Spring Practices

No one on this board corrects me more than KEM. However, it doesn't bother me a bit. The man played for the Griz and if he is who I believe him to be, hasn't missed a Griz game in many years! He supports this team as much if not more than many others. I am not privy to his monetary support...I appreciate his comments and knowledge of the game! And to top it off, if he is who I believe he is, has the nicest wife anyone would want to meet!
Go Griz!

i'm not going to try to change your view, i'll just disagree with it, and say that statements like 'we couldn't block sidbury' don't exactly ring out as great football knowledge/analysis to me. the folks who really talk football are coach-24 and the like - they don't just point out the obvious that we all can see. but whatever, sorry to derail the thread.

I believe that was ME who pointed out Sidbury (couldn’t remember his name)….so thanks for that.

i will let it go.....

If argh? had his way, Engstrom would still be prez, Stitt at head coach, BH would have been stoned to death in the Oval years ago, and K-pop would be blaring in the Championship Center.

You called Kem a poser and a hypocrite. He is neither. He is often blunt but so what?

I want hear more about spring practice and Johnson. Get with it.

Johnson to Flowers, 65 yard fly pattern, dead on accurate, TD! Seriously, a perfect pass, caught in full stride. He and Britt both throw very nice passes.

Gracias.

I caught a little bit of yesterdays. Honestly - based on the discussion here, the tough thing for reporting regular practice updates is that for a little while practices have been closed because coaches did not like information such as starting groups and injuries being posted on message boards so they locked down practices somewhat. I’ve enjoyed being able to make it to a handful just to see how the team looks.

From my observation yesterday it definitely seemed like a pretty energetic and spirited practice. It seems to me like this massive group of underclassmen is getting a lot of work to determine who might be a reliable contributor for the next season versus who is still progressing along and needs more time before they break through the 2 deep.

Just like you probably saw from the football Twitter account, it’s good to see guys like Marcus Knight back out there.

The one thing about Hauck spring camps is that there is not a whole lot of live action the fans would really enjoy. It’s a whole lot of individual drills that are usually broken down to position groups. Was there for 90 minutes and near half of what I saw was drills that seemed focused on special teams work. Not that that’s a bad thing - it’s just tough for a fan to see how new starters look, etc.

Going to try to catch a few more next week as well.

Hey Brint, did you attend the scrimmage yesterday? Curious what you thought. I heard some good things, but it’s always nice getting your take.

I was a little late, didn't know it was a scrimmage and starting an hour before the original planned time.

Both Johnson and Brown lead early TD drives that I missed. Defense really buckled down after that. I was hoping to see more from Britt in a "live" scrimmage as he'd been tearing it up during practices, but, not the case. Johnson did have a few misses in a short-field drive that would've been sure fire TDs. Ford (I think) had a pick on a fade route.

Like the practices I've seen, we've got a lot of younger guys getting a bulk of meaningful reps with a handful of expected starters not taking part in the full contact drills. Lots of mixing and matching in the defensive front and on the O-line. Running game wasn't ripping off big runs at all, mostly Childs/Harris getting reps as I think they're keeping Marcus and Nick out of most contact drills.

The defense continues to impress me, even with a lot of expected starters watching from the sideline. Guys like Matthews, Flink, Hill, Simmons, Croy, Tirrell, & Todd all with some plays that grabbed my attention, either that day or previously. lots of our RS Frosh/Sophomores are rotating in to play with the 1st or 2nd string units and are making the most of it. I think that once again our depth is going to be a big strength for this team.

Edit: meant to add, Carver Gilman (kicker) I think was 3-3 or 2-2 on kicks. Pretty effortless shots as well, nothing too long of an attempt nailed them all. He's a tall kid at 6-4, kind of odd to see such a tall kicker, haha.

Thank you, Brint. Pretty much what I had heard as well. I was told the kicker was Camden Capser who went 3/3 on PATs and 2/2 on field goals. Carver Gilman went 0/1 on Pats and 1/1 on field goals. Capser is listed as 6'2" and was told he is in the 1 position at kicker.

No Spring Camp practice this week as its spring break. They don't come back until Monday.

Ooof! You have a way with words, very descriptive. What came to mind was the scene from "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" with claws on a chalkboard, by Herbert Lom. Left me with the same left eye twitch.

Think there was also a notable early season win last year as well! Funny how some don’t want to acknowledge how the program has grown after a decade of mediocrity.

The program is in fantastic shape right now. I don't get the negativity. We beat a Pac 12 team and ended the season destroying both our conference rivals before losing to a JMU team that was the second best team in FCS. I'm not being snarky towards the cats, I just firmly believe it. I'm most excited by the fact we might actually have QB depth which has plagued us for a long time. I'm as curious as anyone how our oline will come together, but along with QB, we might have one of the better RB rooms in the FCS when all is said and done, which is only remarkable considering last year. My hats off to Xavier for taking punishment as a stable back as a true freshman. Super talented. Excited to see his progression with Knight and crew. Defense is loaded.

THIS.
Pretty much reading this sums up my need to visit eGriz again for a few months because this sure seems how the programs stands as of now. :-)

We’ll need all the QB depth we can get if we’re starting a 240 lb tackle. We’ll be down to Huot at some point, in all likelihood.

You must know something I don't. Who is this possible 240 lb starting tackle? QB depth is important because qbs can get injured just like any other player. It seems to me most of our QB injuries in the last 6-7 years have been while running the ball, not sitting in the pocket. We dipped into our 3rd string QB last year for performance reasons or mop up.

And they’re not sitting in the pocket because it’s collapsing, many times….

Sorry, I’m going to stop. My negativity is killing ME.

Same kid won’t be 240 come fall. Everyone always complains about oline footwork and no mobility. Maybe someone 280 or 290 who can move would be an improvement. Also not accounting for another transfer or two. Going to be fine this year. Running back, QB tight end and receivers are stacked. Be surprised if there isn’t another drop down for oline.

I guess if you define “fine” as where we were last year then you’d be right. I don’t define it that way, but to each his own.
