The 5 big things for 2017

Stitt got a little better in this regard this past year but there were still times last year that he went for two when it was really unnecessary, particularly on the next score after the previous point was missed. As for the punt comment, I am still not certain that he has changed his mind or his philosophy in this regard. Admittedly there were fewer 4th down attempts from the Griz side of the 50, but there were still instances last year.

I simply think that he is going to have to show improved decision making on certain special teams situations to give this team every chance to win.

I absolutely agree that ST's haven't been nearly as good since Bobby Hauck left.

I note with interest and envy that MSU grabbed Dillon's QB/now running back T. Anderson who is 6'3" and 215 and bound to grow. We have not had a FEATURE back since Chase and Lex were here because Stitt continues to recruit a bazillion WR's for his vaunted fly sweep and predictable bubble screens. Teams don't respect any part of our run game and, as good as he was, Nguyen was swallowed up on any inside run plays.

I agree with The #1 item that Walberg posted above. We need a power running back who can pass block. I keep waiting.

Nguyen may have been small, but he was actually an extremely good pass blocker. I agree though, it would be nice to get a big power RB like Dan Moore or Lex Hilliard again. I think Calhoun will do a good very good job for us. If our O-Line can open up some holes, Calhoun will rack up a lot of yards.

Brent mentioned drastic secondary improvement. Encouraging to see coaching staff have Sandry interview after first fall practice. He represented himself well on the field last year. He has consistently shown leadership in his play and for a young man represented the program very well. Not only a fine leader for the secondary, but for the entire program. Looking forward to his impact this year.

Wow, are you even paying attention? This staff has brought in two new transfer RBs: Josh Labrador 6'1" 215#, and Alijah Lee 5"6" 200# from WSU. Both are bruising RBs and showing well so far in practice.

on kittynation, it looks like many are placing the whole season in the hands of another true freshman at RB to make or break their season.....

It will be huge; he was a stud coming in and has developed exponentially. Maybe the best athlete on the team. Very physical.

Calhoun runs north to south and the OLine play when he is in reflects it. Nothing more difficult than trying to run block for a back who will not hit the designed hole and runs east to west (Nguyen). Just as difficult to pass block for a QB who won't step up into the pocket. Our OLine takes too much of the criticism.

4) Drastically improve on special teams. This may require a real change in coaching philosophy. Stitt needs to understand that punt is not necessarily a bad four letter word and that a win by a single extra point is just as good as a win by a 2 point conversion.
Not sure what this means.

He's drastically gone away from going for it on 4th down and punts almost every time a normal coach would.

I get maybe the missed XPs, but it's not like we go for two all the time. This seems like attacking problems that aren't actually problems. :|

I'd like to see improved special teams for sure, but this has hardly been a Stitt-specific problem. ST has sucked since Bobby left.
Nothing complex about it; Stitt does not prioritize STs. It's all about his special offense.

Thanks BW! Just like to see improvement as the year goes on! We sputtered at the end of the season like never before! Also like to see adjustments as the game goes on-on offense and defense! Last year it seemed like none were made-especially at halftime! We were predictable and the BSC made it look easy against us! There were a number of games we could of won, but we were simply out coached!
Go Griz!
Double down on this one.

Agreed! No doubt we had the talent last year, and I think even more so this year, but we were out coached both offensively and defensively many times last year. Coaching needs to improve this year - if it does, I am optimistic about a real good season!

Go Griz!

I'm not sure how you believe Stitt has failed to recruit RBs. He brought in Jeremy Calhoun in his first recruiting class and Rey Green in his second. I think we can all agree that both those guys are feature back material.

Terron Moses is a little different, but he could be a JLM type of a spark plug if he works out. We also brought in Alijah Lee and Josh Labrador.

Agreed. A north to south RB like Calhoun will definitely help the Oline out.

Biggest priority in my opinion.

Teach the team how to finish. By finish I mean keep playing hard every single down until the game is over. No plays off. This has to become a huge priority every week. A little foot to the throat attitude would be very helpful. Last year vs the Kittens early in the game I saw our players laughing, almost taunting, on the sideline after we scored so quickly. This cannot be tolerated. I love that they are excited, but nobody is going to roll over and die when they are playing the Griz. Never have never will. Get excited and get back to work.

I believe that this comes with the trust that Stitt is trying to instill in his team. Every player has to trust that every teammate is going to give it 100% all of the time. This will carry over to the offensive and defensive units trusting one another to get their part done. It should create an attitude of "don't worry we've got your back" when shit happens during a game. When shit doesn't happen it should be an ass kicking!

GO GRIZ!
