From skimming the arresting officer's affidavit and looking at the latest Missoulian article:
1. Does Strong appear to be under influence of intoxicants? No.
2. The 2 other witnesses, who were with Strong, were not interviewed by the arresting officer. According to the article, the Pullman police would like to interview them. This will likely be a positive for Strong.
3. Looks like 2 people were interviewed by the arresting officer, plus another one at the party only. One said the guy put his open-handed palms up, before Strong hit him. He says Strong threw one punch, the guy went down, and Strong threw another punch when the guy was on the ground. He also says he thinks the guy got hurt when he hit the ground after first punch. Would be interesting to know if this witness was friends with the guy who got hurt, and whether he was drunk.
4. Reported as fractured skull with hematoma. The guy must not be in a coma, because the article says the hospital isn't releasing information at the guy's request.
5. A woman was also interviewed. She said the WSU guy had a guy in a headlock or chokehold in the house, 3 guys were mad at the WSU guy, and 2 of them were bleeding. This was in the house. She identified Strong. Said another guy had dreadlocks. Couldn't describe the 3d guy. The WSU guy ran from the house. Several blocks, I believe. She must have followed. She said Strong and guy with dreadlocks hit him multiple times and while on ground. Inconsistency in those 2 witnesses.
6. Strong and the other guys ran off.
7. Officer found the guy bleeding on the roadway.
8. The woman at party thought it was Strong's brother's cousin, and thought he played for Montana St. She said one of the guys had an injury to the eye and lip.
9. The officer said Strong had minor injury to right eye.
10. As reported in other places, Strong has a bit of a different story in various key parts.
11. I didn't look back at the WA statute, but I wonder if punching someone, particular a big guy one has had a skirmish with, and the guy's big injury occurs when he hits the roadway, has the requisite intent to cause serious bodily harm, or whatever the statute says. I've read about cases where someone has hit a drunk in the alley behind the bar, and the drunk gets seriously injured or dies from hitting his head on the ground. I can't recall the result, tho.
12. I wonder if Strong's 2 witnesses will recall the WSU guy with his fists clenched and looking threatening. And if their recollection will be more like Strong's.
13. The officer appears to have made the 2d degree arrest based mainly on: Strong admits that he punched the guy while standing, punched him again while getting up, and the guy got hurt bad. Now, the WSU police will have to sort through all of the additional, and conflicting, recollections.
14. Strong was booked in at 5'10", 190.
