SPRING CAMP: Position Battles on Offense

Remember how dominating JJ was in the spring scrimmage? Especially the JJ to Cam Warren connection. Now yes, the secondary was not great, but JJ was reading fast and getting the ball out quick. He was playing at that level while having the accusations hanging over his head. I'm excited to see how we plays without that stuff floating around his head and what I can only imagine is some extreme motivation.

He is also undeniably stronger with another year of lifting and maturing.

Thanks Brint
I for one hope that Jordy comes back and can compete, if he does I like our chances better with him at the controls then the other QB's provided he can put all of this past year behind him. My concern is that he was brought here for the purpose of running a system that is no longer coached here with the departure of RP.
It is going to be a tough battle in that position if Jordy does come back, if not I look for Shay to be the one that has it to loose. I don't care what system we run, we just need to improve overall team speed. In the past playoff games and title games we have lost the other teams just seam to be so much quicker early on. Our conditioning did seem to help in the second half but by then we were playing catchup and to many games were just to far out of reach to cross the finish line.

um...no. IF JJ comes back he will win the position outright...period. Comparing SSH to Jordy is well...idiotic, at best. Not trying to pick a fight, honestly. But you CANNOT compare the two.

If Jordy hadn't initially been charged, Shay would never have seen the field. Bless Shay's heart, but he wouldn't start at Carroll.

Thanks BW. Any word on if the coaches will be going through headset drills this spring? Sure couldn't hurt.

Just sayin'

My two cents: where McKinney fell short in terms of his accuracy last year had more to do with the fact that a young kid was thrown into the starting position amidst a load of turmoil, bad coaching, and uncertainty regarding the program's future. He was, what, 19? He's gonna be a one of a kind talent when he finds his groove. Recall jj when he first took snaps with our program. Not pretty, but took his offseason, learned to read the field better, gained a great deal of cohesion with the unit and his field vision was dynamite after having the time to work on things that he fell short with. I honestly think we will see the same in McKinney as he grows up a bit and settles his nerves, puts on some mass, improves his arm strength and accuracy with some good offseason reps and comes back more prepared than he ever could have been as a freshman. Probably not the most popular opinion on the board, but entertaining SSH as the presumptive starter is a garbage decision and I think McKinney really could be the future of the program. That being said, should JJ make the decision to return, McKinney could learn a great deal under a guy like him. But I don't think he will, in all honesty, so we should move forward with that in mind. This program needs to stop switching horses midstream as we seem to have had a propensity to do so (in one way or another) so many times in the last handful of years. Anyway, those are my thoughts on the qb situation. Anybody know where breczyk went?

This single handedly is killing the program. Unfortunately, I fear the only consistency we may see is RE continuing to keep his head up his ass. I pray he learns to stay out of the way and concentrate on the academic components of the U. Let Haslam do his job and prove he is the right guy to lead into the future. Just stay out of the way Rolls.

Year after year, you hear guys talking about speed on a team.. Is there gonna be a guy this year that will be able to flat out run? Gamebreaker material??

The younger Ngyuen is no more a lead blocker than his older brother. He's listed on scout @ 5'7 187. It would be safe to say he's probably shorter & lighter than what scout is listing. Use a TE or an extra OL in short yardage must have situations. Ngyuen is probably a redshirt candidate from what I feel at the moment!

After overhearing McKinney say, "I don't think Im ever going to start here again," about a month ago, I lost all faith in him. You need to be confident at that position and I don't think he has that. Once JJ's graduated, I hope he proves me wrong, otherwise Brady or Makena are going to make sure his statement is true.

The system has only been tweaked from RP's offense. I think JJ will be fine in that offense. And having been at the last NC game the Griz participated in (Villanova), I can assure you team speed was not the issue. It came down to two people: Our OC and their Wildcat guy (Czrzrzrzr)...

I agree 100% The thought of SSH starting depresses me. He really doesn't belong at this level, and I think benching McKinney was a big mistake last year. Only the delusioned thought the Griz could pull out a decent season last, and the delusioned put in an inferior qb. McKinney certainly had one horrible game, but I think had they stuck with him, we would have had a winning season and definitely beaten the cats.

Shay Smithwick-Hann - I've read and seen more reports where the players talk about how smart of a player Shay is. Coach Delaney has stated that Shay will enter spring ball as the starter. This would lend hand to what we're hearing that the team will move to more of a power running team and mix in some pistol offense. Shay throws a good deep ball, knows the WRs well, and has been here a while. There's concerns of course with his arm strength and speed. He's not much of a running option at this level.

If Shay wins this position in the spring I would be very surprised. I just did not see anything that made me believe he is a D1 QB last year.

Wow. This tells me his confidence is shot, done, kaput. I am shocked honestly. I expect anyone at this level to nut up when the chips are down. If what you posted is true (I have no reason to doubt you) then he is done and the race is now down to three QB's. Gustafson leaves me scratching my head though. Drop back passer for sure - not a runner. Pray to God JJ returns or we go in a completely different direction with our offense. This is going to be interesting.

Ha, no it sure couldn't. That's one dynamic that'll be interesting to watch. Kfense working with TEs, Gragg working with OL AND one of the two of them handling playcalling as well.

How can there be questions over his arm strength, yet he throws a good deep ball?

Tough to totally say.

I think at WR Ellis Henderson and a healthy Sean Haynes are both game-breakers. Also Chase Naccarato was one of the fastest kids on the track in all of Washington when in high school. Those three could be game-breakers. Beyond them though, Canada has a good burst, we know that, Counts is much quicker than his size lets on the believe. I'm not sure on TraVon, will have to see.
