last year's departed players for this year's newcomers?

strait, martin and rundles for...

selvig, taylor, johnson, mcgillis and banny?

let's break it down into three parts:

taylor for martin--close, but i think taylor will be bigger and better, even as a sophomore.

johnson for rundles. johnson still has to prove himself but based on rundles's performance last year, this is a no-brainer.

that leaves selvig, mcgillis and banny for strait. here you're giving up one of our all-time bests while getting in return athleticism, height and depth. i say, if mcgillis is as good as advertised and we get solid contributions from selvig and banny, this might be an even trade all by itself.

which means overall, you got the best of the trade. and just as a good trade is supposed to do, we're now a better team.

aren't we?

I was never a big fan of Martin. He wasn't a very good pt guard in my opinion. Not very quick and too short. He could shoot but most of the time he wasn't open enough to get a shot off. Didn't play very good D on the opposing guard. I think Taylor will be a big step up.

Rundles had the talent but didn't seem like he really cared. Kinda fell off after his freshman year.

And as you stated if McGillis is as good as he has been hyped we might forget about Strait. I don't expect much out of Selvig this year but if he adds some muscle and can still knock down the 3 not many people will be able to guard a 7 footer outside. Dirk Nowitski anybody?

Rundles and Martin werent great "team" guys either (imo). Chemistry on this yrs team will far exceed that of last years. This is a really good thing.

Maybe we should wait until after the exhibition games are over to decide on whether these trades are good. Lots of players can show up big in the exihibtion games that do not fare well against better teams in our division. Before we say who is the greatest of them all, maybe we should see if we can beat Colorado State by 36 again this year. ;)

I'll Bite:

Mythical

taylor for martin - Very similar in a lot of ways and very different in others. Martin is a little tougher and has a mean streak, maybe a little better perimeter shooter. Taylor is a I think is a is a smarter player. I would give Martin the little advantage here mainly due to the experiance factor.

johnson for rundles - This one is a no brainer. You have to take compare Johnson to the Rundles of last year. Rundles was a meer shell of himself last year, almost like beaten dog. He had no confidence and pretty much gave up on the Griz. Rundles might have a slight advantage as a ball handler over Johnson, but every where else Johnson has the advantage. Scoring, rebounding, defensively and more importantly .... toughness, big advantage Johnson

selvig, mcgillis and banny for strait - OK I will start by even throwing Selivg out of the Mix and just look at McGillis and Banny. These are completely different type of players you are switching out but what this "trade" does, though is take a glaring weakness on the Griz team last year and not only remedy this problem but makes it a strength of this years team. The Griz could not guard any team with a true small forward. They did not have a true SF on their roster, and had to go with a guard or a power forwrd at that spot and niether could defend the better small forwards. Both the guards and pf's were not athletic enough to defend, plus the smaller guard could not defend the SF in the post. Now you can, both McGillis and especially Banny are athletic strong defenders. Banny will not be a huge scorer, but Mcgillis can be. More importantly MCGillis has always been a incredibly efficient player. he is the type of guy that that you look at the box score at the end of the game and he always has more points than you think. He shoots a very high percentage and gets his job done with out fanfare. He may not shoot a higher percentage than Strait (because he will be shooting more 3-pointers) by the end of the season but I bet he is real close to Strait in points per shot. This trade solves so many problems for the Griz, and the Griz still have a dearth of quality big men that you would have to make this trade.

With these so called trades you loose some great players, but the Griz team becomes more balanced, more athletic, a better defenders, and very importantly a tougher team.

:o I am not trading Andrew Strait for anybody. :o

:( I am not trading the expectations that I had for the last 2 years. :(

 That said I would trade my expectations for this year and the results the last two years.

 (Not mentioned here) Assistant coaching trade may impact defensive intensity which may be a fair trade.

No offense to Strait, but I think he peaked as a sophomore. I realize he's a quiet guy and it's not in his nature to be a vocal leader, kind of a Tim Duncan kind of type, but that kind of laid back attitude can be mistaken for apathy when we're dealing with 18-22 year olds instead of 30 year old professional players. I think some fiery, intense, vocal leader types like Hasquet and McGillis will benefit the team leadership and energy this season.

I'm just excited for less excuses this year. Last year the defense was terrible, chemistry was lacking, and there seemed to be minimal leadership from the floor or bench. "We don't have a true PG", "We don't have a true 3", "We don't have a true center." I couldn't believe some of the excuses flowing on this forum last year. This year's roster seems to be a lot more balanced, and perhaps more talented. Being Tinkle's 3rd year, I think it's reasonable for fans to have some good expectations for the season.
