Strength at QB

I agree this team could have an amazing year. I thought we were loaded coming into this year with the exception of good quarterbacking and leadership. I think we have arguably the best o-line, d-line, and linebacking corp in the big sky. It's been awhile since we were this good at as many positions. we shall what becomes of the secondary.

the best what? linebacking corp? thus far those guys have been more memorable for their hair than their performance.

My only concern is the lack of QB coaching. JJ benefited from coaching from Pflu and Smith, who both have a great deal of knowlege on coaching and developing QBs. I don't see that resourse this year. Kefense has some good experience coaching offenses, but I don't see very extensive experience with him coaching and developing QBs. Not sure if it's a big concern or not. I really don't know anything about Kefense other than his bio, but something I noticed that might be lacking...

+1

Argh,
Do you watch the linebackers play? We have one of the best linebacker units in the big sky, no question, especially considering how much time they spent on the field. Our run defense was not a weakness last year, BTW, despite that.

trying hard is one thing and important, but if they don't have talent, there could be a problem. This year, it appears we will have the talent.

Mad talent at linebacker last year. I felt as if they may have tried too hard as they seemed to overpursue a lot and tried to do more than their 1/11th. The exception being Coyle. Least publicized, but probably the most fundamentally sound backer we had last year.

Last year we struggled with new kids taking over the offense. We were green at QB and at wide receiver. With JJ back and inspired like he is and several talented kids backing him up, this becomes a position of strength for the team. I can't remember ever having this much experience and talent at the QB position. I've been told that JJ is as strong as ever and is throwing the ball 10 yards further than he ever has. He will be a man on a mission. With Trent and Gus behind him we should be solid in all our games at this vital position. We might end up having an epic year.
Fixed it for you.

There is certainly depth at quarterback, but I think "Gus" will total out better than ssh or tm when all is said and done. Qb will NOT be a problem this year, but I have my breath held at wr. Certainly Henderson is the guy that is HAS to be the "field stretcher" this year. If he grows exponentially like he did last year we'll be just fine. I have no idea how the kid from Indiana or Washington will be until they hit the field. The balance of young vets are possession guys in my opinion. R.b. and f.b. look to be very good also.

Henderson was undersized and blocked his ass off and took a beating

A WR that is 6' 185 is undersized? For a so called "undersized" guy, I saw him giving some beatings not taking them. Wolcott is probably a step faster then Henderson with Haynes not be too far behind. Plus, we have to use him in the return game too. Henderson was horribly under used last year in my opinion!

I would like to see him get some of those screens we threw to our TE last year. I hear we will make a few changes that will show a multi-formation pro-style spread attack. Similar to what the Saints, Patriots and Packers use. Sometimes under center, sometimes not, but a power run game will be included for short yardage and inside the 15 yard line.

I read in another thread that MD is going to a power run game??? If so, this would prove that he jas gone from practically clueless to complete moron. Our zone read was ran for big yards every game last year to scrap that all together, with JJ coming back now, makes zero sense. Dont forget that the zone read is also being ran in the NFL very successfully.

Best thing is, we get to start seeing it a week from Monday!

Whats so interesting about the TE situation?
The lack of returning experience I presume. Would be sweet if White is able to play and play anywhere near his previous potential.
Watch for the Richards kid to make some noise.
I'll believe it when I see it, and i'm a Butte guy, so i'm pulling for him, but the kid can't catch a cold.

The scrimmage I saw last year Richards caught everything in sight, and in traffic. I was impressed.

Coyle was the best LB on the field. Look at the stats. He was always around the ball, and played his position. Led the team in tackles most weeks. The other guy read too many press clippings in The Missoulian about how the D-Coordinator was gonna let him free-lance all over the field, and it hurt his play, as well as the team's play on many downs. Blame on coach Greg. He has got great talent, but the coaches should keep him in his slot, and stop trying to make him Troy Palamulo.

I believe we will see a few minimal changes with big results. Having JJ back will be great. Gus is very good & TMcK will be better now that he has JJ to learn more from & an OC team that will coach him up & wont quit on him.

Not trying to scoop anyone here but i believe we will see the Q under center more often & heres why...
a) Our depth at RB is ridiculous. Canada/Tvann/Counts will be the best trio of backs at the FCS level
b) This will allow us to have a true Play Action game that was so badly needed last year
c) It will make our red zone efficency go way up

I dont know about you but I cant stand kickers & hate seeing them on 4th & 3yds inside the 25 most of the time!

The D will be the biggest benefactors. Less time on the field, more time to adjust schemes in between series which equates into less baggin for our maniacs that love pain. DL, DEs & LBs very solid & deep. The DB battle will be fierce & this will only help our young WR corps get better as well.

Coaching continuity, better use of our potential ST game breakers (i.e. using Denard/Favors/Henderson) in better fashion. Unless Nacarrato has put on some "useable" football weight I do see him making a difference. Wolcott comes to mind as well. We all could be missing something there with him as well.

McKinley, Parker, Russell, Strom & VanAckeren will make things very interesting at least one of these guys will start. With the other 4 pushing hard to get on the field. These are 4 real "dudes" ready 2 go!

Monday cant get here soon enough. See y'all at WA-Griz over the next couple weeks!

I am an armchair quarterback (like 99.9% of egrizzer's) and I will not waste your time with my prognostications about x's/o's, schemes and personnel. I will weigh in on one facet of the game (because everyone is just dying to hear my damn opinion) - motivation. How motivated is this team for some form of redemption? They have been battered in the press and scrutinized by every opponent throughout the BSC for unfortunate off the field events. Additionally, they had coach Grandpa and a new staff that misfired at some key times last year. Don't forget the losing season - enough about that already. Soooo - what you have here is a recipe for some serious motivation! Motivation to succeed and prove themselves to all the naysayers and opponents who took glee in the Griz suffering over the last 18 months. I would really like to know what the locker room chemistry is like. I personally can't wait to see how this season shakes out and also who rises to the top as far a leaders. I believe there is no other team in the BSC and possibly the FCS - that are as motivated to succeed as the Griz are.

Thanks for going into more detail. Im already long winded but motivation is a great point to make. This group has a chip on its shoulder!

What, no Gunner Kiel transfer rumors? I'm disappointed! :x

My sources in the Notre Dame athletic department tell me that he has contacted Tate Forcier to get the low down on the Griz program. My source also told me that Tate said that he loved the program and will tell Kiel to jump on the opportunity..

But JJ will still start and Gunner will be a bench warmer....

This post should be taken with a grain of salt.. It is sarcasm.. If you actually believe this I have a bridge to sell you.
