Tinks Contract Extension/Renewal

Anyone have any insight as to the progress (or lack thereof) on Tinks' contract? I cant believe the school hasnt made any announcement of headway, especially considering the fact his daughter may want to play for the Lady Griz next year. I would think that the uncertainty of Tinks contract for future years doesnt help in Joslyn's recruitment.

I will put Joslyn aside on this one. I know Tinks well, and he nor Robin would never use Jos as a pawn in this one. I honestly feel the boosters are 50/50 regarding renewing his contract. Personally everyone loves Tinks and his family. Professionally he is learning, and the GRIZ living up to high expectations and faring well in postseason will determine much this year. If the GRIZ are playing well early this year, the extension could come by Christmas. If they are struggling and still looking for an identity, it may be put off until the season is over.

With that said, I feel the University is making a huge mistake waiting on a decision. Waiting makes for a huge recruiting disadvantage for any program. Myself, due to Tinks and his family being upstanding people, his ability to recruit, and run a clean program, I would renew his contract for 3 more years with a steep buy out. If this talent plays to their potential Tinks may have a few opportunities. If not, Tinks may never have another hc job at this level.

I feel Tinks is getting better every year, and nobody can deny his passion and sincerity for the University of Montana. I feel he would be here for quite a long time, which is huge for this University. I support Tinks 100%. What is the link to email O'day regarding support for Tinks?

i agree that tinkle is a good recruiter and done very nicely in that area, but how can we say that he is "getting better". His two teams have finished with worse records than they had the year before, and if i'm not mistaken that is not getting better. it doesn't matter if he can get the best players in the country to come to montana because if his teams are not producing and winning games and league championships, something needs to be done. i think the griz will be good this year, but lets be honest we all thought that the last two years so i'm not holding my breath. until tinkle proves he can win on the court(which is all that matters) and not just on the recruiting trail, lets not be so quick to call him what he's not.

I can see your outlook on this, and I do not know how close you are too the players or coaches. However, I have spent 3 weeks every summer except this past summer helping the GRIZ staff with camps since LK took over, then Tinks. I have met every player on each team since. I got to know a few pretty well away from the court. Each of them great people in their own right. With that said though, Tinks was left with some personality conflicts on and off the court his 1st year. That coupled with some changes he personally made that did not go with what LK was doing before him made for a difficult situation. The lack of athleticism at 1 through 3 with LKs recruits hurt bad. Finally Tinks was able to recruit some leadership and athleticism this year.

The additon of athleticism combined with some true leaders will be a huge difference this year! Last year our lack of a true 3 killed us. The year before the ego's of a few SR's killed that team. As highly as I think of Dloughy as a person off the court. He seemed to not care as much or at all his SR year. When Mayes got some time this team got better, and that created tension beyond anyones imagination. Which surprised me, because both those guys are great off the court. To this day, I do not know what happened when or how things happened, but the chemistry just was not there very often.

Wayne has his players this year, and the addition of the newbies will be huge this year. Portland State is loaded, and if not for them returning Dominguez, I would rank the GRIZ as favorites this year. However, being realistic this year, I see no reason why the GRIZ cannot finish in top 2, and barring injuries go 11-5 or better in conference this year. If we do not see the continuity, team defense, rebounding and no chemistry this year, well then I will give you credit. I very much doubt the problems of the last 2 years will resurface this year. This group is very tight knit and all on the same page this year.

those are all valid points and you may be right, maybe he will be great and i hope he is. that being said in tinkle's first year he had nine returners from LK's tournament team. those same personality conflicts that brought tinkle's team down did not bring LK's team down. there may have even been more because i know that kevin criswell had conflicts with some of his teammates as did virgil matthews. and let's be honest, in division 1 basketball the egos are extremely high on every team, and yet some coaches get their players to buy in to what they want and force them to lay their egos aside once on the court. they don't have to get along, they just have to play together

To be honest, it appeared to me and from what I heared, there were 2 positions 2 years ago that created some animosity that divided the team. PG and SF- Martin/Ellis and Dlouhy/Mayes. I feel Martin/Ellis did their best not to add fuel to the fire, but Dlouhy/Mayes I believe was another story that we will never know more about. Some experience on WT's part would have stomped out this situation, but a 1st year HC learning on the job, that is hard to overcome. Lets hope for the best either way this year. :)

By no means am I suggesting Wayne or Robin as using Joslyn in Contract negotiations, Im more pointing at the school as getting off their butts and extending his contract, and theres a perfect reason right there in front of them in Joslyn, not to mention the remainder of your post, which is far more important in terms of the future of Mens Basketball.

yea, barely made BSC tourney while being unanimous pick in national publications to win the conference. somebody look up "underperform" in the dictionary and see if there' a picture a Tinkle in there.

Also Joslyn is not going to UM. Think about it.....Stanford or ...uh....Montana.....where she grew up.

Both nice people.....both need to move on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is this being debated right now? Conference play is a ways off, he has another year on his current contract. Let the season play out then sign/fire him after the fact.

Honestly, if they had to do the contract right now, they would base it off his work performance of last year, and we know how that worked out.

huge failure of administration here. this is where a good boss looks at character and potential, and if he sees it, signs the coach to a long-term deal while taking the heat from the alums and working closely with the coach to fix the problems in the program. if i were the a.d., tinks would have a three-year contract in his pocket right now.

this is not some vagabond coach. he's got roots at montana. he's proved he can recruit. no matter his current record, you can always be sure he's representing the university in the best possible way. and while the current record is not what many of us fans would have liked (i still remember that terrible game in sacramento two years ago), anybody close to the program can see that positive changes have been made. bill evans brings much-needed experience to the coaching staff. team dissension seems to have been eliminated. last year's recruiting class looks to be a good one. i know it's unheard of today's what-have-you-done-for-me-last quarter wall street mentality, but patience remains a virtue, and a bit of patience here will pay later, i guarantee. this from a dyed-maroon griz basketball fan: ignore the crankbutts. tinkle is worth keeping.

I agree 10000% on this! Good post city.

I am not 100% certain on this, but I don't think O'Day can sign him to an extension while the existing contract is in place. I believe there is a window written into the contracts that allow the parties to negotiate an extension. If he signed a new contract now, it would in effect, be a 4 year contract, and that is not allowed.

And unfortunately, I don't think it makes any difference to Jos.

Also worth noting these multiyear contracts need to be approved by the board of regents. The board of regents are only going to award contracts based on past performance... spoke with jim about this a while back.

I think we should hire Hauck as our basketball coach too. At least he can get us to the playoffs.

Robin Selvig and Wayne Tinkle both entered into their 3 year contracts at the same time for same period.

Robin just had his original 3 year contract replaced with a new 3 year contract just this past July.

So, while they may not be able to sign him to an extension, they could just replace it with a new contract.

But, then, Selvig earned it, Wayne has not.

All of this may very well be true about his family and what kind of people they are. However, when it comes to a persons job performance especially in the world of professional sports and collegiate athletics that stuff for the most part and more often than not, means jack squat. The reality of the situation is that boosters fork over a lot of $ and they want reseults, especially when the talent is there and 3-4 years ago the program was on top of the conference and going to the tourney and advancing. The last 2 seasons have moved the program in the opposite direction of where it was at. As an athletic administrator you need to factor in public image, ticket sales, booster's wants and desires, and winning %. Public image wise Marso did not help that situation at all and the fact he was let to come back 2-3 weeks after his arrest did not sit very well with a lot of boosters and non-boosters. Granted it wasn't Tinks fault he still is held accountable for his players and staffs actions. Ticket sales, well when the team is underacheiving in the fans mind they aren't going to attend games period. Booster's wants and desires- I think that has already been covered. Winning % has decreased over the last 2 seasons without the factor of graduating a lot of 4 -5 year players and that again shows the program is moving in the wrong direction.
As for his duaghter coming to the UOf M, should not even be mentioned in his contract renewal debate because, the A.D. has to do what's best for the entire athletic department with his decesions as opposed trying to help the women's basketball program land a big recruit. That's Selvigs job and that's why he gets extensions becuase, he does his job very well.

Bottomline in my opinion is Tinks needs to get to the BSC title game this season or get 24+ wins to earn an extenion becuase, he has the talent and support to get it done but, he now needs to manage success as opposed to underacheiving. I think the Administration is doing the right thing by waiting and it's not going to have an effect on recruiting. Having a losing season and underacheiving has a far greater affect on that area then a contract extenion for the head coach will ever have.

Exactly. You know what affects recruiting more than a coach in the last year of his contract? .500 records. He signed a 3 year deal, let him play it out for 3 years. Plus, the administration isn't going to go to the board of regents asking for permission to give a 3 year deal and have that get shot down.
