Time for an overhaul

I think we can and we will get back to the top. It's just silly to believe that it will happen over night or over the course of one year. We have a lot of advantages over the rest of the BSC. We have the largest fan base, one of the larger budgets, and we rank at or near the top in academic institutions. Plus we are a flag ship school with more name recognition and a strong and loyal alumni base. Very few schools in our conference have that. If we can just get those facilities up to the standard of our stadium, this place become a very attractive place to play or coach.

One thing that doesn't help is all this passive aggressive whining and calling out the coaches on a message board that recruits read...

Imagine how much worse those recruits read from fans of teams without our tradition. That is providing they find much said on many other FCS fan forums. :thumb:

Good point. We have a passionate fan base, which is definitely an asset. Also, I'm sure if you read just about any other message board you'll get similar bickering about coaches. I just know that if a recruit is contemplating offers from UM and other schools and they come on here and read all the negative opinions on the coaching staff, that it doesn't help our cause.

Actually, I think this board has gotten better at not taking shots at the players. As for the coaches it is not all bad. Most are just criticizing the inconsistent play calling and defensive strategy. Other than those things, most the comments about coaching are positive. Very few have said anything about the coaches on the personal side of things. The staff did improve from 2012 to date. Can they improve more from 2013 to 2014? What is so wrong with comments of that kind?

If I remember correctly, when we got back from getting whooped by Georgia Southern in the 1989 playoffs, Don Read identified the problem, lack of team speed, and fixed that through recruiting. I'm waiting for MD's breakthrough insight for this team......a search which should in his mirror.

Gametime, I agree with your post and I admittedly have been critical of this staff. Truth is, nothing is going to change for at least one more year and possibly longer if Engstrom is involved with the selection of the next HC. National search needs to be done - period. Engstrom will likely handcuff Haslam and incest/nepotism will continue. Watching UND today and now I really feel the Griz are behind the 8 ball. This coaching staff does not have what it takes. Starts at the top.

Copper, did you ever tell us which linebacker was the horrible open field tackler who always dove down at runners?

I agree with pretty much everything you are saying and I think the criticism being voiced towards this staff is warranted. But winning close games is a credit to the coaches and players. They could have folded but they made plays and won.

I agree that winning close games is a credit to the coaching and players. But can't Southern Utah say the same thing?

I am talking about what it takes to get the team and program back to Championship level football, not a good team, but a great team. We are now becoming satisfied with just barely beating teams we should be dominating. Winning a close game against NDSU, sure great. But winning a close game to South Dakota, not so much.

Who is satisfied with just barely beating teams? I don't see or sense that.

Winning consistently, let along dominating, is very difficult. Many UM fans are spoiled and don't understand what it takes to win consistently or dominate, in my view. UM was on a very special and long roll for a long period of time.

UM has almost never had better talent than all of the competition, even in the Big Sky. UM stayed on or near the top with good and very good talent, hard work, a winning tradition, good coaching, etc.

There are alot of good teams in the Big Sky and in FCS. It's going to be hard to get back on top, let alone dominate. The loss of scholarships will hurt. Budget issues will have an effect. Having to find a new coach in the coming years will have some effect. The emergence of EWU, as well as the Cats, has some effect. It will certainly not be easy. There are many forces working against UM. In my view, the goals should continue to be set very high, but the expectations of some fans is probably not realistic.

Having JJ back next year is a bright spot.

After watching the NDSU/CC game, I feel a realistic expectation was getting to the round of 8. Would have I expected us to beat NDSU? I would not have, but sure would have liked to had the opportunity.

Your last sentence says it all. What will this current staff do when they don't have luxury of JJ making this staff look better than it is? I pray after next season we move in another direction and we have a qb capable of taking the torch from JJ with great results.

Yes, JJ makes coaches look better just like Vernon Adams makes EWU coaches look better, the FSU qb makes his coaches looks better, Manziel makes AM coaches look better, Griffin made Baylor coaches look better, etc.

UM has won close games, had comebacks, and had almost-miracle plays in many seasons. That's been the hallmark of the Griz, except for last season. This season was not smoke and mirrors. A few different plays against EWU and CC, and UM would have had an even better season than it did.

I understand what you are saying and somewhat agree with you but at the same time a few different plays against Cal Poly, Sac St, and South Dakota and UM would have had an even worse season than it did. That is all.

And I thought UM was better last year than their record made them look. And with JJ at qb, the record would have been more like 9-2 last year.

We only got blown out once this year and no one is making excuses for the loss just saying to people to enjoy the 10-3. Some programs would give up a LOT more than what we give up to get that record.
