The pass D has been bad the last two years but this defense has not been as terrible as people suggest. The stats point to that. I want it to be better but I think Ty is improving and his best years as a DC are in front of him.

I mean, jeez, everything you post would have us think that our players and coaches should all be in the NFL already. We had two LBs who will probably play in the NFL, and one of the better D-lines in FCS football, yet teams always found a way to run on us. Pretty obvious that is was not the lack of talent. Duh, then it must be the coaching, right? Please tell us what you see from Gregorak that makes you think he is improving? I just wish we had Breske back.

In the conference:

Scoring defense: 4th best (season) / 5th best (conference)
Total defense: 5th best (season) / 6th best (conference)
Rush defense: 4th best (season) / 3rd best (conference)

It's not the best but it's up there.

Improvements from Gregorak looking at 2012 to 2013:

Opponent scoring went from 26.7 per game to 22.9 per game.
Pass yards allowed went from 288.4 per game to 237.7 per game.
Interceptions went from 12 to 16
Forced fumbles went from 17 to 22 and fumble recoveries went from 10 to 16
Red zone scores the D allowed went from 89% to 71%
Red zone TDs the D allowed went from 59% to 54%

Other things receded, rush defense, 3rd down defense being the biggies.

I don't think Ty has done a great job yet but I see improvements and better things ahead. This spring I saw a much more aggressive defense that was attacking and blitzing from all angles - I saw a lot more of what we once had in Breske's scheme.

I hope you are right, because Gregorak has been a lot closer to Paulson than Breske since becoming DC. I loved him as LB coach, jury is still out as a DC. I love an attacking aggressive D but know it also takes the right personnel to do that.

That's the key. We haven't had true CB's on this roster for a while. Dennard is a converted WR. Now McKinney as a convereted QB to S (a position he's NEVER played, by the way)...I can't WAIT to see McKinley and Parker and Nelson together in the backfield. TRUE corners, RECRUITED as corners... :thumb:

UM was 1.3 points per game from being 1st in the conference in scoring D. Had UM not given up 2 of those 3 TD's to CC at the end of the half, UM would have been 1st in scoring D in the conference, and probably advanced to the next round of the playoffs. 32.7 yards per game from being 1st on Total Defense in the conference.

1st in interceptions. 2d in sacks, 4 behind EWU, which played 2 more games. 1st in red zone defense. 1st in turnover margin. 1st in turnovers gained.

You need to look at the numbers, not just at the conference rankings.

UM was not very good in 3d down defense and pass defense was 8th.

The defense was actually quite good, with some notable exceptions--either games or parts of games. Some of you act like the defense was bad, and it was not.

Good defenses give up 100-110 points in a season not in 3 games.

Montana was 28th in the the nation in scoring defense last year. 3.4 points away from top 10.

NDSU gave up 169 points last year. So does that mean you don't think NDSU had a good defense. 4 teams gave up fewer than 200 points last year.

Less than 10 playoff teams had a scoring defense better than UM's last year.

Actually, 127 not 126 during the reason season, but who's counting.

Since you're cherry-picking and modifying the numbers, why don't you subtract the 23 points given up in the Northern Iowa game and 26 given up in the Missouri St game too. It was obviously uncharacteristic of NDSU to give up so many points, and those games must not be representative of the world-class quality of the NDSU defense, even tho both games were in Fargo. Backing out those 2 additional games too, would give a truer picture of the quality of the NDSU defense.

I still count those games, but I back out the bad quarters, like the end of the first half against CC. Excluding the last 6:06 of the 2d quarter, UM won that game 35-21. Had UM worn proper attire to keep our players warm, we would have won 50-7.
