Yes, usually, but not aways. See links to the famous 5th down game.

Well, sometimes even scoring more points can't overcome incompetency amongst the referees.

You mean like those Coastal Carolina refs that erased a play that had already been run? Worst call I've ever seen.

Was that the game where the griz had a deep play, ran another play, the refs stopped the game and reviewed the longer play, even after the griz had already ran a play?

Yep that's the one.

We were near the goal line as I recall, the refs debacle put us out of fieldgoal range and didn't we end up with no points on that drive because of that? Did we end up losing that game?

My view is that the biggest key is the qb/receiver combo. QB has to get the ball to the right place, minimize mistakes (turnovers). Receivers have to run the right routes, make the right read decisions, and catch the ball. QB and receivers have to be on same page.

And that, folks, is how you call it if you played the game!

And talk to the coaches.
I find, in my in depth analysis, that the team that scores the most points usually wins the game.

While the team that scores the most wins,it is not always true that the offense that scores the most points always wins the game. Especially in close games, a defensive td or special teams can make the difference between a W and a L.

And you don't have had to play or coached the game to realize this.

I wouldn't call it coldcocked. We lost by one score 42-35. We got the ball down to the one yard line and were threatening to score when the refs decided to negate that play and look at the previous play. To add insult to injury they ruled that the previous play was indeed a catch marking the ball at the 17 yard line. Essentially they just ripped us off of a 16 yard play on the 1 yard line. It made a huge difference in the game.
