat us. This isn’t a video game and not every play call in all three phases will be successful. Opponents will make plays, we will make mistakes.

These aren’t robots, they are college kids with things going on at school, in their personal life, on the field and in the locker room. Like all fans it can be frustrating, but I guarantee it’s a million times more frustrating to the athletes and coaches. As a fan we are not entitled to anything except the enjoyment of spending some time out of the monotony of our day to days to watch a game or discuss a team and university we care about.

Full honesty - the Griz have until Cat/Griz to figure this out. There are only three teams in the country who would beat the Griz if they take the first half off. They have shown that they can play like $hit for two quarters and still win against lesser teams. IF the Griz can get healthy and play a full game - watch out!
