So who lands on an nfl roster?

Good defenses don't give up 42 at home to a mid-major in December :|

...or give up 6 passing TDs in a game. I mean, we are in FCS. It's not like we're lining up against programs with our resources every week.

I'm not one to call for coaches' heads, or to rag on our team too much, but I don't see how anyone can deny this.

I get so tired of posters trying to cherry pick stats to prove their point. If anyone who knows jack sh*t about the game of football thinks that UM had a solid run-stopping defense last year, then they probably should take up watching another sport. Trying to say that we were 20th in the nation as proof that we were good doesn't cut it for me. Are any of you satisfied being 20th in the nation in anything? Have we dumbed down our program so much that this is the new standard of excellence? Open you eyes during games, and watch the opposing coaches make adjustments in their play calling to school Gregorak time and again, while he has no answers.

Uhh am I satisfied with 20th in the nation in run defense? YES, absolutely...

Here is a hint: You don't have to be top 5 in one stat to be a top 5 defense...

Hypothetically if a team is a power house and is up 20 points in the first quarter due to an incredible offense...the other team would pass the ball a ton and thus the first team would have an incredible run defense stat that actually doesn't reflect at all what their run defense is really like...I am not saying that this occurred with our team but saying we have the 20th ranked rush defense so we must be 20th best at stopping the run is simply too narrow minded and for someone who claims that he is so informed about the game should probably understand this... I would hope.

Also really depends on the teams you play... you think everyone who plays Georgia Tech just has the best pass defense in the world?

Our rush defense was good last year but simply not as good as our players would suggest and I think it's a simple answer. It's not scheme, it's not coaching, it's the fucking secondary that has been horrible for the past 2 years. It's super easy to run on a team when your linebackers have to drop back SO FAR every play because your corners/safeties suck so much...

It is the scheme... Its the same way Paulson ran his defense when he was here and we had plenty of talent back in the secondary in his days.

You don't want to blame the coaches, yet you blame the players? Weak. Players do not get fired, coaches do.

If you are happy with the 20th ranked run defense, with the superior talent we had at D-line and LB last year, then I have little hope for you. Saying that the LBs were forced to play DB is just wrong. Their drops were normal.

You think it's totally ok to blame the coaches who are not out there actually playing but not to put any blame at all on the players who actually ARE playing the game? Yah...no logic flaw there. And you can't fire players, you can cut them. Please...use your brain.

LOL their drops were normal? Seriously? Did you watch the games? To put stats into this debate. Our 3 LB's(Coyle, Tripp, JP) got a total of 6 interceptions throughout the season.

Florida State's LB's, who played 1 more game than us and also belonged to the best intercepting team in the country, got a total of 5.

I mean...run through the game tape if you want but saying our drop backs were normal is just flat out wrong.

The last time we had talent in the secondary was when Trumaine was a junior and how well did our defense do that year? Oh...that's right...

Run defense perspective. It looks like 9 playoff teams has better run defense stats than UM. 5 were eliminated in the first round. In the round of 16, NDSU, Tenn St, Towson and Sam Houston St had better stats.

The question is not with whether people are "happy" with the run defense. The discussion is whether it bad, as you said, or not bad or good. In games, UM gave up 123, 55, 136, 115, 111, 83, 6, 112 rushing yards. The run defense was good in those games. In the other games, gave up 3.9, 5.1, 4.3 and 5.4 per carry. 2-2 in those 4 games. Averaged giving up 4.0 per carry for season.
