Stumbled upon this

Why doesn’t the AD schedule local teams like Carroll, Montana Tech, Rocky? These are good teams and playing them would generate much more fan interest than Dixie State, Ferris and Butler.

I hope you are being sarcastic.
Not really. Imagine the fan interest all over Montana. They could probably beat the teams Haslam scheduled, so why not?

Montana should NEVER EVER play an NAIA team. Period. If that were to happen then we should drop all pretense of being D1 and both Montana schools should just drop to NAIA and play frontier ball. No offense, but It’s honestly a bit troubling that some fans think this would be a good idea. I don’t think we should be playing non scholarship D1 teams, I loathe when we play D2 teams, and NAIA is basically high school ball.

Let me see if this is right. We are looking for FBS dropdowns and scheduling NAIA. You can't do both.
We need a new AD.

We are not scheduling NAIA and never will.

NAIA, Division II isn't going to help with recruiting.

You know what's funny is there's FBS teams that schedule those same FCS non-scholarship teams too. You do realize scheduling a D2 team is incredibly rare right? Tell me the last D2 team we played that wasn't CWU during the 2 game spring season.

Not going to help with a great many things. Scheduling D2 is a no win scenario IMO. A win for us does nothing to help our playoff chances or build a resume, a loss is both embarrassing and hurts our chances. The only positive way to spin a D2 is that it’s a home game and we ostensibly make money.

And as a fan of the crimson tide I also loathe when they play FCS.

I think the Bobcats may have been NAIA some of the years we played them.

I have said this in another thread about 4 months ago...we could do a home and home against jackson St.
Jackson St. has that date open that we filled with Ferris State

I understand the thoughts about possibly scheduling NAIA teams, but the three teams I mentioned….Carroll, Montana Tech and Rocky play a pretty good brand of football. When you consider the enthusiasm with Montana fans it would create, I say why not? Especially, when we schedule Dixie State!

A shitty Dixie state would mop the floor with all three of those teams. The difference between FCS and NAIA football is chasmic. Huge.

Well, I disagree, but you may be right. The fans would certainly be more supportive playing Carroll than Dixie State or the other two in my opinion.

I for one don’t want to watch the Griz beat the shit out of a Montana NAIA team by 80 points in a game that’s as far from competitive as you could realistically get.

I love how you shit on the Griz pummeling D2 teams (which nobody wants, anyways), but then argue for games that would be even worse.

Should the Griz play Sentinel? I’m sure it would garner a lot of “local interest”

I didn’t schedule the teams, the AD did. Many fans aren’t happy about it, including me. I’m only suggesting we schedule Carroll, Montana Tech and Rocky when it is necessary to schedule teams like Dixie State. Maybe we play Carroll, Rocky, Montana Tech every 3rd year instead of these teams. We talk about fan interest and the need to fill the stadium. Playing these teams will answer the need and make the AD job easier.

Dixie State is a D1 school now. The fact that you’re comparing them to a bunch of NAIA teams just shows how out of touch you are here.

Nobody is gonna want to watch the Griz go up 35-0 on Rocky in the first quarter in the hot September sun. It would be so much worse than just scheduling CWU or Western Oregon, and I don’t even really want to see that, either.

Fan interest? Nobody that I know wants to see the Griz or Cats playing frontier conference football teams. Again, NAIA is just a skip and a hop above high school ball. The skill positions and dudes in the trenches aren’t even close to D1. It could quite literally be a game where if UM wanted it could put up triple digits. Why would that generate any interest at all? It would be highly frowned upon by boosters as well, who want to see the program elevated, not playing NAIA football.

For what it’s worth, NAIA is just a step below D2 and better then D3 so it’s not so horrible as playing Sentinel. I get you’re joking but we gotta give NAIA some credit. The best teams in that division could most likely give many of the better teams in D2 a good game and win their fair share.
