Going on 4th is one thing, running THAT play (to the short side) is another. The correct play for that circumstance is take the 3 and trust your D.
Nope, I don't agree. Alpha's post is right on. The play was set up so that the first option was that the back would be able to slip out alone into the end zone. There was also the option of JJ running or making something else happen. The play has been successful several times this season. Criticizing the play is fine, but saying the "correct" call was to kick the FG is not "correct".
No one ever said that the resulting TD was not deflating. So was the later fumble and return for TD. Was that call a bad one too? A blocked for a TD would have been deflating too, and would have been more likely than a 98 yard fumble return for TD.
As the game turned out, UM probably wouldn't have won the game with a FG at that point anyway. As Delaney and coaches felt at the time, UM needed to make its move at that time.
You obviously never played the game, and certainly never coached it. Must have spent all of your time learning how to be foul-mouthed.
