We had all of this talent last year but Gregorak couldnt figure out how to use it.... It just goes to show you how inept he really is..

Best of luck to both of these guys..

8-)

Because Tripp and Coyle had terrible seasons the last two years?

Take the coaches dick out of your mouth and think about it.... Gregorak aint D Coord material...

I mean yeah... the stats totally don't suggest that but you've probably got better qualifications to determine that, right?

The pass D has been bad the last two years but this defense has not been as terrible as people suggest. The stats point to that. I want it to be better but I think Ty is improving and his best years as a DC are in front of him.

I think your best years are behind you. Are you even capable of making a critical observation about Griz football? I mean, jeez, everything you post would have us think that our players and coaches should all be in the NFL already. We had two LBs who will probably play in the NFL, and one of the better D-lines in FCS football, yet teams always found a way to run on us. Pretty obvious that is was not the lack of talent. Duh, then it must be the coaching, right? Please tell us what you see from Gregorak that makes you think he is improving? I just wish we had Breske back.

Mike took chances and was really good at making changes throughout the game.. His defense flew around the field. I've said this 100 times but Gregorak is no different than what we had in Kraig Paulson as a coordinator.. I wish we could bring someone in from the outside who doesn't have any ties to grizzly athletics or the University. As of right now our beer is watered down..

Are you even capable of making a rational observation about Griz football? The Griz finished third in rushing defense in the conference last year. Teams didn't "always find a way to run on us".

Welcome back Growler1!

To punch a few holes in your argument, "We had two LBs who will probably play in the NFL and one of the better D-lines in FCS football, yet teams always found a way to run on us."

In the conference:

Scoring defense: 4th best (season) / 5th best (conference)
Total defense: 5th best (season) / 6th best (conference)
Rush defense: 4th best (season) / 3rd best (conference)

It's not the best but it's up there.

Improvements from Gregorak looking at 2012 to 2013:

Opponent scoring went from 26.7 per game to 22.9 per game.
Pass yards allowed went from 288.4 per game to 237.7 per game.
Interceptions went from 12 to 16
Forced fumbles went from 17 to 22 and fumble recoveries went from 10 to 16
Red zone scores the D allowed went from 89% to 71%
Red zone TDs the D allowed went from 59% to 54%

Other things receded, rush defense, 3rd down defense being the biggies.

I don't think Ty has done a great job yet but I see improvements and better things ahead. This spring I saw a much more aggressive defense that was attacking and blitzing from all angles - I saw a lot more of what we once had in Breske's scheme.

Like most all Griz fans I want improvement, by no means am I saying all is well with the defense.

I think another thing worth pointing out when we talk/compare to Breske's defense remember Breske was playing with a stellar secondary with a once in a generation talent in Trumaine Johnson, which shut down a good portion of the field in the passing game. One can only guess what his 2012 defense would've looked like without Tru, Roots, and McCord in the secondary but I bet he'd have struggles as well.

I firmly believe Gregorak's best defenses/years are ahead of him.

Facts have no room in this argument! This is egriz!

Gregorak is a very good coach, a very good linebacker coach, and a pretty good and improving DC. You truly don't have a clue.

3 teams ran for 150 or more yards on UM: CP (308 in 60 carries), SD (223) and CC (274 in 51 carries).

He's a great Linebacker coach, ill give you that...

In an attempt to try to rein this thread back to "So who lands on an NFL roster?"

I believe I have an outside chance but I'm not packing my bags yet. :ugeek:

So by looking at Brint's post, we were 5th in the conference in Total Defense and 4th in Scoring Defense? I don't get how that's anything to be excited about, especially given the talent we were packing on D last year. I'm not trying to crucify Gregorak by any means, but how is this acceptable given the standard of excellence we've come to expect around here?

Better back off pal, you are very close to being banned for having an original thought AND one that doesn't follow the party line.

Proceed with caution

It's not acceptable, it's garbage and I think this is a make or break year for Gregorak. I like the guy and his passion a lot, but I like winning more.

By "winning", you mean....? Because he was part of a coaching staff that won 10 games last year...

Winning a playoff game. We needed to win that game against Coastal. I wouldn't have been upset losing at NDSU, but at home, first round, to a Southern team in freezing conditions that had essentially 0 playoff experience was a must win. And they hung 42 on that D.

Finishing 3rd in the Pig Sty Conference is an accomplishment, with the best set of D-linemen and LBs in the conference?? Obvious that YOU are incapable of making a rational observation. Ask Coastal Carolina how tough it was to run on our defense.

You made the statement that teams "always find a way to run on us". That is patently false. Did SOME teams have success? Yes. The only team that stopped EVERYONE they played was NDSU. And who here has said we had the best set of D-linemen in the conference? Personally I think Cal Poly's was better as a group...EWU's was solid as a group...and SUU's was above average as a group.

That's actually a good point. As I've said, I'm not satisfied with the results so far either. Other posters saying Gregorak isn't DC material because the defense is "horrible" is inaccurate.
