Stubborn Coaching

Guess my question would be is if we have been unable to establish a consistent running game 10 games into the season and we are still having these discussions why would Delaney continue to try and find a way to get his running game going? It's just not going to happen. We may have a little success against suu just because they seem to struggle on defense but that seems more of a false sense of security than an actual running game. Sorry but it seems we need the pass to set up the run than the conventional. I kind of look at it like the guy who refuses to put his truck in 4 -wheel drive when he is sliding around.....ignorant and stubborn come to mind. Let the frustration continue I guess......

Go Griz!!
The good news: SUU is #89 (of 121) in rushing defense. They give up, on average, 4.75 yards per rushing attempt, and 193.6 yards per game. Of course, their passing defense ain't so hot either: #88, giving up 11.4 yards per completion (59% completion percentage) and 236.7 yards per game. So a run-first approach might actually work against them, but a balanced attack would be even better.

you're too low on yds/game:

I think you might be looking at Southern U, not Southern Utah :) Southern Utah is 116 out of 121 in rush defense and dead last in total defense. Here are their stats.

I do agree that we'll be able to run against Southern Utah. They are very bad. They have a bad pass defense, run defense, total defense, run offense, etc etc... The only thing they do well is throw the ball.

I'm positive we'll pick up the win and while that's great, I'm guessing it'll also result in a lot of false hope about our running game clicking finally. Then we get to play MSU. Their run defense is ranked #72. Not that great either... of course Cal Poly's is ranked #73 and they held us to 78 yards on the ground... so if we are stubborn against the Cats we could find ourselves in a big hole. They are a lot like EWU on D. An adequate run defense and absolutely horrible pass defense.

Yep. I was looking at Southern University.

Sometimes it's hard to figure out what the NCAA stat folks are going to use as a school "abbreviation" -- and I got it wrong. The SUU defense is just overall ... terrible. But then their rushing offense is really bad too. But, as you say, they throw the ball often and well (#8 in passing yards attained). All the more reason to use a balanced attack to move the ball, score, and keep it out of their offense's hands.

Oh I totally agree we need to stay balanced..but with some creativity...ALL I WANT FOR XMAS IS A GOD DAMN HALFBACK SCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps you missed the HB screen to Canada we tried to run against EWU that JJ basically threw right into the hands of an EWU lineman? But for the grace of God it could have been INT and taken back for a pick 6. Thankfully the guy dropped it.

I can't help but think we're doing SOMETHING on offense that's tipping our plays. Our receivers are RARELY open (unlike EWU & everybody else we play), plays like the HB screen get blown up, even on slant plays guys are taking punishment as soon as they catch the ball...just seems inconceivable that EVERY pass play we run we can't get a receiver open.

There was one camera shot from the end-zone during the EWU game. Wilson was in at full back and prior to the snap he looked directly to his right, just off the guard. I noticed it and thought, he must be given an ole head fake. But, the snap ensued and he ran directly where he had been looking. I don't know if he does that all of the time, but if I noticed it on TV, i'm sure a linebacker or two has picked up on it as well.

I noticed that too and thought the exact same thing. In fact, that just confirmed my conspiracy theory that we're tipping our plays somehow. Either by how the O-linemen's feet are set, by the personnel package we have in, players stealing glimpses (like Wilson did) of where they're going to be blocking/running....something has to be happening because I've never seen an entire season where it just seems like our QB is CONSTANTLY throwing to a guy who's got one or two DB's draped all over him.

This is all coaching my friends. It is the little things that make a big difference

I agree with Mick, but not this year. We can't be successful with a run first offense with our current OL.

Mick really is too stubborn for his and his team's own good. I am not a fan of any 1 style of offense or strategy. I just hate seeing teams fall short when a coach does not adjust strategy to the strengths of their team.

Another concern of mine, even if the GRIZ do make the playoffs at 8-4, when the weather gets colder, the running game becomes even more important. I doubt we have the running game to be much of a playoff threat. Let's hope we have matchups that our defense can keep us in the games.

After reading this article, I'm predicting that UM is planning to run some "misdirection" so to speak.

Tough to find a grizzer who does not like Mick, bout the same folks who don't like his offensive game approach.

We may win this weekend, but this return to the 50's offense is going nowhere sans an abrupt change of thinking from Mick and his brain trust!

Mick sounds like hes getting frustrated ....and you know the HB screen would be a great way to simulate the run game without relying on your o line to truck people.....but have we seen a HB screen yet this whole f***[*] year?????? I've been saying this all god damn year...why don't we run a screen..we have the most electric player in the BSC...you throw Van a HB screen and my god you may score every time.....if someone has evidence of us running a HB screen this year...please post the video...I can not think of a single time we've tried one.
We've tried a half dozen or so this year and last year. I'd guess at about a 10 % execution rate. Seriously, some of them were so bad you probably didn't even know the play call was some form of a screen... :egriz:
That's my reaction, too. Screens usually are used to take advantage of when the Dline is being over-aggressive and getting through the Oline to often. But when that happens all the time anyway, a screen is not very effective.

Stubborn is one thing, but that is not his biggest foible. He is just over his head being an FCS head coach. Mick is a career position coach, nothing more. He was never even promoted to a coordinator. The Peter Principle is alive and well with his regime.

Sort of like promoting a community organizer to the presidency.

This just in. First 3 plays are runs. Next two series are runs. So nine run attempts with three punts!

Guess what???? It works. Why? SUU has never been punted against, never ever planned to be punted to..... fumbled the ball three times and we grab it and run it in for three touchdowns.

Hells fire I'll watch and groan no matter what!

Look who's talking...How old are you now, Growler? I remember you claiming to be old and frail when someone threatened to beat your ass a couple of years ago. I guess you can get your son to beat people up for you. That was also one of your failed threats.

It's bad enough to read your negative bullshit about football but why don't you lay off of the personal attacks? You are in a neck and neck race with baby g as the most unliked poster on the board. Why don't you stop digging?

GFY. I don't know who you think I am, but you are wrong. And I am not running a popularity contest. I just talk football, and talk it without maroon colored glasses. If you got a problem with that, then F8ck off.

It's time for Monte to go to Band Camp.

Fiction is not your strong suite, growler.

Wrong ... but damn close.

According to the NCAA stats, SUU has received 14 punts (in 10 games), and returned them for a whopping 60 yards. That three fumbles lost, however, places them sixth (tied with a bunch) among FCS teams. Griz are #1 with only one fumble lost -- hope they can keep that up. The Griz, BTW, have averaged about 10 yards per return, with one TD.

OK OK if you guys are using actual stats I will refrain from pre calling plays for the Griz.

I feel a win coming on. No not wind, eh monte?
