TD got robbed

Yes he deserved it, but look at it this way Griz fans: Do you really want your coach attracting more attention and accolades than he already is? Be careful what you wish for.

Just two weeks left until the annual "interview" threads! They're the real March Madness for backwater conferences.

Any good accolades for a coach is good for not just the coach, but good for the program. Montana has been a hot bed for coaches looking to prove themselves and get to the next level.

We know TD will only be with us a few years. That's what happens when you hire a upcoming coach that needs a resume builder. He was a serious contender for the cal and osu jobs were lucky to have him

Good point eagle. Geeze. I hope we can keep TD here for a few years. I know it's early, but three or four years like this, maybe with a couple signature wins, and he will be attracting attention.

On top of the reasons already mentioned for TD's COY case, he also had a starter/key contributor declared ineligible before conference play. Brian Katz from Sac is a particularly baffling choice considering their collapse and their lack of non-con accomplishments (I don't non league games should play into league award voting but I could at least understand voters rewarding EWU for what they did in November and December).

Decuire did quite well in his first year. His plan definitely fooled the preseason writers and coaches polls.

I think the only coach truly working magic this year was Nick Robinson @ Southern Utah. SUU seems to be egriz's whipping boy but what Robinson did with what he had to work with is impressive.

A bit excessive on the indignation from a few fans, perhaps? It's a safe bet that Decuire is focused more on the UNC/NAU winner than not getting the Coach of the Year award.

I'd hope TDC is most focused on the Weber game that his team plays on Thursday night. After that we'll hope he can move his focus on to the UNC/NAU winner.

What the actual fuck?

So a team that was picked to finish 3rd in one poll and 2nd in the other finishes 2nd & their coach gets COTY.

A team with a god awful non-conference strength of schedule that's picked to finish 4th in both preseason polls finishes 3rd after losing 4 of their last 7 & their coach gets a COTY.

DeCuire takes over a team that's picked to finish either 5th or 8th, with only 1 returning full time starter, who lost their starting PG to transfer, down one scholarship (Martin's) and lost a new starter to ineligibility early in the year & takes first place in the conference after winning 6 of their last 7. Oh...Griz also played the 25th toughest non conference schedule in all D1 basketball. Nope! Not good enough! :wtf:

Now I'm not saying Sac's coach and EWU's coach didn't do great jobs. They sure did... just it seems like the coach of a team that GREATLY exceeded expectations and took first place in conference would be the obvious choice for COTY.

Anyway, found the preseason polls in another thread. Only 2 teams finished 4+ places away from where they were predicted. The Griz and Weber.

Media Poll
1. Weber State (31) 424
2. Northern Arizona (4) 339
3. Eastern Washington (1) 318
4. Sacramento State 298
5. Montana 297
6. Northern Colorado 242
7. Portland State 227
8. Idaho 207
9. North Dakota 175
10. Idaho State 125
11. Montana State 104
12. Southern Utah 52

Coaches’ Poll
1. Weber State (8) 117
2. Eastern Washington (1) 100
3. Northern Arizona (2) 99
4. Sacramento State (1) 90
5. Portland State 80
6. Northern Colorado 73
7. Idaho 65
8. Montana 56
9. North Dakota 38
10. Idaho State 35
11. Montana State 24
12. Southern Utah 15

So, if I am not mistaken, this award is voted on by their peers - a coaches vote of all the BSC coaches?

There ya go! They didn't want to admit how terribly wrong they were in their pre-season coaches poll in predicting the Griz would finish in 8th place.

Either that or they are all getting tired of U of M's athletic success and couldn't stand to admit it again.

It's inconceivable!!!

Show em how wrong they are again, TDC!!!

Was wondering about that too. Anyone know if it is the coaches that vote on this or not? Would love to have seen what the voting totals were.

I was just taking note of the same thing. The coaches did pick the Griz to finish 8th.

And the press release from the league said the coaches of the year were picked by their peers.

So maybe Gallatin Griz is right, they didn't want to acknowledge how badly they had miscalculated UM's ability, or they are jealous of the school's success.

Could be they just don't like honoring a "rookie" -- someone they don't think has paid their dues. We're talking about a lot of big egos, and many probably resent a young upstart coming in and showing them up.

Could be any number of other reasons, too.....

This. They pretty much conceded this point on Sac's board. It's a share the wealth thing in the bsc.

Thought this was interesting from the bigskyconf.com article on the upcoming tournament:

--
FIRST-YEAR SUCCESS: Montana's Travis DeCuire became the third first-year Big Sky coach to lead his team to at least a share of the regular-season title since 2007. Weber State's Randy Rahe accomplished the feat in 2007. Northern Colorado's B.J. Hill led the Bears to the 2010-11 regular-season title in his first season. Both Rahe and Hill guided their teams to Big Sky postseason titles.
--

Rahe won COTY for that 2006-2007 season. Hill won COTY for the 2010-2011 season.

For the 2010-2011 season UNC was picked to finish 2nd by the media and 4th by the coaches in the preseason polls. They got some first place votes in the media poll. The previous year they finished 2nd in conference with a 12-4 record (24-7 over all). In the year he won it they finished first with a 13-3 record (21-10 overall).

For the 2006-2007 season Weber was picked to finish 6th in the coaches poll and 7th in the media poll after finishing 8th the previous year with a 4-10 conference record and 10-21 overall record. They finished Rahe's first year tied for first with NAU with an 11-5 conference record.

We will never keep good coaches until we can pay good coaches. We will never be able to pay good coaches until we leave the BSC. Sure, there will be people who say that TDC "loves Montana" or "wants to coach his alma mater," but the truth is: anyone who wouldn't take a pay raise like Tinkle or Krysko took probably shouldn't be in the position to make important decisions in the first place.

We are currently a stepping stone.

Correct, that the coaches pick coach of the year. No wonder SS and EWU collapsed at the end and Weber had a horrible year. The Big Sky coaches aren't even smart enough to vote for the obvious coach of the year. This decision is almost a stunner.

CDA, there are coaches who are the exception to this. Few could have taken better paying jobs in the power conferences. He has not, to date. Robin Selvig has been true to himself and the school. Who is to say there will never be a GRIZ Men's Basketball coach who will be here long term, and not be money driven?

With that said, I do believe Travis plans to coach at a program in a power conference. Yes, the chances are slim for the GRIZ to find a lifer at Montana.

Stunner?? It's par for the course in this rinky-dink, 9th rate conference. I wasn't surprised one bit TDC got hosed.

Awesome, the GRIZ are now in the 9th rated conference. We sure wish we were. :thumb:

Let's not overlook a "Tinkle" glow here too. I know -- it's stupid -- but Tink doing unexpectedly well after moving on may have been a factor. The thought may have been: Okay, we messed up not seeing it to start with, but the new guy benefited from the well-coached players Tink left behind. He just coasted on that. We'll wait to see how he does, more on his own.
