STATS FCS Poll (Oct 31) – Griz #16

The Griz did go down, but only to #16 … slightly better than I expected. As I rather guessed, the pollsters kept Idaho just above the Griz

Wow! Way overrated at 16. I was thinking others receiving votes.

Gris are a top 25 team unfortunately, without JMU and SHSU those are two spots that they gain. Even if they finish 7-4. The FCS isn’t as watered down as the 2000’s but it’s trending that direction.

I shouldn’t say unfortunately, it’s good to have both Montana schools ranked, good for the brawl, good for the winning team to help with seeding. Good for the BSC. But it is fun to see them lose. This board can be Halloween year round.

Interesting observations (upon reflection).

First, I think the Griz are ranked pretty close to where they belong, although perhaps a couple spots too high. They should probably be down among the other three-loss teams, like Elon, North Dakota, and Rhode Island. Elon lost to an FBS opponent (Vanderbilt, not exactly a powerhouse), and at two ranked FCS teams, New Hampshire (#17 now) and Rhode Island (#23). North Dakota’s losses were to weak FBS Nebraska, Southern Illinois (ranked then, not now), and South Dakota State (#1 now). Rhode Island lost to a pretty good Pittsburgh team, and to Delaware (now #18) and William & Mary (now #8). That’s pretty comparable, IMO, to UM losses at Sac State (#2), Weber (#5), and Idaho (now #15).

FWIW: Don’t give the pollsters too much credit for placing Idaho just ahead of the Griz. One of the surprises in this poll was how far they jumped Furman, after its win over Chattanooga. They dropped Chatty exactly what I expected … yet, despite a big jump, they did not move Furman ahead of the Mocs.

Same thing with Elon over Delaware. Elon was rewarded nicely, moving from unranked to #19, close to what I guessed. Then the pollsters hammered Delaware down a bit more than I expected. Yet, despite the upset, the Phoenix are still one spot behind the Blue Hens.

Finally, what’s up with ranking Princeton? The Ivies give an emphatic middle finger to most of the FCS, aside from a tiny clique of OOC opponents. Same goes for Jackson State. The SWAC and the MEAC prefer the big money they can suck in from the Celebration Bowl, and you certainly can’t fault them for that. But neither conference is competitive outside their own tight HBCU haven, even after you delete all the FBS money-game losses. Jackson State has that cool-looking undefeated record, but their SOS is a pitiful #245. They literally have not played anybody worth mentioning.

I agree with you heavily on Jackson state. They are not top 25 material. They benefit from Deion sanders and a pitiful schedule. It sucks they won’t get to see the light in the FCS playoffs. But good for them for having college game day.
