Student body support

Well as a student I apologize for this problem, but the students can't take the entire blame for this. The UM bball problem started when Griz football was getting big( DD 1995) and going to a football game was the thing to do.
This has been a wierd transition for me to watch I remember when I was little, a Griz bball night was for sure the best thing to do. I mean people were crammed into that orange south endzone where in the corners you could only see about half the court. But I think most people just can't focus on or can't afford two sports?

Because students stopped showing up for a couple of years is no reason to get rid of the east side student section, I mean nearly every school in the country gives students an entire lower side. Yes students 10 years ago completely stopped going, so lets just assume our program will never get back to that level and sell those to area businesses that never show up. That is just dumb planning by our Athletic Department.
The new student section is a joke and you can harldy tell what is going on, my friends and I usually just go sit in those die hard season ticket holders seats, where we can actually watch the game. I honestly don't know how this can be fixed unless UM starts to sell the Bball program like they do with football.

I was one of those students with terrible lines of sight (behind the basket) in the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 seasons. Attended nearly every one of the conference (and some of those wintersession) games too.

The university catered to the blue haired fans in basketball, and it failed miserably. The atmosphere was lacking and the blue haired fans didn't bother showing up for the seats.

Everyone knows the boosters would rather be sitting on the upper east side (since it's close to the booze). Why not give a lower courtside section back to the students, then make the seats behind the baskets the cheap seats? Everyday fans are cheering and happy, donors are well boozed and happy.

The students need to be courtside. Part of the success of the Grizzly BB program in the 70s and 80s was caused by the student section being so vocal, and so much a part of the game. This becomes contagious for the entire fieldhouse, and the other fans get caught up in the fenzy. Ultimately, more seats are sold, and Grizzly BB becomes the place to be on a cold einter evening.

I attended a home BB game during Don Holst's last season, after being away for many years, and could not believe how quiet the place was. There was no energy.

People like excitement and energy when attending a sporting event. This energy must start with the students. Bring them back to courtside.
