Statement from Royce Engstrom

I like it. I think the President might be better than most of us have given him credit. He is and will remain a strong Griz supporter.

Could you imagine taking over a new job and walking into the football confusion he has faced? I think he and the university are doing a good job considering the amount of experience they hold.

One of the issues lots of fans do not understand is that shortly before our football "problems" all popped up is that a number of university staff members, who work closely with the football program, retired. With that being said, some of the internal structure for recruiting, locating, placing, directing, was in limbo. The retirees would be hard to replace. They all helped Griz players stay on top of things.

If Mick and the team do well this season, there will be lots of folks who will be given credit. But if the ship sails with strength, belief, and success then we may all have to stand back and truly appreciate Mick/staff and all the new guys who took us through some pretty choppy waters.

I am thinking we might be in for a pretty great season!

Wrong....fuckstick created the choppy waters by firing two men who didn't need firing. The legal situation would have played itself out. Royce is a flaming douche...and ptgrizzly is a grade A fuck chop...

Too little, too late. Royce had the opportunity to stand up for HIS student athletes yesterday when Williams had his drivel printed in the most circulated newspaper in the country, yet he stood back and did nothing while allowing the reputation of the THE University of Montana to be damaged forever by the highly publicized comments of an agenda driven, past his prime, Regent and his narrow minded views of the football team. No where did he call out Williams for his inexcusable and stereotypical comments. Too afraid to challenge the all powerful Pat on account we might see who is behind the curtain? Much like the statements made late last night by members of the BOR, his comments commending student athletes are nothing more than reactive damage control.

+2. Yes, too little too late, but is it even sincere?

Engstrom likes to issue statements.

Waded Cruzado was actually at the Cat's basketball game Thursday night.

Shhhhh! Don't tell anyone. But Royce was at Dahlberg Thursday as well (as he is for every home game when he's in town). In fact he waited court side for 15 minutes to congratulate Wayne when he came back on the floor to do the radio show.

Sorry if that destroys your perception of Evil Royce.

Well, given Engstrom's history, does that mean Wayne is out in a week or two, another excellent coach at the top of his career? :o

Haters gonna hate. No amount of common sense will ever change that, I guess.

someone thinks very highly of themselves and their opinion.....

Whatever. I just prefer accuracy to inaccuracy. If one is going to suggest that Engstrom wasn't at the BB game, it would probably stand to reason that you had a clue about whether he was or wasn't.

Engstrom thinks that supporting athletics equals attending some games in person, and supporting an academic center over other needed improvements, including weight and locker rooms. Where's the dollar-for-dollar support for new facilities that he said he would provide as he was becoming president? Anyone who contemplates shutting down the football program for a year, and who fires both the AD and football coach as he did, doesn't support athletics and doesn't understand what supporting athletics is. If you were close enough to the program to know many coaches, athletic dept personnel and athletes think of Engstrom, you wouldn't be an apologist for him.

FWIW, I'm extremely close to all of those, with the exception of the athletes. And I'm no apologist. I,just think if you're goning to complain, accuracy is important.

It's fine if you don't like him. Many do. Guess that probably comes with the job.

What I find regrettable is that Mick Delaney and/or Kent Haslam have not stepped forward to support the players. I know Engstrom is the mouthpiece but if I were the head coach or AD I would certainly want to weigh in on this. Maybe they are afraid of being fired if they say anything? Just curious.

Engstrom firing O'Day and Pflugrad at the same time, in the same room can never be justified and treatment these two individuals didn't deserve. Engstrom is a jackass and needs to go back to South Dakota.

You are clearly not close enough to coaches or athletic department personnel (or their close friends), because they apparently haven't told you what they think. If you're going to be support Engstrom, accuracy is important.

Perhaps those 15 minutes would have been better used releasing a statement on the same day Williams was running mouth stereotyping University of Montana football players (past and present). I can't imagine any president letting 24 hours go by before releasing a response.

Maybe they wanted to give williams plenty of time to leave the country before taking any action. ;)
