Some disquiet on the defense. What would you do?

Anyone is welcome to attend the Tuesday presser, and anyone can watch it on gogriz.com. You're more than welcome to see if Delaney was misquoted. Bottom line, he's not making excuses by saying the other team has good players. Anyone who thinks he is has an agenda, and are also probably the people that think Montana has always had better players than everybody else, which is absurd and completely untrue.

Hav,

I agree with your posts 90% of the time, and I personally like Mick as well.

That said, these “we played one of the best in FCS” comments week in and week out is getting a little stale. It’s fine to tip your cap to worthy competitors, but have a little fire in the belly.

They are getting lit up and embarrassed every week. Telling everyone you just played superman is not the response, in my opinion.

Something different. Opposing QBs setting records against us is becoming too common. So.
Rush more than four. Have ends forget about sack totals and watch their rush angles so they keep the QB contained. Rush with their hands up. When blitzing remember the object is to get to the QB, not play pushey-shovey with blocker. Backs shouldn't be ten yards off the ball on 3rd and five. Press the receivers and keep them on the line. Eliminate LB vs WR match ups. When ahead continue doing what got you the lead don't change. (sometime in the 80's every high school, college, and pro coach paid a hundred and fifty bucks for a clinic to be told no QB can run 5 or 6 plays and cover 80 yards in less than two minutes--so just rush 3, drop the other 8 back 15 to 30 yards in a soft zone and you'll be a successful coach). Once in a while, choose an item from above and just say, "What the Hell let's go crazy; maybe we can hold somebody to less than 500 yards". Remember Paulson was relieved of DC duties. Breske is making $425,000. Be like Mike.

Paulson was relieved of his duties at UNLV, not at Montana and he wouldn't have been either, like it or not. Ty own't be fired either, like it or not.

I know this isn't what you are asking, but it is great to hear that Gregorak is taking the blame. Too often coaches sit in their offices and blame the kids for all of the mistakes which does nothing except divide team unity. Ty is doing exactly what he needs to at this point, telling the kids its my fault and we will work on it together because we all know the talent is here to do better. Everyone should be thankful that we have a coach like this regardless if you agree with how his unit if performing.

not to say that all this is not important....but i already stated in the ewu thread that he said the same thing after the eagles game.....you be the judge if these words and sentiments made a difference in the sac state game and if a week of hard work and drills etc paid dividends of more than :twocents:

I would call O'Brien first.

Phenecie was demoted too. Its amazing how things change. Not really in Phens case.

Has any position coach been fired or demoted since Glenn hammered Ron Richards (in the first game of the season?) That Kade Rannings kid doesnt count.

I like that Coach Ty says the defense is ticked off, they damn well should be, they are in position to make plays alot and they just don't make the plays. Kantangotta'a is famous for taking on blockers and then getting tangled up with the blocker and having the play go right past him. If Dennard is in there, they throw right at him. But the Griz have to play a nickel on third downs, and get some more speed on the field, along with maybe blitzing the nickel back and corners at times, that is what Breske used to do. Give the QB something else to look at, maybe confuse him at times. Like someone else has said on here, if we are going to give up so many yards anyway, we might as well take risks and blitz on every down.

I believe pressure on QB's like VA and Saffron is essential. Rushing 4 always left lanes for them to run out of especially with our LB's dropping off in coverage. Also how many times did Saffron bootleg with nobody spying on him or keeping contain. We finally caught on in the OT series and stopped him. We seem to have a soft zone coverage going most of the time. I think pressure with blitzes would be in order despite the possibility of getting beat. We are getting beat in the secondary about as bad as you can anyway. Some of these ideas may seem conflicting but at least a little more variation would be in order. We were consistent in rushing the four down lineman.

We could recruit Cal Poly's DB's they provided some of the best one on one coverage I've seen. Our receivers always had someone on their back as the rest of their team denied our run game. They gambled on stopping our run and were excellent defensively until our last drive when they went into a prevent, which seems like what we are in all the time. We react to what the other team is doing rather than pressure them and make them react to us on defense. Gamble it can't be worse than career games given up to opposing QB's.

Hmmmmm....so if Montana hasn't always had better players, then what in the Sam Hill could be the difference....interesting.

Also, as much grief as Ty takes, and as much as he has to learn...I'd much rather see him stay and the head ball coach go than vica versa...at least Ty has a future and seems to hold himself accountable.

Stubby, so you're saying up until recently, Montana ALWAYS had a better player than every other team in the Big Sky at every single position?

No, I'm asking you that because you believe that Montana hasn't always had the best athletes, what has changed? It seems fairly obvious to me...I was just seeing what you thought.

And for the record...I have always been amazed at our record against nau and the scats...always thought they have had really good athletes. But, there was one position(not on the field) that the griz were always better, and it is not the case in the last season and a half.

Can't disagree completely, but then again, I just try not to be too critical of coaching BECAUSE, I'm not a football coach and If I was I probably wouldn't be a very good one. Another reason why I try not to be too critical of coaching is because I am a head coach in a different sport, so I feel like I need to back coaching in general unless they really do something you can't back. But that's just me. Everyone else is entitled to their opinions about the coaching.

I have spoken with Ty on occasion and I can say that everything Griz fans like about the guy is genuine. Ty is a high energy guy who cares a lot for his players and has a lot of passion, or "fire in the belly" as egrizzers called it when they were excited about his promotion in early 2012.
But being excited, passionate or pissed off isn't enough. Moving up to D coordinator is a huge step on any team, but it's bigger still when the head coach is not a former defensive coordinator.
At the end of last year with the Griz D ranked 122nd in FCS, I started looking through the bios of the DCs for the top 50 FCS defenses. Most of the coordinators for those teams had DC experience at another program. A little more than a dozen were promoted within the program from a position coach and in every case the coach doing the promoting was a former DC. Ty doesn't have that advantage.
I am also amazed that a first time coordinator manages the game from the sideline. Bobby Hauck used to say he wasn't the right person to ask about game particulars because he was on the sideline and couldn't see the field real well. Hauck was telling the truth. Most fans have a better vantage point than a coach on the sideline. A new coordinator should have the best view possible. He shouldn't be getting his best look of the game on film a day after it's over.
That's my two bits. Flame away Griz fans.

Some of you posters are comical. I see many of you calling for nickel packages and saying we don't run it. what games have you been watching. I guarantee that you are not paying close enough attention to the D to even realize what D personel is in. If you were you would have noticed that the D was in a nickel package at least a dozen times or more in each of the last two games.

Another way it seems they are getting more speed on the field is bringing in a fourth backer for a d lineman. This has happened probably about 10 times in each of the last two games.

My god people. If you are gonna play coach and call for something to be done at least have the awareness to realize if it is already being done.

Timely topic--we just disscussed this over lunch at The Bin in downtown Billings. I told my friend, an avid Griz fan, that we can't keep giving up 400 + yards a game and expect to win and that 9 games into the season, our D should be playing better than it is. Our offense shouldn't have to score 50 + points a game for us to win !!!

I put these suggestions in Brint's post about the statistical improvement year over year of our defense.

1. Rotate Bienemann, Takai, Ginn, and Kidder plus Holmes, Wagenmann, and Crittenden to keep them fresh and to get more push from our front 4. While I believe in well-timed blitzes, if we have to routinely send 5-7 to put pressure on the opposing QB, we are going to get burned !!! We need more sacks, pressures, and pass knock-downs from our front 4 !!!

2. Pull a LB and go to the nickel with another DB and our best, fastest cover safety if the opponent empties his backfield and goes with 4-5 wideouts. I saw from the North End Zone JP's flowing mane as he tried in vain to chase down Eastern's WR during the Eastern game--covering a WR with a LB = a big play or score normally for the opposing team.

3. Our O can help our D by a balanced attack featuring about an even split between the run and pass so that our D doesn't get chewed up and worn down because they are on the field so long. To me, a 5-9 minute drive that results in a score, especially a TD, is great for the offense AND the defense !!! We have this O line that averages 6-6, 315 or something like that--let's use them and expect them to open up holes for our backs .

1. If you watch closely you will see that the rotation you call for is already in place. Crittenden rotates every three plays for Tyrone or Wags. Also, Kidder gets damn near as many reps as the starters. Ginn and Rhem also get a bunch of reps.

2. See my other post on nickel packages.

3. I agree

Personally, I'd like to see our d-backs actually come up and jam a wr on the line of scrimmage. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to play 10 yards back when it's 3rd and 5.

Why is our "D" always a 400 level science class... It's ALL about TACKLING. I haven't seen guys incredibly out of position all year? What is tackling?? It's busting your a$$...meaning it's just like anything else in life, put out the EFFORT and you reap the RESULTS. Tackling is WORK. The talent is close enough, so if you DON'T bust a nut on that play you may look SILLY. Think London Fletcher...not imposing...not overly gifted on NFL standards.( and he's been knocking people down longer than anyone) A human tackling machine...why? A maximum effort on every play. Maybe one of you stat gurus can find out our Y.A.C. (yards after the catch) on defense?? It probably will tell us something about effort. :twocents: :egriz: P.S. some coaches can get the maximum effort out of their players...and some can't.

That's probably a healthy attitude towards that situation. Some days I try that, some days I don't. Depends on the conversation. Mick does not have an easy job, I will give him that. It can't be easy to coach here...pressure cooker. But, I wouldn't want that to change, either.
