They couldn’t be with all that pulling on their bootstraps. I remember when if you pulled on your bootstrap three times in a day, you’d get a free ticket to Old Dornblaser.

I heard it puts hair on your palms. We are talking about the same type of bootstrap pulling, right?

Same here. You didn't mention -- but I'll bet you had them -- the chores you had to complete before starting on the fun stuff ... adding in pick-up basketball, building (probably unsafe) tree houses, etc.

An observation: Safety helmets are a good thing and I'm glad we now have them. We didn't back then, yet we survived that too. I do not recall any serious, debilitating injury for any of my friends due to the lack of that (and other) safety equipment. I myself once went down a too-steep slope and ended up doing a header over the handlebars. We all thought it was funny, except for the work to get the front wheel back to something approaching a circle. It was only looking back as an adult that I realized things could have been far different. So I'm certainly not saying we shouldn't take safety precautions, but they are not the be-all and end-all of existence. And sometimes you have to take chances to make progress.
