Stitt Putting His Stamp on Montana

It was a little bit of both. In the same season we beat win-less ISU 10-9 on a last second FG, we also beat SFA 51-0 while forcing 10 turnovers.

Close, but no cigar. Down 10-9 at Holt, McKnight kicks a partially blocked FG for a 12-10 win, in front of 2,000 Griz fans, of which I was one. My memory is not superior to yours. Had to use gogriz archives. :D

And that was when Hauck nearly cost us the game by going for it from the one yard line with about 7 seconds left. The Griz got called for a PF (may have been holding, but it seems like it was a 15 yard penalty) and made the kick immensely more difficult than it should have. One of the most nervous I've ever been during a Griz game. A loss would have certainly cost the Griz the #1 seed (which they nearly blew a few weeks later vs SDSU), and likely would have cost us a seed period, so that we probably would have played App at the Rock rather than WaGriz.

I don't recall many times that Bobby Hauck's teams were rolling opponents. He did win consistently, but it was general fairly close games - much of the time the result was in question until the end.

I sometimes wonder how things like this statement get into peoples' minds....here are a few scores from the BH era (not all the wins, but certainly LOTS of "rolling" going on)....:

2003: 38-14, 41-28 (over Idaho), 42-14, 59-21, 26-0, 41-10
2004: 41-23, 42-21, 52-21, 56-7 (playoffs), 47-7 (playoffs), 34-13 (playoffs)
2005: 55-0, 32-10, 37-16, 23-0, 31-14
2006: 36-7, 59-14, 33-17, 53-21, 31-6 (playoffs), 20-3 (playoffs)
2007: 37-17, 49-0, 35-14, 52-7, 27-14, 41-20
2008: 46-10, 43-7, 41-20, 45-10, 29-12, 29-10, 35-3, 31-13 (playoffs)
2009: 38-0, 49-17, 31-10, 38-10, 33-19, 51-0 (playoffs)

And it all ended up being for naught because Bobby decided to quit throwing to Mariani.

Can't wait for NDSU. A Bison fan I know asked me last night if I could help him get tickets to the game. What a laugh.

Are the UM players buying in? I've heard some word on the street that they're not. Also some info from a real good former Colorado School of Mines player who was no fan. If players play well he takes credit if they don't it's their fault kind of stuff.

I'm as excited as most on here but have heard a little backroom grumbling.

Tell him you're selling some seats up on Mt. Sentinel. :thumb:

There will be grumbling from some with any coach. Nothing to get alarmed of, considering it is early. It is more common in the early stages, being coaches will push harder to test the players in order to trim the fat of who will or will not make the team? Kids not wanting to stay or having attitudes, make the decisions easier, or all together make their mind up to leave.

During the BSC tournament, I sat near many football players. They all had positives to say about Stitt. I am guessing since spring camp, they are expecting more, and some players are falling short, and blaming the new staff. I am sure the ones not on board will be shown the door to find another option to play football at. :thumb:

My guess is that the grumblings would be non-starters.

My guess is they mixed him up with Ron Ash. :)

I've heard good things mostly from players... I heard one complaint, but this young man was moved from his position, so that's expected. He should be feeling happy that he is still a part of the team considering some are no longer there. Like I told this young man... "you're still here and that is both fortunate and a blessing." New coaches always have disgruntled players till they gel and, or the players remember that he is the coach and they are the players. Hierarchy... the great stabilizing force behind any program.

I have talked with coach Stitt and he is so up beat, he makes me want to throw on the pads...If a player just thinks he should play because of his signing status or scholarship status, it will not wash with Coach Stitt. You earn every minute you get to play on the field. Earn it or lose it is his philosophy. This stance is hard for a lot of folks in todays world...

"Also good to hear Stitt has a presence in Texas. I'd love to see us steal a few TX recruits from the Cats".

WHY, so we could fold in Nov. like you know who.

True. I don't want the cat recruits. I'd like some OTHER recruits from down here though! :thumb:

... I wonder what kind of things Stitt will have the players do to get and show swagger?
Just win, Baby! :egriz:
I think that the matter in which we win is really going to way Stitt is trying to turn the program around. When Delaney won, it sort of felt like we were simply marginally better at skill positions than the competition. Compare that to how BH won games, we were rolling people. When Stitt talks about "punching them in the mouth" he wants to be visibly more dominant at each position then the competition. With the way Stitt ran the score up on a few teams at CSM, I think we may see HUGE blowouts when he gets the ball rolling here just to make a statement.

I don't recall many times that Bobby Hauck's teams were rolling opponents. He did win consistently, but it was general fairly close games - much of the time the result was in question until the end. I will concede that Montana definitely had a swagger during most of Hauck's era where the players knew they would win despite some less than spectacular offensive coordinating.

I enjoyed this article and I can't say enough how excited I am for Stitt to put his stamp on the program. Exciting times are ahead. Thanks for posting this article link!

I agree about Bobby Hauck. Hell, we used to think Hauck made a pack with the devil because he normally squeaked by teams that he should have rolled. There were so many games which we could have lost deep into the 4th quarter, but we ALWAYS seemed to pull them out somehow (except in the NC game where Big Game Bobby, his alter persona always emerged).

I heard that he works their asses off and doesn't tolerate slackers. Swagger doesn't come cheap. The Delaney days are over.

Like who? With so many universities down there from TCU, Baylor, Texas, SMU, Rice, all the way down to schools like SFA, or even TLU... it'd be hard to see someone scholarship worthy not being offered in Texas. You guys easily have like 12- 18 D1 schools and who knows how many D2 and D3 and NAIA. You guys should have a headache figuring out who to watch on Saturdays. Then again... Oklahoma manages to steal a ton of your kids!

School of Mines kids come in already equipped with the "work" attitude, and the intellectual ability to apply it. Schools like UM recruit from a much wider "talent" pool. Hopefully, we don't see complaints of "discrimination" down the road.

There were two kids just from my daughter's high school this year, BOTH FCS-level talent, BOTH of whom ended up at small college (as in D-II, D-III) programs. There's WAY more talent down here than can be sucked up by the relatively small number of colleges in Texas....Hell, Texas has 25 MILLION people.
