The Official Pre-Game Griz vs. Appy State Pre-Game Thread

App St had 2 of the top 10 SoCon players. Actually 2 of the top 5. Don't know the source of the list.

1. Davis Tull DE, Chattanooga
2. Jerick Mckinnon QB, Georgia Southern
3. Sean Price WR, Appalachian State
4. Jacquiski Tarrt S, Samford
5. Jamal Jackson QB, Appalachian State
6. Dominique Swope RB, Georgia Southern
7. Dakota Dozier OL, Furman
8. Fabian Truss RB, Samford
9. Alvin Scioneaux LB, Wofford
10. Wes Dothard LB, Chattanooga

App State might have the best group of receivers in the country this year. Your secondary questions from last year might be answered pretty quickly.

If they're pass happy, this could be our secondary's definition....just hope we don't have to count on FG's! :(

I don't see that as a negative at all. In fact, I'm excited that they are going to get tested early. I think they'll be fine and play well. And if they do, imagine they confidence they'll have, and the trepidation every other BSC team will have, knowing the only GRIZ weakness is now gone.

That's why I think msu dropping the NDSU game was a huge mistake. They're not going to get tested, so there will be doubt in everyone's mind until they play a top opponent.

SMU isn't going to be a challenge?

A challenge to stay within 50, yes. But are the cats going to learn anything from that game?

Honestly, I'm not totally sure if they'll learn anything. However, I think the game will probably be closer than a 50pt spread. These aren't the ponies from the 70s & 80s.

There were 338 passing yards in App's Fall scrimmage, 150 yards rushing at 5 ypc.

Three App WRs were named All-Americans. Two at WR, and one as a return man.

so what's the real word on app state this year? I know they are making the transition and are not eligible for the playoffs. I also have heard that they still have a ton of talent. just how good are they?

I think their offense will be very talented, especially their WRs and QB. Which will be a huge test for our secondary. I don't think their defense is that great though. May be a high scoring game.

10 of 11 back on a top 10 offense, the best WR corp in the FCS, bar none, and a 5th year senior throwing to them.

The defense lost both starting CBs in or before the 2012 opener @ECU, starting safety moved to fill one CB slot, and the secondary play plagued us all of 2012, weak at the safety spot, and thin everywhere.

In 2013, Wofford's DC takes over the Defense. Both starting CBs are back, with a lot of depth in the secondary in general. 6'3 and 6'2 safeties, both hit like LBs. One caused the Montana kick return fumble last year.

The DL is 2-3 deep. Starting NT is back on top after preseason injury last year, and 6'5 255 lb Deuce Robinson is back at DE after playing OLB last year. He's a great pass rusher, and compliments Blair on the other side very well. I'd bet on a lot of QB pressure this year.

LB spots are looking good, but possibly lacking depth. We'll see when the depth chart comes out.

Things are looking very good in the kicking game.

I said this in another thread. This ASU game is huge! It has big implications for the rest of the season. All most too much IMO. If the Griz play well and win, including the secondary, look out Big Sky Conference. They lose big, and the D gets "lit up", it could be a confidence killer for the season. There is a lot on the line when you have a "big" test early after a difficult season.
