The 5 big things for 2017

Thanks BW! Just like to see improvement as the year goes on! We sputtered at the end of the season like never before! Also like to see adjustments as the game goes on-on offense and defense! Last year it seemed like none were made-especially at halftime! We were predictable and the BSC made it look easy against us! There were a number of games we could of won, but we were simply out coached!
Go Griz!

What will the suicide watch rate be if a bubble screen pass is the first play ?

Depends on the success of the play I guess. I compare it to a basketball coach yelling at a player for taking such a deep three while the ball is still in the air and then saying "great shot" after the ball goes in.

I'm late to this party. These 5 need to be excellent.

1. Left Tackle
2. Left Guard
3. Center
4. Right Guard
5. Right Tackle.

Need these guys more than ever. DOLA.

i like this from soldiergriz....reminded me of a famous lombardi quote when he was asked the proverbial keys to winning games ?....." football is a simple game, which ever team blocks and tackles the best will win". nuff said.

Cut down the 3 and out's. Better first down yardage. Capitalize on red zone possessions. This all boils down to play call and O- line execution, and quarterback play. Just my opinion.

That is exactly it. If the line plays well the offense will thrive and the defense will face much less pressure. If the line plays poorly the offense becomes a three-and-out fest and everything goes poorly from there.

All starts up front if qb has time he can go down field if not and gets a little rattled looks for quick dump off.
Also if the line makes holes for the backs it puts team in better 2nd & 3rd down yardage and moves defense up after consistent success. Remember all plays called have options, good line play and correct reads by qb allow for all options to be utilized.
I could not agree more on your red zone possession statement it seems like last 5yrs I have wondered if Griz could score with a first down inside 5 yd line.

My five are a little bit different but in the larger scheme of things they correlate well with BW's original post.

1. Win time of possession, not by 30 seconds but by 6 (or more) minutes. Not really Stitt's gig but it means a solid run game and recognition that when we have the ball our opponents don't. We only need 10 yards for a first down .. and another .....and another.
2. Assuming #1, score in the red zone at least 90 % of the time with 70% resulting in TD's. I realize that is a ambitious goal but gives value to winning time of possession.
3. On defense, reduce long drives and 3rd down conversions. This has been a sore spot for me a lot longer that Stitt's tenure. The defense plays well on 1 and 2 only to yield a big play on 3. This of course supports the goal to win the TOP.
4. Reduce the number of stupid (actually all) penalties
5. The coaching staff need to adapt during the game. If certain plays aren't working due to the defensive scheme we need to be able to change up. Make the changes during the game and not recognize during the press conference after the loss, that changes during the game should have been made. Overall the coaching staff needs to step up a few levels to achieve "deep into the playoff" status.

As far as your #3 goes I totally agree with you that it is important but I disagree that it was a problem last year. The big play has been a sore spot to be sure but not necessarily 3rd down conversions. This quote was taken from Skyline sports most recent article on Griz opening camp on the 8th.

"UM lead the Big Sky Conference in total defense (349.8 yards per game) thanks in large part to giving up 199.8 yards passing, the second-best total in the league. Montana’s 28 sacks ranked second to EWU’s 35 and UM was the only Big Sky team to give up less than 200 (186) first downs. Montana allowed opponents to convert just 27.2 percent of their third downs, also a league-leading total."

Improved Run drive Blocking, re-establish the LOS downfield, not this back-up, passive in your own backfield BS.

Improved Pass Blocking, average at least 3-4 seconds, or more would be ideal. Including getting their eyes right and picking up the disguised zone blitzes and DL stunts better.

Improved QB play, put the ball where it needs to go based on what the D is giving you and where you have the advantage personnel-wise with the match-ups. Go from a team that is KNOWN for throwing around the LOS, to team that also incorporates more mid range to long +20 yard plus passes. Get those DBs on their heels.

Improved WR play, they become more athletic and display more speed. UM faced A LOT of man-to-man coverage last season because our receivers were very cover-able. They need to become less.

Improved DB play, they don't get beat on double moves in man, and understand their responsibility in zone (the fact that they aren't supposed to guard a blade of grass but an actual opponent).

This is a very talented team. I expect big things from them. I can't wait... GO GRIZ

Simple: Under coach Stitt we have become a finesse half ass'd football team. We need to get back to fundamentally sound, smash mouth, Montana football in all three disciplines!!! We are not in D-ll but we are play like it! You can say Stitt needs to have his players before you can judge him but from what I see we have have had talented players, playing soft. Every player needs to play with a D-l attitude, all the time, regardless of who recruited him. Special teams says it all. We lose yardage in this area every game!!! I remain optimistic but realizing that every team takes on the characteristics of it's coach worries me. Coach Stitt has got to get and keep a more physical mentality at home and on the road and the second half as well as the first half of the game as well as the season. It is for four quarters all year long!!!... It isn't any one player(QB) or player group but rather a break down in fundamental physical and mental attitude. Only the coach can correct this if he has it in him to motivate players? Go Griz!!!

I think we need strong attitudes, need to ground and pound, need to pound and ground, need strong mentalities, strong physicality, and we need to recruit players from strong families, who play strong and don't play soft and who run downhill. Also DOLA. Mucho DOLA. And coaches with strong mentalities who can develop DOLA and strong D-I attitudes, and who don't shovel pass or throw bubble screens on every single play.

Winner, winner chicken dinner! They also need to give 110% on each and every play.

I've seen DOLA a bunch, what does it mean?

Dominant Offensive Line Attitude (used on eGriz way past the point of being trite and now is a tired cliche)

All of these have previously been commented on so I'll make this brief. These are in order of importance in my mind.:

1) Improved line play on both offense and defense. No matter how good your skill position players are, if the lines can't block or penetrate, it won't matter!

2) Consistent QB play. QB play can always be better but what we need is consistency at that position. This is something Brady was not. In order to do that the QB has to get comfortable with ALL of his backs and receivers, not just one or two!

3) Cut down on injuries particularly in the skill positions. Following up on number 2 above, last year when both Calhoun an KLM were out the offense simply did not execute. In my opinion Gustafson never developed confidence in what he had left and he began to audible too much.

4) Drastically improve on special teams. This may require a real change in coaching philosophy. Stitt needs to understand that punt is not necessarily a bad four letter word and that a win by a single extra point is just as good as a win by a 2 point conversion.

5) Improved Coaching. This staff has to be better at in-game adjustments, and improved reaction time. A good example is not putting a spy on the MSU QB last year! The Griz got out coached in that game badly and that should never ever happen in this program!

Not as brief as I had hoped, but there you have it.

Drive blocking pretty tough to do when you run a ROP offense. Line isn't sure if run or pass so can't go downfield. Also if teams continue to play man...the ROP is tough to work if receivers can't beat their man at the line. Safety run read leads them right into position for the crossing routes all by itself if ball pulled from the back. So also a receiver Corp play improvement will be a must.

Not sure what this means.

He's drastically gone away from going for it on 4th down and punts almost every time a normal coach would.

I get maybe the missed XPs, but it's not like we go for two all the time. This seems like attacking problems that aren't actually problems. :|

I'd like to see improved special teams for sure, but this has hardly been a Stitt-specific problem. ST has sucked since Bobby left.
