Stumbled upon this

Check history and you will discover that UM has losses against Montana Tech and Carroll. I too would like us to elevate however, waiting 59 years in the Big Sky possibly dooms us to FCS or below. Our AD has scheduled a non scholarship Div1, a Div2 and a recent junior college and you are against playing Rocky, Carroll, Montana Tech. I believe they all offer scholarships? I don’t understand your logic because UM will also destroy the three powerhouses Haslam has scheduled.

Dude, look at what I’ve said in the the rest of the discussion, I’m very much against playing those teams too. Go back and look at the beginning of the thread. Also, it doesnt matter that we might have played some of those NAIA teams 40 years ago or however many decades it’s been.

This is a big part of the reason I want to move up. There is nothing exciting about those opponents. Nothing at all.

...Said Washington fans about us last year...

If Washington had won that game against us though it would count toward their bowl eligibility, whereas a win over Ferris state does precisely zero good for us. It’s a high risk zero reward situation playing a very good team from D2.

I love how you shit on the Griz pummeling D2 teams (which nobody wants, anyways), but then argue for games that would be even worse.

Should the Griz play Sentinel? I’m sure it would garner a lot of “local interest”

For what it’s worth, NAIA is just a step below D2 and better then D3 so it’s not so horrible as playing Sentinel. I get you’re joking but we gotta give NAIA some credit. The best teams in that division could most likely give many of the better teams in D2 a good game and win their fair share.
Yeah, hyperbole on my part, for sure, but the average NAIA team is going to be worse than the average D2 team, and the national perception of NAIA is much lower than D2.

So best case scenario, we crush them in an absolutely boring game (IMO worse than we would a D2 school), or we don't, and we're the laughing stock of FCS.

Ideally, though, we don't have to schedule either of them.

...Although, I will mention (and I always do when these threads pop up) that the last four times we either made the semis or played for a NC, we played a D2 team in each of those years, so...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I understand the thoughts about possibly scheduling NAIA teams, but the three teams I mentioned….Carroll, Montana Tech and Rocky play a pretty good brand of football. When you consider the enthusiasm with Montana fans it would create, I say why not? Especially, when we schedule Dixie State!

A shitty Dixie state would mop the floor with all three of those teams. The difference between FCS and NAIA football is chasmic. Huge.
Dixie State won’t mop the floor with anyone. I would think all three would beat Dixie State.

Dixie State has a new name and uniforms. That doesn’t help them win football games, although they did beat Ft. Lewis. It’s unfortunate we have scheduled them.

Since apparently you have the knowledge to talk about the national perception of the NAIA, maybe you can tell us the national perception of the FCS?

Not great, but much, much higher than NAIA.

The correct answer is simply not great. You are making progress.

I'm not sure the point you're trying to make here.

You and a couple others have been throwing stones at the NAIA. My point is there isn’t much difference in the perception of the NAIA and the FCS. Especially, now that UM may never get a chance to move to a real conference and Big Guy Football. As a result of fear to make a decision over a period of 59 years, UM May one day be thankful for the opportunity to play Carroll, Rocky, Montana Tech. In the meantime, our AD is busy working on future schedules that include big football schools like Butler, Dixie State, Ferris. He should be camped at the door of the Mountain West Conference asking them what we can do to get in. No, we don’t wait for an invitation as others have said. We take the initiative and get the hell out of FCS after 59 years.

UM is simultaneously way too good for FCS where even other D1 FCS programs aren’t worth our time, and yet also close enough to NAIA (effectively 3 entire divisions below FBS, where you think we should be) that it would be totally fine for us to play the likes of MSU Northern and Rocky.

Your mind is an enigma, Spanky

Seems I remember reading about NDSU not being able to get teams to come to Fargo. This wasn't too many years ago, something about teams being shy to play the FCS sixth, seventh, or eighth time National Champions. My guess is NDSU had to bring a bigger bucket of cash when 'negotiating' a 'fair' guarantee price. The art of haggling about price, when they know they will be beaten like a rented mule.
