Either the offense played like garbage for three quarters or Cal Poly's Defense is top ten quality.
I don't think the play calling was too fancy. I think that Paul Wulfe is a good coach and game planned where he needed to shut UM's offense down. The defense broke Cal Poly, not the Griz offense.
Ah Yat needs to make better decisions. Periodt. Throwing long 4 times is great and exciting, but 10.5 yards is a first down every time. It looked like he was improving game after game, then along came Poly. Hopefully it was a fluke, and he returns to form for the rest of the season. He REALLY needs to stop turning the ball over.
The Griz defense was freaking great. That's all.
Gillman should be in the top 3 for the Payton Award. He is 9th in YPC. He is 2nd in RTD. He is 5th in RYPG. He is 2nd in Scoring. There are no other offensive players in the nation at his level of performance other than LJ Phillips from South Dakota. Everyone else is in a middle to bottom shelf conference. Yes, Wortham is lightening in a bottle, but he doesn't have the resume Eli does.
The Griz D dominated the second half.
Hoops says this is a fun team. I disagree. It's not fun to have to watch a team that should be dominating in games, instead of climbing out of the dumpster fires they start. That is going to bite them in the big 'ol maroon peach if they keep doing it. I like watching close games, but NOT when the Griz are playing down to that team instead of where they should be, like UND. TAHT was a fun game. Idaho was a fun game. The rest have not been fun.
6-0. They need to keep improving and reduce mistakes. I didn't realize the Griz D had dominated the 2d half like that. Injuries don't seem to be too bad. I'm hopeful and excited.
"The Griz were outgained 276 yards 146 in the first half but turned it around to force three second half turnovers and limited the Mustangs to just 60 total yards, two complete passes, and one first down in the second." That is domination."
Again, I have to disagree. Domination would have been holding CP to 60 yards in BOTH halves, not just 60 in the second half.
"I told them in the locker room after the game, that's what good football teams do. They find different ways to win," said head coach Bobby Hauck.
I respectfully agree Coach Hauck. Good teams find different ways to win.
I respectfully and disagree with Coach Hauck. Good teams don't consistently play from behind. Good teams consistently play 4 full quarters of ball. I disagree that good teams take the foot off of the gas because they are up by two or three scores. Yeah okay, start rotating starters out and your bench in, but don't slow everything down in the name of "sportsmanship." 1) it doesn't help with rankings, and 2) it teaches your players they can take time off and slack.
And while I am at it, I'm sick and tired I am of hearing "Deerrr tha Griz ur a secon haf team derrr." STFU! I have been hearing this crap for almost three decades. That's an excuse for crap play calls and not game planning properly. Prior planning prevents piss poor performance. 6P principle. It applies to everything in life. Are you going to have to make adjustments in the game? Of course, football is a dynamic sport, and the game evolves on the field with good or busted plays, injured players, broken or boosted confidence, but a good team doesn't consistently play from behind. If you disagree with me, then talk to Lou Saban, Urban Meyer, Jim Tressell, Dabo Sweeny, Joe Paterno, Ryan Day, or Curt Cignetti (Hate saying it). Oh and you can bet that Dan Lanning is hearing about game planning and in game adjustments this week form the boosters and Administrati0on, and fans.
Okay, my rant aside, the Griz ARE a good team. The athletes, talent, desire, skill, and coaching are all there.
I believe UM is as good if not better than NDSU and I truly believe they are better than MSU and SDSU. I think, and this is merely my worthless, means exactly nothing to a billion screaming people, that the difference is game planning and who has their team ready.
NDSU, MSU, and SDSU are not some juggernaut teams that can't be beaten. Heck, New England was a team of average to maybe above average players when they started their Superbowl dynasty. SO was NDSU. The difference, I think is buy in from the team. Those men don't "think" they are going to win" or "hope they win" or "believe they can win"... THEY KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO WIN. That's the difference.
